Adversity and adolescent brain development: differential associations with grey and white matter across two longitudinal cohorts.

Globally, 60% of the population has experienced at least one type of adversity (e.g., emotional abuse, bullying) across infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Such experiences have been linked to an increased risk for mental health disorders. Changes in brain structure following experiences of childhood adversity have been hypothesised to be a mechanistic pathway explaining later mental health issues. However, to understand how changes in brain structure might mediate the effects of adversity, it is essential to identify which underlying neuronal processes may be affected by different types of a

IL6ST participates in the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis by regulating bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a complex three-dimensional spinal deformity that primarily affects adolescents, and its pathogenesis remains elusive. Several studies have indicated that AIS may be associated with low bone mineral density, and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are known to play a crucial role in bone metabolism. Through high-throughput sequencing of the BMSC transcriptome, we identified 1919 differentially expressed genes and pinpointed IL6ST as a key gene influencing osteogenic differentiation in AIS. Mechanistic experiments revealed that IL6ST regulates the

Development and reliability testing of a symptom assessment scale for postoperative patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) often experience pain, fatigue, decreased appetite, anxiety and depression, etc. Previous studies have focused on investigating a single symptom in patients with AIS, ignoring possible synergistic effects between symptoms, or using self-administered questionnaires that have not been scientifically evaluated. AIMS: To develop a symptom assessment scale for postoperative patients with AIS and test its reliability and validity. METHODS: Using the symptom experience model as the theoretical framework, we constructed a bank of scale

Adolescent to young adult longitudinal development of subcortical volumes in two European sites with four waves.

Adolescent subcortical structural brain development might underlie psychopathological symptoms, which often emerge in adolescence. At the same time, sex differences exist in psychopathology, which might be mirrored in underlying sex differences in structural development. However, previous studies showed inconsistencies in subcortical trajectories and potential sex differences. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the subcortical structural trajectories and their sex differences across adolescence using for the first time a single cohort design, the same quality control procedure, software, and a

Bedtime screen use behaviors and sleep outcomes: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

OBJECTIVES: To determine associations between bedtime screen time behaviors and sleep outcomes in a national study of early adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 10,280 early adolescents aged 10-14 (48.8% female) in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (Year 2, 2018-2020). Regression analyses examined the association between self-reported bedtime screen use and self- and caregiver-reported sleep measures, including sleep disturbance symptoms, controlling for sex, race/ethnicity, household income, parent education, depression, data collection period (pre- vs.

Secondary Degeneration Impairs Myelin Ultrastructural Development in Adulthood following Adolescent Neurotrauma in the Rat Optic Nerve.

Adolescence is a critical period of postnatal development characterized by social, emotional, and cognitive changes. These changes are increasingly understood to depend on white matter development. White matter is highly vulnerable to the effects of injury, including secondary degeneration in regions adjacent to the primary injury site which alters the myelin ultrastructure. However, the impact of such alterations on adolescent white matter maturation is yet to be investigated. To address this, female piebald-virol-glaxo rats underwent partial transection of the optic nerve during early adoles

Art-based reflections from 12 years of adolescent health and development-related research in South Africa.

This paper presents empirical and methodological findings from an art-based, participatory process with a group (n = 16) of adolescent and young advisors in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. In a weekend workshop, participants reflected on their participation in 12 years of health and development-related research through theatre, song, visual methodologies and semi-structured interviews. Empirical findings suggest that participants interpreted the group research encounter as a site of empowerment, social support and as a socio-political endeavour. Through song, theatre and a mural ill

Infant temperament, early-childhood parenting, and early-adolescent development: Testing alternative models of Parenting × Temperament interaction.

Here we evaluate whether infant difficult temperament (6 months) functions as a vulnerability or more general plasticity factor when investigating effects of early-childhood parenting (8-42 months) on both positive and negative early-adolescent socioemotional development (age 8-11 years). Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, N = 14,541) and a re-parameterized model-testing approach to distinguish alternative person × environment conceptual models, results indicated that temperament × parenting interacted in predicting externalizing (i.e., hyperactivity,

Child reward neurocircuitry and parental substance use history: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use research has focused on family history of alcohol use disorders but less on other addictions in biological family members. We examined how parental substance use history relates to reward system functioning, specifically nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and putamen activation at age 9-10 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. This research hopes to address limitations in prior literature by focusing analyses on a large, substance-naïve sample. METHOD: We included ABCD participants with valid Monetary Incentive Delay task fMRI Baseline data and parent sub

Adolescent drug exposure: A review of evidence for the development of persistent changes in brain function.

