Amino Alcohols from Eugenol as Potential Semisynthetic Insecticides: Chemical, Biological, and Computational Insights.

A series of β-amino alcohols were prepared by the reaction of eugenol epoxide with aliphatic and aromatic amine nucleophiles. The synthesized compounds were fully characterized and evaluated as potential insecticides through the assessment of their biological activity against Sf9 insect cells, compared with a commercial synthetic pesticide (chlorpyrifos, CHPY). Three derivatives bearing a terminal benzene ring, either substituted or unsubstituted, were identified as the most potent molecules, two of them displaying higher toxicity to insect cells than CHPY. In addition, the most promising mole…

Heterogeneous photocatalytic anaerobic oxidation of alcohols to ketones by Pt-mediated hole oxidation.

We report a platinum nanocluster/graphitic carbon nitride (Pt/g-C3N4) composite solid catalyst with a photocatalytic anaerobic oxidation function for highly active and selective transformation of alcohols to ketones. The desirable products were successfully obtained in good to excellent yields from various functionalized alcohols at room temperature, including unactivated alcohols. Mechanistic studies indicated that the reaction could proceed through a Pt-mediated hole oxidation initiating an α-alcohol radical intermediate followed by a two-electron oxidation pathway. The merit of this strateg…

Investigation of polymers and alcohols produced in oxidized soybean oil at frying temperatures.

Although significant amounts of polymers associated with adverse health effects in oils are produced during frying, the chemical bonds forming these polymers are not well understood. This study revealed that ester bonds are responsible for the polymerization of soybean oil during frying and heating at 175 °C. The ester value of soybean oil increased during frying up to day 3 of the experiment and slightly decreased on day 4 of the experiment indicating that esterification and hydrolysis concomitantly occurred. The 13C NMR spectra showed further evidence of the formation of ester bonds. This st

Hydrogen Bonding in the Liquid State of Linear Alcohols: Molecular Dynamics and Thermodynamics.

Linear monohydroxy alcohols are strongly hydrogen-bonded liquids that are considered to be homologues of water. Here, we report ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the liquid alcohols, methanol to pentanol, and from the combined radial-angular probability distribution of the intermolecular O···O distances and HO···O angles determine the geometrical parameters that define the hydrogen bonds in these systems. The key feature of hydrogen bonds in the liquid alcohols, irrespective of the size of the alkyl group, is the strong orientation dependence with the donor-acceptor HO···O angle bein…

Synthesis of Phthalans Via Copper-Catalyzed Enantioselective Cyclization/Carboetherification of 2-Vinylbenzyl Alcohols.

Enantiomerically enriched phthalans were synthesized efficiently via an enantioselective copper-catalyzed alkene carboetherification reaction. In this reaction, 2-vinylbenzyl alcohols enantioselectively cyclize then couple with vinylarenes. The utility of the method was demonstrated by the enantioselective synthesis of ( R)-fluspidine, a σ1 receptor ligand.

Enhancing monoterpene alcohols in sweet potato shochu using the diglycoside-specific β-primeverosidase.

Monoterpene alcohols (MTAs) are characteristic flavour-imparting compounds in sweet potato shochu (Japanese distilled spirit) that are liberated following hydrolysis by specific enzymes during fermentation. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of an exogenously added diglycoside-specific β-glycosidase (β-primeverosidase) on aroma formation during shochu brewing using various sweet potato species to address whether MTAs are predominantly present as diglycosidic precursors in raw materials. The results showed that the amount of MTAs produced from enzyme-treated mash was dramatically inc…

One-Pot Synthesis of N-Substituted β-Amino Alcohols from Aldehydes and Isocyanides.

A practical two-stage one-pot synthesis of N-substituted β-amino alcohols using aldehydes and isocyanides as starting materials has been developed. This method features mild reaction conditions, broad scope, and general tolerance of functional groups. Based on a less common central carbon-carbon bond disconnection, this protocol complements traditional approaches that involve amines and various carbon electrophiles (epoxides, α-halo ketones, β-halohydrins). Medicinally relevant products can be prepared in a concise and efficient way from simple building blocks, as demonstrated in the synthesis…

Photocatalytic nucleophilic addition of alcohols to styrenes in Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov orientation.

The nucleophilic addition of methanol and other alcohols to 1,1-diphenylethylene (1) and styrene (6) into the Markovnikov- and anti-Markovnikov-type products was selectively achieved with 1-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyrene (Py) and 1,7-dicyanoperylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisimide (PDI) as photoredox catalysts. The regioselectivity was controlled by the photocatalyst. For the reductive mode towards the Markovnikov-type regioselectivity, Py was applied as photocatalyst and triethylamine as electron shuttle. This approach was also used for intramolecular additions. For the oxidative mode towar…

Hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions in aqueous mixtures of alcohols at a hydrophobic surface.

Aqueous solutions of alcohols are interesting because of their anomalous behavior that is believed to be due to the molecular structuring of water and alcohol around each other in solution. The interfacial structuring and properties are significant for application in alcohol purification processes and biomolecular structure. Here we study aqueous mixtures of short alcohols (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol) at a hydrophobic surface using interfacial statistical associating fluid theory which is a perturbation density functional theory. The addition of a small amount of alcohol dec…

A safety assessment of branched chain saturated alcohols when used as fragrance ingredients.

