OBJECTIVE: Standard short adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test (SST) has traditionally been used for assessing adrenal gland fuction by intravenous (iv) application. However the iv form is not readily available in all countries, including Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the intramuscular (im) SST.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of adrenal enzyme dysfunction in women presenting with oligomenorrhoea and hirsutism, two clinical features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
DESIGN: A prospective study of women attending outpatient clinics with these complaints. OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis of the adrenal glands is a common cause of Addison's disease in developing countries. We conducted a study to determine if treatment of such patients with modern anti-tuberculous chemotherapy would lead to an improvement in plasma cortisol and aldosterone levels.

A dog was presented with a 2 year history of polyuria and polydipsia due to pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. A low-dose dexamethasone suppression test and measurement of plasma ACTH concentration confirmed the diagnosis. Treatment was instituted with mitotane at 44 mg/kg/day and then 88 mg/kg/d without complete resolution of signs. The dog collapsed with signs consistent with liver disease and was euthanased. Necropsy revealed a phaeochromocytoma of the left adrenal medulla with extensive metastases to the liver. A chromophobe adenoma of the pars intermedia of the pituitary was found.

Thirty-six former human growth hormone (hGH) recipients underwent comprehensive physical, endocrine and lipoprotein evaluations as adults. Treatment was associated with a decrease in height standard deviation score (SDS) in males from 4.0 pretreatment to 2.1 as adults, and in females from 4.2 to 2.5. The case records of six cats with hyperadrenocorticism presented to the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, over an 11-year period were reviewed. Signalment and clinical signs were similar to previous reports but, in contrast to other reports, only three cats had diabetes mellitus on presentation.