Over the past decade, many studies have indicated that adolescence is a critical period of brain development and maturation. The refinement and maturation of the central nervous system over this prolonged period, however, makes the adolescent brain highly susceptible to perturbations from acute and chronic drug exposure. Here we review the preclinical literature addressing the long-term consequences of adolescent exposure to common recreational drugs and drugs-of-abuse. These studies on adolescent exposure to alcohol, nicotine, opioids, cannabinoids and psychostimulant drugs, such as cocaine a

Parenting Interacts with Oxytocin Polymorphisms to Predict Adolescent Social Anxiety Symptom Development: A Novel Polygenic Approach.

Guided by a developmental psychopathology framework, research has increasingly focused on the interplay of genetics and environment as a predictor of different forms of psychopathology, including social anxiety. In these efforts, the polygenic nature of complex phenotypes such as social anxiety is increasingly recognized, but studies applying polygenic approaches are still scarce. In this study, we applied Principal Covariates Regression as a novel approach to creating polygenic components for the oxytocin system, which has recently been put forward as particularly relevant to social anxiety.

Development of a Discrete-Choice Experiment (DCE) to Elicit Adolescent and Parent Preferences for Hypodontia Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to develop and test a discrete-choice experiment (DCE) survey to elicit adolescent and parent preferences for dental care for hypodontia (a developmental condition where one or more teeth fail to develop). METHODS: This was a mixed-methods study. Participants were adolescents (aged 12-16 years) with hypodontia and their parents and the dentists providing hypodontia care. Stage one entailed attribute development, as follows. (1) Attribute identification: systematic review of hypodontia literature; interviews with adolescents with hypodontia (n = 8) and parents (n =

The Development of an Interactive Health Education Model Based on the Djuwita Application for Adolescent Girls.

Alarming incidents of maternal deaths in Indonesia are due to three major causes: bleeding, sepsis, and hypertension, in addition to other non-obstetric causes and unsafe abortions. Adolescent girls contributed to maternal mortality based on early marriage, unwanted pregnancy, and childbirth. Prevention efforts have been taken through government programs and non-governmental organizations, but in practice those were considered ineffective. Thus, a preventative effort in the form of health education should be made, preferably embedded in a popular mobile application that most teenagers would be

Expanding the phenotype of Timothy syndrome type 2: an adolescent with ventricular fibrillation but normal development.

Timothy syndrome is a rare multiorgan disorder with prolonged QTc interval, congenital heart defects, syndactyly, typical facial features and neurodevelopmental problems. Ventricular tachyarrhythmia is the leading cause of death at early age. Classical Timothy syndrome type 1 (TS1) results from a recurrent de novo CACNA1C mutation, G406R in exon 8 A. An atypical form of Timothy syndrome type 2 (TS2) is caused by mutations in G406R and G402S in the alternatively spliced exon 8. Only one individual for each exon 8 mutations has been described. In contrast to multiorgan disease caused by the muta

Development and evaluation of a treatment fidelity instrument for family-based treatment of adolescent anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study provides data on the psychometric properties of a newly developed measure of treatment fidelity in Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN). The Family Therapy Fidelity and Adherence Check (FBT-FACT) was created to evaluate therapist adherence and competency on the core interventions in FBT. METHOD: Participants were 45 adolescents and their families sampled from three randomized clinical trials evaluating treatment for AN. Trained fidelity raters evaluated 19 therapists across 90 early session recordings using the FBT-FACT. They also rated an ad

The association of early childhood cognitive development and behavioural difficulties with pre-adolescent problematic eating attitudes.

OBJECTIVES: Few studies have prospectively investigated associations of child cognitive ability and behavioural difficulties with later eating attitudes. We investigated associations of intelligence quotient (IQ), academic performance and behavioural difficulties at 6.5 years with eating attitudes five years later. METHODS: We conducted an observational cohort study nested within the Promotion of Breastfeeding Intervention Trial, Belarus. Of 17,046 infants enrolled at birth, 13,751 (80.7%) completed the Children's Eating Attitude Test (ChEAT) at 11.5 years, most with information on IQ (n = 12

Sibling, peer, neighbor, and schoolmate correlations as indicators of the importance of context for adolescent development.

We use nationally representative data to calculate correlations in achievement and delinquency between genetically differentiated siblings within a family, between peers as defined by adolescents' "best friend" nominations, between schoolmates living in the same neighborhood, and between grademates within a school. We find the largest correlations between siblings, especially identical twins. Grademate and neighbor correlations are small. Peer-based correlations are considerably larger than grademate and neighbor correlations but not larger than most sibling correlations. The data suggest that

Assisting Screening of Adolescent Depression With Large Language Models as Symptom Detectors: Algorithm Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Depression prevalence is rising in adolescents and young adults (ages 10-24 years). Traditional screening methods for depression, such as the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), are particularly challenging for adolescents. AI has potential to help with this, but the scarcity of annotated datasets highlights the need for off-the-shelf approaches. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of using state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) to detect depressive symptoms in adolescent settings (ages 15-17 years). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of usi
