Intracellular presence and genetic relationship of Helicobacter pylori within neonates' fecal yeasts and their mothers' vaginal yeasts.

Helicobacter pylori are transmissible from person to person and among family members. Mother-to-child transmission is the main intrafamilial route of H. pylori transmission. However, how it transmits from mother to child is still being determined. Vaginal yeast often transmits to neonates during delivery. Therefore, H. pylori hosted in yeast might follow the same transmission route. This study aimed to detect intracellular H. pylori in vaginal and fecal yeasts isolates and explore the role of yeast in H. pylori transmission. Yeast was isolated from the mothers' vaginal discharge and neonates' …

Evaluation of Biocontrol Efficacy by Competing Yeasts.

Botrytis cinerea causes gray mold across a wide range of crops and postharvest contexts. While integrated agronomic practices help, chemical fungicides are still often required, raising concerns about resistance development and environmental impact. Biological control agents (BCAs), particularly non-Saccharomyces yeasts, offer advantages such as simple nutritional needs, surface colonization potential, and lower risk of mycotoxin production. A robust, rapid, and cost-effective in vitro screening workflow is essential to identify promising BCAs that inhibit B. cinerea through fungistatic diffus…

Extracellular vesicles produced by Malassezia commensal yeasts.

Malassezia species were long regarded as microorganisms implicated exclusively in dermatological pathology. However, recent studies have further postulated a potential association between these fungi and systemic and non-cutaneous diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, pancreatic cancer or neurodegenerative diseases, though evidence is still preliminary. Concurrently, there is growing scientific interest in extracellular vesicles as conserved cross-kingdom mediators of intercellular communication, with the capacity to modulate host cellular responses. While extracellu

Climate-driven adaptive microevolution in wild yeasts.

Environmental variation imposes strong selection on microbial populations, yet linking ecological gradients to genomic and phenotypic diversification remains challenging due to limited sampling of wild microbes. Here, we leveraged the exceptional abundance of the cold-adapted yeast Saccharomyces eubayanus throughout Patagonian Nothofagus forests to investigate how climatic gradients shape natural microbial diversity. Using systematic sampling across ~1,000 km of Chilean Patagonia, spanning multiple seasons, altitudes, and thermal regimes, we integrated environmental, genomic, and phenotypic an

Diversity of spore morphology among fission yeasts.

Fungi produce spores as a strategy for survival and dispersal. Spore shape and surface structure are thought to facilitate adhesion to hosts or vectors, and the outermost spore layer is associated with spore hydrophobicity and stress tolerance. Although the morphology of Schizosaccharomyces pombe spores has been well characterized-including a distinctive bumpy surface and an outermost proteinaceous layer-spore morphology in other fission yeasts remains poorly understood. Here we compared the structure of spores from four fission yeast species-S. pombe, S. octosporus, S. japonicus, and S. versa…

Adhesins of Yeasts: Protein Structure and Interactions.

The ability of yeast cells to adhere to other cells or substrates is crucial for many yeasts. The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae can switch from a unicellular lifestyle to a multicellular one. A crucial step in multicellular lifestyle adaptation is self-recognition, self-interaction, and adhesion to abiotic surfaces. Infectious yeast diseases such as candidiasis are initiated by the adhesion of the yeast cells to host cells. Adhesion is accomplished by adhesin proteins that are attached to the cell wall and stick out to interact with other cells or substrates. Protein structures give d…

[Malassezia yeasts and their significance in dermatology].

Yeasts of the genus Malassezia belong to the normal microflora of the human skin. In addition they are known to cause a variety of skin diseases; the most frequent of which is pityriasis versicolor. Malassezia yeasts are also thought to be associated with seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and Malassezia folliculitis. Recently the significance of Malassezia yeasts as a trigger factor for atopic dermatitis of the head and neck region has been pointed out. The role of the Malassezia yeasts in these different diseases has been controversial in the past and remains an issue because of difficulties in…

The Pityrosporon yeasts. Their role as pathogens.

P. orbiculare (P. ovale), a member of the normal human cutaneous flora, is also an opportunistic pathogen, and the association with tinea versicolor is well-documented. Recently, the Pityrosporon yeasts have been associated with several other diseases. That Pityrosporon folliculitis is a separate disease is now documented. The association with CRP and with some cases of psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis seem probable but are not yet fully proven. Reports show that P. orbiculare (P. ovale) are involved not only in dermatologic diseases, again indicating that the organisms are not "harmless" s…

Organic growth factor requirements of some yeasts.

