Association of the ABO blood group with SARS-CoV-2 infection in a community with low infection rate.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reports on the association of the ABO phenotypes with infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus have mostly come from countries with high infection rates. This study examined the possible association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the ABO phenotype in Black Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This report is from a single centre where both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients were quarantined. At the time of this report, Oyo State, Nigeria had carried out 15 733 tests of which 3119 were positive for the virus with 1952 recoveries and 37 deaths. The ABO distribution of patients

Implementation of a whole blood programme within a blood service: Practical guidance for blood providers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early balanced transfusion is recommended for resuscitation of patients with severe bleeding. Whole blood (WB) is reintroduced as a feasible alternative to blood components, as it includes red blood cells, plasma and platelets in a physiological ratio. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this review, we aim to provide practical guidance and a framework for blood providers aiming to implement a WB programme. The review summarizes recommendations and practical implications identified from published literature, regulatory requirements and current programmes. RESULTS: WB donors

Association of genetic markers with some eye diseases.

In this study ocular conditions like cataract, corneal dystrophy, retinal detachment, primary glaucoma, myopia and strabismus have been examined for certain genetic markers to estimate the relative risks involved. The incidence of nontasters for PTC was significantly high in cases with congenital cataract, aphakic retinal detachment and convergent and divergent squint as compared to controls. Among nontasters, the frequency of total taste blindness was strikingly high in the disease group as compared to controls. Blood group A individuals showed significantly high risk for zonular cataract, co

Severe ABO Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn Requiring Exchange Transfusion.

ABO incompatibility (ABOi), the most common cause of hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), is nearly always mild and treatable with phototherapy. Reports of ABOi HDN requiring neonatal exchange transfusion are extremely rare since the inception of modern guidelines. Here, a case of ABOi HDN clearly met criteria for exchange transfusion. An O-positive African American mother delivered a B-positive neonate that quickly developed hyperbilirubinemia. The neonatal DAT was positive from anti-B and anti-A,B, and maternal IgG titer was 1024. Double volume exchange transfusion resulted in a favorable

Risks of hemolysis due to anti-A and anti-B caused by the transfusion of blood or blood components containing ABO-incompatible plasma.

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of fresh blood group O whole blood in acute trauma medicine makes it important to reevaluate the issue of hemolytic reactions related to the transfusion of ABO-incompatible plasma. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This review summarizes and evaluates published articles and case reports concerning hemolytic reactions in connection with the transfusion of group O whole blood or blood products to nongroup O recipients. RESULTS: In 1945-1986, 15 nonmilitary publications reported hemolytic transfusion reactions with group O blood/blood products. All patients recovered exce

The serological investigation of red cell incompatible transfusion reactions.

The hospital blood bank plays a key role in the diagnosis of acute transfusion reactions involving red cell incompatibility. This paper discusses the interpretation of the serological tests performed by the laboratory. Because red cell incompatible transfusion reactions occur so infrequently it is difficult to accumulate practical experience in their laboratory presentation and this paper describes several of the pitfalls that may be encountered when laboratory findings deviate from classical descriptions. These include the absence of a positive direct antiglobulin test (Coombs) or an incompat

Blood groups and filariasis.

Only a little is known about the studies done with filariasis in relation to blood groups. The present communication reports the results of a preliminary study carried out to investigate any relationship of ABO and Rho(D) blood groups in persons with circulating microfilariae (mf) in blood and with disease manifestations compared with healthy normal controls within a population in similar epidemiological and ecological conditions. Blood groups ABO and Rho(D) were investigated among 271 persons with filarial disease and 172 normal subjects from an endemic area of bancroftian filariasis. No rela

The self-nonself concept as a basis for immune complex to replace "autoimmune diseases".

The remarkable history of the 1951 pp 66 year old woman with gastric adenocarcinoma is reviewed. After subtotal gastrectomy she survived for 22 years without any metastases. Presumably the artificially induced high titer IgG, anti-P1 proved to be cytotoxic in two stages: (1) binding of anti-P1 to the terminal fifth sugar, galactose, and (2) the action of cellular immunity in the form of killer T derived lymphocytes containing receptors for IgG molecules. An identical mechanism may be operative in inducing abortions in the pp pregnant woman with a P1 fetus. P1 illegitimate glycolipid (GL) red c

Perinatal clinical management of a rare ABh variant blood group.

BACKGROUND: The H antigen, precursor of the A and B blood groups, is a high-prevalence antigen. Very few H antigen-negative (H-) blood donors are available in the United Kingdom. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a second pregnancy in a 28-year-old woman with the very rare ABh phenotype, and the presence of anti-H, anti-A and anti-B. Only H- (Oh) and ABh phenotype red cells were compatible. Given the rarity of individuals with these phenotypes, there were insufficient compatible red cell units for management of a major antepartum or postpartum haemorrhage. For this high-risk pregnancy

[Serological Characteristics of Subtype A Caused by New A Allele Mutation and a Family Survey].

OBJECTIVE: In this study, the results of forward and reverse blood typing of a male patient diagnosed as bronchiectasis were inconsistent, which were type O and type A respectively. Multiple experiments including genotyping and sequencing and family investigation were carried out to determine the subtype of ABO blood group and explore the serological characteristics of this subtype. METHODS: Standard serological techniques were used to conduct forward and reverse typing, reverse blood typing enhancement test, H antigen identification, absorption-elution test, salivary blood group substances t

Short report: severe malaria associated with blood group.

The ABO blood groups are not linked to the incidence of simple malaria infection but have been associated with rosette formation. In an effort to see if clinically severe malaria is associated with blood group, 489 patients were studied in Zimbabwe. Patients with malaria and group A blood had lower hemoglobin levels and more risk of coma than did infected patients with other blood groups. In this population, severe malaria is associated with blood group.
