Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an important component in the treatment of depression and schizophrenia in Germany. For this intervention patients undergo short-term general anesthesia and muscle relaxation. Before anesthesia can be carried out patients are subject to a comprehensive examination. For general anesthesia all established hypnotics can be used, but differences with respect to the success of the ECT have been described. Spontaneous non-traumatic Escherichia coli meningitis is very rare in adults. We report a case of a 48-year-old woman with Marfan's syndrome with E coli meningitis. Apparently, the relation between an increased risk of meningitis and Marfan's syndrome is not well known. This patient was discharged on intravenous antibiotic therapy after a diagnosis of E coli meningitis without looking for the cause by imaging studies previously. This report describes two patients who developed severe neutropenia one month after starting sulphasalazine (SASP) as treatment for their inflammatory joint disease. Both recovered on stopping the drug. Six further cases (out of a series of 180 patients with inflammatory forms of arthritis receiving SASP therapy) in whom transient leucopenia occurred are also recorded. These patients were able to continue the drug under close supervision. Thirty hypertensive patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage were divided randomly into two groups. The treated group was begun on preliminary volume expansion, and control of hypertension was carried out using vasodilators and centrally acting drugs. The control group was treated in the classical manner for hypertension, with a diuretic as the foundation for therapy. The incidence of clinical vasospasm was compared to that of angiographic spasm. To study the prevalence, structure and risk factors of emotional burn-out in narcologists, 90 practitioners in the field of narcology were studied. Emotional burn-out syndrome was found in 37.7% of narcologists. The stage of "resistance" characterized by the lowered interest in professional duties, sparing of emotions and feeling of being tired from interpersonal contacts was observed most frequently. Usutu virus (USUV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus originating from Africa, that belongs to the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) complex. Out of 50 consecutive untreated patients with diffuse toxic goitre 15 showed long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS), 30 showed LATS protector only, and five showed neither. LATS protector was present in all the patients with LATS.