Some sporogenous yeasts (Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Debaryomyces hansenii, Hansenula ciferrii, Hansenula polymorpha, Pichia polymorpha, Saccharomycopsis guttulata, and Saccharomyces chevalieri), isolated from various fruits have been examined for their organic growth factor requisites. H. ciferrii was completely deficient in thiamine, biotin, inositol, riboflavin, niacin, and partially deficient in pantothenic acid. It required an external supply of 0.1-1.0 ppm thiamine, 0.01-0.1 ppm biotin, 10.0 ppm inositol, 0.10 ppm niacin and riboflavin for its optimum growth. H. polymorpha showed partial…

[Cyanide insensitive respiration of Candida lipolytica yeasts].

The effect of rotenone, antimycin A, oligomycin, 2,4,-DNP, and various subtrates on the appearance of cyanide-resistant respiration of Candida lipolytica yeast was studied. Rotenone inhibited the development of cyanide-resistant respiration, but did not prevent its origination. Antimycin A and oligomycin increased the rate of the appearance of cyanide-resistant respiration. If the resting yeast culture was incubated with 2,4-DNP, glucose, or glycerol, the development of the alternative pathway of electron transport was inhibited. Such substrates as alpha-glycerophosphate, citrate, and D,L-lact

Chalk Yeasts Cause Gluten-Free Bread Spoilage.

Four different yeast strains were isolated from industrial gluten-free bread (GFB) purchased from a local supermarket. These strains, including Hyphopichia burtonii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Saccharomycopsis fibuligera, and Cyberlindnera fabianii, are responsible for spoilage, which consists of white powdery and filamentous colonies due to the fragmentation of hyphae into short-length fragments (dust-type spots) that is typical of the spoilage produced by chalk yeasts. The isolated strains were identified using genomic analysis. Among them, C. fabianii was also isolated, which is a rare ascom…

[The significance of yeasts in seborrheic eczema].

The high prevalence of seborrheic dermatitis in HIV-infected subjects has led to intensified the discussion of the etiopathogenesis of this dermatological disease. There is increasing controversy about the significance of Pityrosporum in seborrheic dermatitis. On the other hand, recent clinical and experimental data favor the role of intestinal candidiasis in seborrheic dermatitis: a high quantity of Candida in the feces of the affected patients, elevated phospholipase activity of the Candida sp. with special pathogenic relevance for mucosal adhesion and fast and long-lasting regression of seb

Activity of phenothiazines against medically important yeasts.

Two phenothiazine compounds, trifluoperazine and chlorpromazine, inhibited growth in vitro of the five most common pathogenic yeasts, with MICs ranging from 10 to 40 micrograms/ml. Daily intraperitoneal injections of trifluoperazine (4 to 7 mg/kg of body weight) increased the survival of mice experimentally infected with Candida albicans or Cryptococcus neoformans. The potential use of these drugs against fungal meningitis is discussed.

Molecular Triggers of Yeast Pathogenicity in the Yeast-Host Interactions.

Candida and other pathogenic yeast species, able to transition from non-invasive commensal organisms to invasive pathogens, are characterized by a high ability to adapt to stress conditions encountered in the human host, such as pH and temperature shifts, CO2 and oxygen level variations, and nutritional limitations. Although Candida albicans remains the main cause of Candida-related infections, non-albicans Candida (NAC) species, including C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, and non-Candida species such as Yarrowia lipolytica, Candidozyma auris, and Nakaseomyces glabratus, are gaining c

Next-generation brewing yeasts for non-alcoholic beers.

Non‑alcoholic beers (NABs) are a rapidly expanding market. However, producing high‑quality products remains challenging because ethanol strongly shapes beer flavor and mouthfeel. Biological production methods, which restrict alcohol formation during fermentation, offer advantages over physical methods, which remove alcohol after fermentation. However, they are limited by the performance and diversity of available yeasts. Recent advances in bioprospecting, breeding, hybridization, adaptive evolution, and genetic engineering reveal how different yeast lineages and trait-development strategies ca…
