Sickling crises and altitude. Occurrence in the Colorado patient population.

Seventy-five black patients with sickle hemoglobinopathies who are followed by the Colorado Sickle Cell Treatment and Research Center, and 172 of their family members were evaluated by retrospective interview for the occurrence of sickling crises when traveling in the Rocky Mountains or by aircraft. Twenty per cent of 39 patients with sickle cell anemia (Hgb SS) (Hgbs S/C and S/T) have developed crises when traveling in the mountains above 2000m. Vaso-occlusive crises predominated in the SS group and splenic crises occurred primarily in those with Hgbs S/C and S/T. Approximately 20 per cent of…

Traffic noise annoyance in the LIFE-adult study in Germany: Exposure-response relationships and a comparison to the WHO curves.

BACKGROUND: Noise annoyance is the second-highest cause of lost disability-adjusted life-years due to environmental noise in Europe. Evidence on exposure-response relationships (ERRs) for traffic noise annoyance with more accurate exposure values is still needed. OBJECTIVES: In an analysis of the population-based LIFE-Adult study in Leipzig, Germany, we aimed to investigate the effect of road, railway (train and tram), and aircraft noise on high annoyance (HA). METHODS: Traffic exposure data was taken for 2012 and data on noise annoyance was evaluated between 2018 and 2021. HA was defined ac…

The design and prescription of multifocal lenses for civil pilots.

The aging (presbyopic) pilot has difficulty with near vision which can be a serious problem in the cockpit because of the complexity and uniqueness of his visual tasks. Numerous individual studies have been reported, but the aviation industry and vision care professionals do not have available to them a set of guidelines to permit the optimum fitting of spectacles for civil aviation pilots. In this study the cockpit vision environment was studied in ten contemporary aircraft. Twenty-five pilots of seven of these aircraft types participated in a spectacle design study. Experimental spectacles w…

Health issues of air travel.

Every day in the United States the airline industry boards over 1.7 million passengers for a total of 600 million passengers per year. As these passengers enter the cabin of their aircraft few are aware of the artificial environment that will protect them from the hazards of flight. Passengers are exposed to reduced atmospheric pressure, reduced available oxygen, noise, vibration, and are subject to below zero temperatures that are only a quarter inch away-the thickness of the aircraft's skin. Over the past decade there have been both technical and lay articles written on the perception of poo…

The effects of brace position on injuries sustained in the M1 Boeing 737/400 disaster, January 1989. NLDB Study Group.

Of the initial 87 survivors of the East Midlands Boeing 737/400 aircraft, 77 sustained head and facial trauma during the crash, 45 of whom were rendered unconscious. There were 21 who received injuries to the back of their head, including 5 of the 6 severely head-injured adults. Those passengers who adopted the fully flexed "brace" position for crash-landing achieved significant protection against head injury, concussion, and injuries from behind irrespective of local aircraft structural damage. A computer graphics simulation developed by a commercial firm (H. W. Structures, Ltd.) using the pr…

Notes from the Field: Contact Tracing for Monkeypox virus Clade I Cases Associated with Air Travel - United States, November 2024-January 2025.

Monkeypox is a vesicular rash illness caused by Monkeypox virus (MPXV), which can be divided into clades (e.g., clade I and II), each of which includes subclades. MPXV is usually transmitted from person to person through close, sustained physical contact. Global spread of clade II MPXV began in 2022; to date, approximately 37,500 cases have been reported in the United States (provisional data), and domestic transmission is ongoing. CDC began conducting aircraft contact investigations for clade II MPXV in 2021. In February 2023, based on data showing no evidence of in-flight transmission of cla…

Design and Implementation of a New Training Flight Simulator System.

Aircraft flight simulators have good cost efficiency, high reusability, and high flight safety. All airlines and aircraft manufacturing companies choose it as sophisticated training equipment for ground simulation, effectively reducing pilot training costs, ensuring personnel safety and aircraft wear and tear. The new simulator proposed in this paper combines a digital motion-cueing algorithm, flight software and motion platform to make pilots feel as if they are in the real world. By using EtherCAT technology to drive the motion-cueing platform, it can improve the data transmission speed of t…

Aeromedical transfer of women at risk of preterm delivery in remote and rural Western Australia: why are there no births in flight?

OBJECTIVE: For more than three decades, women at imminent risk of preterm birth (PTB) in Western Australia have been transferred by small aircraft over long distances to the single tertiary level perinatal centre in Perth, with no known case of birth during the flight. We aimed to review recent experience to understand how aircraft travel may delay PTB. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study of 500 consecutive Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) transfers of women at risk of preterm labour to the tertiary referral centre, from September 2007 to December 31, 2009. MAIN OUTCOME M…

Effects of air traffic geometry on pilots' conflict detection with cockpit display of traffic information.

OBJECTIVE: This experiment attempted to identify the features of air traffic geometry that would influence the difficulty and biases of pilots' conflict detection using a cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI). BACKGROUND: There was previously no systematic study on effects of such features on conflict detection using the CDTI. METHOD: Twenty-four pilots viewed dynamic encounters between their own aircraft and an intruder aircraft on a simulated CDTI; difficulty was varied by the intruder aircraft's distance and time to closest point of approach (CPA), relative speed, miss distance at…

Rate dependent mechanical response of avian skeletal muscle under quasi-static and dynamic uniaxial tension.

Aircraft bird strikes pose a substantial threat to aircraft and passenger safety. In the event of bird-aircraft collisions, the forces exerted on aircraft components can cause extreme damage, severely impacting system performance or even causing catastrophic failure. The magnitude and severity of the forces exerted by birds on aircraft components during these violent events can vary drastically dependent on the initial conditions of impact. To better simulate these impact forces, robust quantitative data characterizing the rate and orientation dependent material behaviors of anatomical compone…

AED use in a passenger during a long-haul flight: repeated defibrillation with a successful outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death, and early defibrillation of ventricular fibrillation (VF) is the single most important intervention for improving survival. The automated external defibrillator (AED) and the concept of public access defibrillation provide a solution to shorten defibrillation delays. Commercial aircraft create a unique environment for the use of the AED since an emergency medical service system (EMS) response is not available. We review published studies on this subject and describe the case of a passenger who developed VF during an int…

Noise-induced hearing loss profile among Taiwan Airforce on duty pilots.

PURPOSE: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) often results in impaired functional hearing and accidental injuries; thus, reducing military performance and endangering flight safety. While a few studies addressing laterality (left-right ear differences) and NIHL incidence between fixed-winged (jet-fighter) and rotary-wing (helicopter) aircrafts yielded inconsistent results, little is known about the NIHL profile among different types of jet-fighter pilots. This study aims to conduct a fine-grained examination of NIHL among Airforce jet pilots, with planned comparisons of laterality and aircraft t…
