Group Psychological Abuse and Psychopathological Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Psychological Stress.

In the context of the long-term effects of psychological abuse, this study examined psychological stress and psychopathological symptoms in survivors of groups with cultic dynamics where abusive behaviors take place on an ongoing basis. We specifically tested the mediating role of psychological stress suffered after the departure from the group between the group psychological abuse experienced and current psychopathology. An online questionnaire was administered to 608 Spanish-speaking former members of different groups. We distributed participants into a sample of victims (N = 365) and a samp

SOURCES OF STRESS AND RECOVERY AS CONCURRENT PREDICTORS OF THE AFFECT BALANCE OF PATIENTS WITH FIBROMYALGIA.

This study examined sources of stress and recovery in a group of 107 patients with fibromyalgia (M age = 50.4 yr., SD = 11.8), in comparison to a control group of 68 healthy participants (M age = 47.8 yr., SD = 8.1) of equivalent age and marital status. Between-group differences in sources of stress and recovery were examined by means of an independent samples t test. In addition, between-groups differences in the relationship between sources of stress and recovery and affect balance were explored through a multi-group SEM analysis. The results provided evidence in support of the hypothesis th

Entry to the burns team: stressors, supports and coping strategies.

Employment as a member of a multidisciplinary burns team presents the individual with an enticing professional and personal challenge. Patients sustaining major burns require intense physical and psychological rehabilitation over an extended period of time, often drawing upon the services of a sole therapist. Although more attention is being paid to professional issues of 'burn-out' and general care of the health professional, there has been little published with regard to actual stressors experienced by burn staff. An understanding of stressors faced, and current support systems utilized, by

Psychoendocrine aspects of coping with distress.

The psychoendocrine aspects of coping with distress were studied under mental and physical laboratory strain as well as in response to naturalistic stress. In spite of the common underlying endocrine responses to distress, gender differences in psychological response appeared to modify endocrine responses to the experience of pain. If the aspiration level task in the laboratory was well controlled by the subject hypothalamo-pituitary stress hormones were no longer secreted. Furthermore, heavy, physical work elevated blood levels of stress hormones (dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline, prolacti

Addressing the psychological needs of families of food-allergic children.

The increase in food allergies among US children has led to greater awareness of the psychological impact on their families. A variety of negative effects can result from both the daily strain of food-allergy management and the constant vigilance and fear that this condition engenders. Most of these effects are normal and expected responses to having a child with a demanding condition filled with uncertainties. However, a small but substantial proportion of families living with childhood food allergy experience significant psychological distress and/or maladaptive coping responses that interfe

[Gestational Trophoblastic Disease: psychological impact and the role of defence mechanisms during illness and follow-up].

UNLABELLED: Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) is a group of disorders that derive from the placenta and arise after a rare gestational event. They can be divided into pre-malignant forms (partial and complete hydatidiform mole) and malignant forms called Gestational Trophoblastic Neoplasia (GTN). Despite a favourable prognosis, the nature of this group of disorders can be a source of stress for patients who are affected by this disease. METHODS: Thirty-one patients diagnosed with GTD completed a battery of self-administered questionnaires aimed at analysing the psychological adaptation

Homosexual and bisexual identity in sex-reassigned female-to-male transsexuals.

Descriptions of female-to-male transsexuals who are sexually attracted to men are rare. This is a report on nine of them. Their awareness of gender dysphoria preceded their awareness of their attraction to men. Their wish to undergo sex reassignment as a means of resolving their gender dysphoria superseded any concerns about their sexual orientation or sexual adaptation after surgery. Several had had sexual relationships with men before sex reassignment which were unsatisfactory because these men viewed our subjects as women. After sex reassignment, the subjects successfully established sexual

Understanding the role of basic psychological needs and agency in the mental well-being of rheumatoid arthritis patients: An exploratory research.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease, accompanied by disability and chronic pain, therefore psychological problems and impaired health-related quality of life are common among patients. Maintaining mental health and well-being strongly depends on retaining previous meaningful, autonomous activities and accepting reliance on others. The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provides considerable evidence that the fulfilled needs of competence, relatedness, and autonomy universally foster psychological well-being. This paper identifies the themes of basic psychological needs and t

Stress-coping strategies and interpersonal characteristics in ineffective maternal adaptation after childbirth: a pilot case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal adaptation after childbirth represents a complex psychological process that significantly influences maternal well-being, mother-infant interaction, and long-term child development. While postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder have been extensively studied, less attention has been given to early stress-coping patterns and interpersonal characteristics associated with adjustment difficulties. METHODS: This pilot case-control study included 104 women within the first postpartum year. Fifty seven women diagnosed with adjustment disorder (ICD-10: F43.2) form

Anticipatory grief among caregivers of people living with dementia: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: As Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) progress, family caregivers may experience grief before the death of the person living with ADRD. This type of grief is commonly referred to as anticipatory grief, which can contribute to increased psychological distress (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) and potentially affect caregivers' long-term mental health. This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on risk and resilience factors associated with anticipatory grief, its relationship with caregiver mental health, and psychosocial interventions targeting anticipator

Integrating behaviour, physiology, and immune response to social stress in fish.

Dominance hierarchies in fish are established through conflicts and lead to significant differences in stress physiology, behaviour, and immune function between dominant and subordinate individuals. This review explores the relationship between social stress within these hierarchies, individual variations in stress responses and cognitive bias towards stressful situations, and the impact of conflicts on future performance and interactions between stress and the immune system. Fish express divergent stress coping styles (proactive and reactive) that differ in the reactivity of the stress axes e

Stress Factors, Stress Levels, and Coping Mechanisms among University Students.

AIMS: To explore university students' levels of stress, stressors, and their coping style. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational design with a convenience sample (n = 676) of university students who completed the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Coping Strategies Indicator (CSI) was used. Findings. Overall, two-thirds of the participant reported moderate levels of stress. Students with chronic illness, living alone, low CGPA, and having exams today experienced a statistically higher mean level of stress. Students who are living alone used the "avoidance" method more significantly an

Initial evidence regarding the neurobiological basis of psychological symptoms in dementia caregivers.

Mood symptoms and disorders are common in dementia caregivers, who can be exposed to a myriad of potential stressors including their care recipient's neuropsychiatric symptoms. Existing evidence indicates that the effects of potentially stressful exposures on mental health depend on the caregiver's individual characteristics and responses. Specifically, prior studies indicate that risk factors measured on psychological (e.g., emotion-focused/behaviorally disengaged coping responses) and behavioral (e.g., sleep and activity restriction) levels of analysis may confer the effects of caregiving ex
