Mercury concentrations in Antarctic zooplankton with a focus on the krill species, Euphausia superba.

The Antarctic is the most isolated region in the world; nevertheless, it has not avoided the negative impact of human activity, including the inflow of toxic mercury (Hg). Hg deposited in the Antarctic marine environment can be bioavailable and accumulate in the food web, reaching elevated concentrations in high-trophic-level biota, especially if methylated. Zooplankton, together with phytoplankton, are critical for the transport of pollutants, including Hg to higher trophic levels. For the Southern Ocean ecosystem, one of the key zooplankton components is the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba…

Zooplankton community structure as determinant of toxic substances content along the European coast.

Zooplankton are the key components of marine food webs, mediating the transfer of energy and substances between phytoplankton and higher trophic levels. Due to their short life cycles, high surface-to-volume ratios, and position in the food chain, zooplankton may also be highly efficient vectors of toxic compounds, including mercury (Hg) and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as bisphenol A (BPA), 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), and 4-tert-octylphenol (4-tOP). This study investigated the influence of zooplankton community composition on the accumulation of these toxic substances along the Europ…

Prognostication of zooplankton-driven cholera pathoepidemiological Dynamics: Novel Bayesian-regularized deep NARX neuroarchitecture.

BACKGROUND: Cholera outbreaks pose significant health concerns, particularly through freshwater contamination through zooplankton serving as reservoirs for Vibrio Cholerae. Understanding these complex interactions within the aquatic ecosystem through mathematical modeling regimes may help us predict and prevent the spread of Cholera disease spread in affected regions. METHOD: In this study, an innovative Bayesian regularized deep nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (BRDNARX) neural networks are employed to model the intricate dynamics of Zooplankton-Driven Cholera Disease Transmission (ZDCDT) …

Terrestrial organic matter increases zooplankton methylmercury accumulation in a brown-water boreal lake.

Increases in terrestrial organic matter (tOM) transport from catchments to boreal lakes can affect methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in aquatic biota both directly by increasing concentrations of aqueous MeHg, and indirectly through effects on MeHg bioavailability and on energy pathways in the lower food web. We carried out a detailed seasonal study of water chemistry, zooplankton diet, and MeHg accumulation in zooplankton in two lakes with contrasting tOM concentrations. Between-lake differences explained 51% of the variability in our water chemistry data, with no observed effect of season or…

Prey Capture, Ingestion, and Digestion Dynamics of Octopus vulgaris Paralarvae Fed Live Zooplankton.

Octopus vulgaris is a species of great interest in research areas such as neurobiology, ethology, and ecology but also a candidate species for aquaculture as a food resource and for alleviating the fishing pressure on its wild populations. This study aimed to characterize the predatory behavior of O. vulgaris paralarvae and to quantify their digestive activity. Those processes were affordable using the video-recording analysis of 3 days post-hatching (dph), mantle-transparent paralarvae feeding on 18 types of live zooplanktonic prey. We show for the first time in a live cephalopod that octopus…

Ecological stability of zooplankton communities in changing arctic lakes over three decades.

In the Arctic, rapid warming is altering disturbance regimes, creating an urgent need to assess the ecological stability of these relatively pristine ecosystems. The Arctic landscape has thousands of lakes that are experiencing both gradual, persistent disturbances (e.g., warming) and increased frequency and intensity of pulse disturbances (e.g., land-surface failures). To assess the ecological stability of lake communities in a changing environment, we analyzed long-term data (14-39 years) on zooplankton communities and environmental variables from 25 lakes in arctic Alaska. We characterized …

Strong winds as driver of surf zooplankton abundance and composition in a temperate sandy beach.

This study explores the effect of different wind events (direction and duration) on the surf zone zooplankton community in a temperate sandy beach. Samplings were realized on the surf zone of Pehuen Co sandy beach during 17 wind events from May 17th, 2017, to July 19th, 2019. Biological samples were taken before and after the events. The identification of the events was realized using recorded high-frequency wind speed data. General Linear Model (LM) and Generalized linear models (GLM) were employed to compare physical and biological variables. We observed that the wind direction unequally alt…

Combined toxicity and toxicity persistence of antidepressants citalopram and mirtazapine to zooplankton Daphnia magna.

Citalopram (CTP) and mirtazapine (MTP) are two typical psychoactive drugs used for the depression treatment. As emerging pollutants, CTP and MTP have raised concern because of their harmful effect on aquatic organisms. Therefore, the ecotoxicological risk of these two pollutants to aquatic organisms should be given more attention. In this study, the effects of CTP and MTP on the feeding rate, heartbeat, nutritional enzymes, and their related gene expression of D. magna were investigated under single and binary mixture pollutant exposure. Subsequently, the recovery of exposed D. magna was studi

Ingestion and contact with polyethylene microplastics does not cause acute toxicity on marine zooplankton.

Toxicity of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) of size ranges similar to their natural food to zooplanktonic organisms representative of the main taxa present in marine plankton, including rotifers, copepods, bivalves, echinoderms and fish, was evaluated. Early life stages (ELS) were prioritized as testing models in order to maximize sensitivity. Treatments included particles spiked with benzophenone-3 (BP-3), a hydrophobic organic chemical used in cosmetics with direct input in coastal areas. Despite documented ingestion of both virgin and BP-3 spiked microplastics no acute toxicity was found…

Zooplankton may serve as transmission vectors for viruses infecting algal blooms in the ocean.

