: In the spring of 2012, a nurse in Washington State detected a cluster of babies born with anencephaly-a fatal condition in which infants are born without parts of the brain or skull. The resulting investigation initially confirmed a rate of anencephaly between January 2010 and January 2013 of 8.4 per 10,000 live births-more than four times the national average. The authors identified 298 diagnoses of moyamoya in California and Washington from hospital discharge databases during the period 1987 to 1998. The incidence was 0.086/100,000 persons. The ethnicity-specific incidence rate ratios compared to whites were 4.6 (95% CI: 3.4 to 6.3) for Asian Americans, 2.2 (95% CI: 1.3 to 2.4) for African Americans, and 0.5 (95% CI: 0.3 to 0.8) for Hispanics. The incidence of moyamoya in Washington and California was lower than reported in Japan, but the rate among US Asians is similar.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize occupational injuries of aquaculture workers in Washington State.
METHODS: We reviewed accepted Washington State workers' compensation claims from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2014. Trends in employment, worker demographics (including age, sex, and body mass index), claim rate, and injury characteristics were summarized for accepted claims in the Washington State risk classes that include aquaculture workers.

On December 29, 1997, the Spokane Regional Health District received reports of acute gastroenteritis among members of a group attending a dinner banquet catered by a Spokane restaurant on December 18. OBJECTIVE: To describe our initial experience with balloon dilatation of the retroperitoneum.
METHODS: In 12 patients undergoing laparoscopic renal surgery, the retroperitoneum was dilated using the technique of balloon dilatation. This technique is described and the operative procedure performed in each patient is outlined. The postoperative recovery data and complications are also presented.
RESULTS: This procedure provided excellent exposure of the anatomic structures within the retroperitoneal space and simplified the surgical dissection by staying out of the abdominal cavity.

A survey of Washington state pediatricians and allied health professionals showed that two thirds provide written information to parents on diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis; measles-mumps-rubella; and oral polio vaccines. Twenty-two percent of pediatricians provide written information on inactivated polio vaccine. Sixty-two percent of pediatricians who give immunizations require a parent's signature as evidence of having provided information or obtained consent.

A patient in Washington State harbored a fish tapeworm most likely acquired from eating raw salmon. Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense was identified by cox1 sequence analysis. Although this is the first documented human D. nihonkaiense infection in the United States, the parasite may have been present earlier but misidentified as Diphyllobothrium latum.

In February 2004, we initiated an epidemiological investigation within a US state to enhance autopsy surveillance for clinically suspected prion disease. During the first 30 months, 30 cases of suspected prion disease were referred from throughout Washington. Of these, 18 cases had prion disease, and all of these were classified as either familial or sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD); there was no case of variant CJD. Occupational burns cause significant morbidity in the United States each year; however, there are few studies that report industries or workplaces where workers are at an increased risk of burn injuries. Washington State's Department of Labor and Industries (L and I) computerized workers' compensation database was used to describe work-related burns over 5 years. For the period 1976-1985, the authors attempted to identify all cases of blastomycosis in Louisiana and studied in detail one county (Washington Parish) suspected by local physicians of having an unusually high incidence of the disease.