The Branched Chain Saturated Alcohol (BCSA) group of fragrance ingredients was evaluated for safety. In humans, no evidence of skin irritation was found at concentrations of 2-10%. Undiluted, 11 materials evaluated caused moderate to severe eye irritation. As current end product use levels are between 0.001% and 1.7%, eye irritation is not a concern. The materials have no or low sensitizing potential. For individuals who are already sensitized, an elicitation reaction is possible. Due to lack of UVA/UVB light-absorbing structures, and review of phototoxic/photoallergy data, the BCSA are not ex

Influence of gender on the metabolism of alcohols in human saliva in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate possible gender differences in salivary metabolism of two alcohols, ethanol and 2-propanol. Ethanol and its metabolite acetaldehyde may play important roles in tumour development, especially in the upper digestive tract. 2-Propanol is tested to elucidate our previous findings, where gender-specific differences in salivary acetone levels were seen after exposure to this alcohol. DESIGN: Saliva was collected from 25 females and 22 males for in vitro exposure to 2-propanol. In the experiments with ethanol, saliva samples were collected from 17 …

Methoxy-substituted stilbenes, styrenes, and 1-arylpropenes: photophysical properties and photoadditions of alcohols.

The photochemistry of trans-stilbene and four methoxy-substituted stilbene derivatives has been investigated in a variety of solvents. The fluorescence of all five trans isomers was quenched by 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE). Upon irradiation of the five substrates in TFE, the products derived from photoaddition of the solvent were detected. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the products formed by irradiation in TFE-OD indicated that the proton and nucleophile are attached to two adjacent atoms of the original alkene double bond. Irradiation of the corresponding methoxy-substituted styr

Detection and discrimination of phenol and primary alcohols in water using electronic noses.

Electronic nose methodology was used for discriminating between samples of n-primary alcohols and phenol in water. An electronic nose device developed at our laboratory was applied to detect the vapors from the samples. The device consists of 10 nonspecific gas sensors based on tin-dioxide, whose electrical conductivity change when exposed to the vapors. The whole set of responses constitutes a fingerprint associated with the sample for the particular array of sensors. Using this method, we could differentiate among n-primary alcohols, pure phenol, and aqueous dilutions of phenol. Dilutions of…

The DMAP-catalyzed acetylation of alcohols--a mechanistic study (DMAP = 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine).

The acetylation of tert-butanol with acetic anhydride catalyzed by 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) has been studied at the Becke3 LYP/6-311 + G(d,p)//Becke3 LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Solvent effects have been estimated through single-point calculations with the PCM/UAHF solvation model. The energetically most favorable pathway proceeds through nucleophilic attack of DMAP at the anhydride carbonyl group and subsequent formation of the corresponding acetylpyridinium/acetate ion pair. Reaction of this ion pair with the alcohol substrate yields the final product, tert-butylacetate. The compet

In vitro esterification of fatty acids by various alcohols in rats and rabbits.

The ability of six alcohols--1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-amyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol and 1-octanol--to esterify fatty acids in vitro was determined in liver, lung and pancreas from rats and rabbits by incubating tissue homogenates with [14C]oleic acid and isolating and quantifying the esterified fatty acid. There was considerable variation in the amount of esterified fatty acid formed depending upon the alcohol. The relative rates of formation among the tissues were pancreas >> liver > lung. In view of the deleterious effects associated with the esters formed by ethanol, considerati…

The effect of aliphatic alcohols on the transient potassium current in hippocampal neurones.

1. The transient potassium current was recorded in single hippocampal CA1 neurones from the rat by use of the whole-cell patch clamp technique. The effects on this current of a homologous series of aliphatic alcohols, ranging from butanol to octanol, were investigated. 2. The predominant effect of octanol (and the other alcohols) was to cause an increase in the initial rate of decay of the transient potassium current together with a slight decrease in the rate of decay of later phases of the current, such that the current decay became markedly non-monotonic. The alcohols also caused a decrease…

[Alcohol, alcoholism and drugs].

Abuse of alcohol (ethanol) and abuse of an increasing number of drugs (e.g. analgesics and sedatives) are among the outstanding social and medical problems of many industrialized countries including Switzerland. Since alcohol consumption has profound effects on both the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic actions of a variety of drugs, the rational use of drugs in alcoholics is an increasingly difficult task and requires a thorough understanding of the physiologic, biochemical, pharmacologic and toxic actions of alcohol. Clinically the most important targets of alcohol action are the liver and

Homogeneous copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes: mechanistic insights and recent advances.

Copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes has become a key transformation for the sustainable synthesis of carbonyl compounds, combining high efficiency with the use of molecular oxygen as a benign terminal oxidant. Owing to its earth-abundance, low cost, low toxicity, and versatile redox properties, copper offers a compelling alternative to traditional noble metal catalysts and stoichiometric oxidation methods. This review highlights the evolution of copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of alcohols, emphasizing two distinct mechanistic regimes: nitroxyl radical-mediated syste…