Marine viruses are recognized as a major driving force regulating phytoplankton community composition and nutrient cycling in the oceans. Yet, little is known about mechanisms that influence viral dispersal in aquatic systems, other than physical processes, and that lead to the rapid demise of large-scale algal blooms in the oceans. Here, we show that copepods, abundant migrating crustaceans that graze on phytoplankton, as well as other zooplankton can accumulate and mediate the transmission of viruses infecting Emiliania huxleyi, a bloom-forming coccolithophore that plays an important role in…

In Vivo Bioimaging of Mercury Sulfide Nanoparticles Dissolution in the Gut Environment of Zooplankton.

The toxicity of mercury sulfide nanoparticles (HgS-NPs) is likely mediated by their in vivo dissolution into bioavailable Hg2+. However, tracking this transformation within complex biological systems has been a major analytical challenge, hindering a mechanistic understanding of the HgS-NPs' toxicology. To address this, we developed an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based bioimaging technique for the selective and real-time monitoring of Hg2+ in Daphnia magna, enabling the direct visualization and quantification of HgS-NP dissolution in a multicellular organism. Our Hg2+-specific AIE probe

Simulation of encounter rates between zooplankton organisms and microplastics in a tropical estuary.

Coastal estuarine systems may hold a large number of microplastic particles, which predators often mistake for prey. This study estimated the encounter rates between microplastics (alleged prey) and zooplankton having different feeding modes, trophic positions, swimming velocities, and perception distances, under calm and turbulent conditions, and during two seasons. Surface water samples were taken at 10/12 sites of the Sontecomapan lagoon, southern Gulf of Mexico, to quantify microplastic concentration. Zooplankton organisms considered were copepods, chaetognaths, and luciferids, common orga…

Interactions between benthic predators and zooplanktonic prey are affected by turbulent waves.

Predators capture prey in complex and variable environments. In the ocean, bottom-dwelling (benthic) organisms are subjected to water currents, waves, and turbulent eddies. For benthic predators that feed on small animals carried in the water (zooplankton), flow not only delivers prey, but can also shape predator-prey interactions. Benthic passive suspension feeders collect prey delivered by movement of ambient water onto capture-surfaces, whereas motile benthic predators, such as burrow-dwelling fish, dart out to catch passing zooplankton. How does the flow of ambient water affect these contr…

Ecotoxicity of Polyvinylidene Difluoride (PVDF) and Polylactic Acid (PLA) Microplastics in Marine Zooplankton.

The aim of this study was to investigate the ecotoxicity of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics (MPs) in two marine zooplankton: the crustacean Artemia franciscana and the cnidarian Aurelia sp. (common jellyfish). To achieve this goal, (i) MP uptake, (ii) immobility, and (iii) behavior (swimming speed, pulsation mode) of crustacean larval stages and jellyfish ephyrae exposed to MPs concentrations (1, 10, 100 mg/L) were assessed for 24 h. Using traditional and novel techniques, i.e., epifluorescence microscopy and 3D holotomography (HT), PVDF and PLA MPs wer…

Zooplankton sensitivity and phytoplankton regrowth for ballast water treatment with advanced oxidation processes.

The ballasting and de-ballasting of ships are two necessary operations with ballast water that provide stability for safe navigation. Empty ships must ballast tanks with water, which contains living organisms and subsequently carries them away from their original distribution. De-ballasting represents an input of still viable zooplankton, phytoplankton, and microorganisms in the destination port, leading to the introduction of alien species, and consequently, the introduction of organisms will alter the local biodiversity. Ballast water treatment is necessary to comply with the International M…

Mass flux calculations show strong allochthonous support of freshwater zooplankton production is unlikely.

Many studies have concluded terrestrial carbon inputs contribute 20-70% of the carbon supporting zooplankton and fish production in lakes. Conversely, it is also known that terrestrial carbon inputs are of very low nutritional quality and phytoplankton are strongly preferentially utilized by zooplankton. Because of its low quality, substantial terrestrial support of zooplankton production in lakes is only conceivable when terrigenous organic matter inputs are much larger than algal production. We conducted a quantitative analysis of terrestrial carbon mass influx and algal primary production e…

Decoupling bioaccumulation and trophic transfer: nanoatrazine accumulates in microalgae but shows limited transfer to zooplankton.

Nanoformulations of pesticides have been proposed as a strategy to improve agricultural efficiency while potentially reducing environmental contamination. However, little is known about the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of nanopesticides in aquatic food webs. In this study, the bioaccumulation of poly(ε-caprolactone)-encapsulated nanoatrazine (nATZ-PCL) was evaluated in the microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata, as well as its potential transfer to the zooplanktonic consumer Daphnia magna through dietary and direct exposure pathways. Physicochemical characterization demonstrated that the n…

Impacts of zooplankton composition and algal enrichment on the accumulation of mercury in an experimental freshwater food web.

There is a well documented accumulation of mercury in fish to concentrations of concern for human consumption. Variation in fish Hg burden between lakes is often high and may result from differences in Hg transfer through lower levels of the food web where mercury is bioconcentrated to phytoplankton and transferred to herbivorous zooplankton. Prior research derived patterns of mercury accumulation in freshwater invertebrates from field collected animals. This study provides results from controlled mesocosm experiments comparing the effects of zooplankton composition, algal abundance, and the c…
