Terminal osseous overgrowth is a common complication after trans-diaphyseal amputation in children, leading to pain, soft tissue problems, and recurrent surgical procedures. We report three different cases with post-amputation issues of osseous overgrowth, ulceration, and deformity over the amputation site. The first case involves a 9-year-old boy with a right leg congenital amputation secondary to amniotic band syndrome. The right below-knee stump later experienced recurrent episodes of osseous overgrowth, leading to ulceration. After the prominent tibia was resected and capped with the ipsil

This study compared the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores of traumatic (n=12) and vascular (n=12) unilateral lower limb amputees at admission and discharge from a rehabilitation facility. FIM scores that were measured were amputation FIM subscores and total FIM scores. Comorbidity indexes were developed to weight the stump condition and comorbidities seen in both groups. The vascular group was significantly (P<0.01) greater stump comorbidity, but there was no significant difference with respect to length of stay, medical comorbidity score, and amputation and total FIM scores both at

We describe four patients with above-knee amputations whose stump wounds failed to heal. After numerous revascularization attempts, these patients were diagnosed with nonreconstructable pelvic and groin vascular disease and were facing hip disarticulation. With the addition of hyperbaric oxygen treatment to vigilant wound care and negative pressure therapy, these patients healed their amputation stumps and were fit with prostheses. At their most recent follow-up, all patients were ambulating and using their prostheses.

Post-amputation pain causes great suffering to amputees, but still no effective drugs are available due to its elusive mechanisms. Our previous clinical studies found that surgical removal or radiofrequency treatment of the neuroma at the axotomized nerve stump effectively relieves the phantom pain afflicting patients after amputation. This indicated an essential role of the residual nerve stump in the formation of chronic post-amputation pain (CPAP). However, the molecular mechanism by which the residual nerve stump or neuroma is involved and regulates CPAP is still a mystery. In this study,

Delayed amputation after failed limb salvage can lead to negative clinical and functional outcomes due to complications, including re-amputation. This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes and identify risk factors according to the timing of amputation. A retrospective review of lower-extremity injuries managed between January 2016 and December 2022 at a level 1 trauma center was conducted. Outcomes were compared between early amputation (within 48 h) and delayed amputation (beyond 48 h) groups. The primary outcome was the risk of a more proximal amputation level according to the timing of

OBJECTIVE: Paleopathological analysis is combined with ethnohistorical, ethnographic and ethnomedical reports to assess the sociocultural implications for a historical nomadic Bedouin female following her survival of a below-knee amputation and multiple injuries to the stump.
MATERIALS: A middle-aged female recovered from a nomadic-style burial dated to the Late Ottoman Period (1789-1918) in Jordan's Wadi ath-Thamad region.
METHODS: Macroscopic and radiographic assessment.
RESULTS: A supracondylar femur (Hoffa) fracture, knee complex injury and lower leg amputation were observed on the righ

OBJECTIVE: To identify the microbial pathogens responsible for amputation wound infections, their distribution and antibiotic-sensitivity patterns.
METHOD: Consecutive patients who had limb amputations from April 2002 to March 2006 in an Nigerian hospital were recruited into this prospective observational study. The patients' demographic features, indications for amputation, microbiology of stump wound infections and the effects on length of hospital stay were reported.
RESULTS: Fifty-seven patients (mean age 34.6 +/- 19.2 years) had amputations in 58 limbs. Trauma leading to limb gangrene f

BACKGROUND: The fitting of a prosthesis after lower limb amputation is associated with several challenges. Skeletal stump-prosthesis interfaces and selective nerve transfer can partially overcome these but are also associated with new impairments that emphasize the necessity of innovative approaches. The concept of so-called spare part surgery with the use of fillet flaps could play an important role in this respect.
OBJECTIVE: An overview of the classical prosthesis-associated discomforts, advantages and disadvantages of treatment strategies and presentation of alternative surgical concepts.

Amputation of the second ray is a surgical treatment option when reconstruction and/or reimplantation fail. The aim of our study was to review the outcomes after transmetacarpal resection of the second ray following a post-traumatic injury and to assess indications, functional outcomes, and patient satisfaction. Between January 2003 and December 2013, 25 patients (6 women and 19 men with a mean age of 51 years) underwent transmetacarpal resection of their second ray after a post-traumatic injury. Sixteen patients were right-handed and 9 were left-handed. Injuries involved the dominant hand in

Klingsor Syndrome is an infrequent Surgical and Psychiatric emergency. We present such a case of self-penile amputation with delayed presentation precluding re-plantation. A 48 year-old man on follow-up for Schizophrenia presented 16 hours after peripubic self-penile amputation. Patient was managed by stump-plasty with an option for subsequent perineal urethrostomy. Anatomically, there are three levels of penile amputation: peri-pubic like in our case, proximal shaft and glans. Surgical options are re-plantation, stump-plasty and total penile reconstruction. Complications following re-plantati

Increasing use of suction-socket lower limb prostheses has been associated with an increased frequency of dermatological manifestations, linked to the fact that the skin of the amputation stump must adapt to an entirely new environment. In particular, verrucous hyperplasia and rare cases of acroangiodermatitis (pseudo-Kaposi sarcoma) have been described. We report a case of amputation stump dermatitis, clinically resembling verrucous hyperplasia, but with predominant histological aspects of acroangiodermatitis in a patient with a suction-socket lower limb prosthesis.

UNLABELLED: ntroduction: Lower limb amputation is a surgery performed as a last resort, when all other therapeutic options have been exhausted. The duration of treatment lasts from a few to several months and depends on the extent of amputation, the patient's overall health and the course of the stump healing process.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed using the database of the General and Vascular Surgery Ward of the Nikolay Pirogov Regional Specialist Hospital in Łódź. Patients who underwent lower limb amputation at the transfemoral level in 2017 were analyze

Revision amputation, ray amputation and narrowing of the hand can be indicated for pathological alterations of fingers and thumbs due to traumatic, inflammatory or vascular causes but also for functional deficits regarding mobility, sensibility, perfusion, and/or pain. Surgical amputation is considered if reconstructive options are no longer possible, not desired and are no longer meaningful with respect to effort and risks. Patients need to be informed about the expected deficits in function and esthetic appearance due to the amputation in advance. On the other hand, surgical amputations repr

Soft-tissue defects around the knees and below-the-knee amputation stumps are difficult to reconstruct. We present an option for reconstruction of these defects. Reversed flow saphenous island flaps, based on the medial inferior genicular artery, were successfully transferred in 6 patients. All wounds healed well postoperatively. The donor defect can be closed directly when the width is less than 7 cm. This is a thin and reliable fasciocutaneous flap that is useful in covering defects around the knee joint, popliteal fossa, upper half of the leg, and below-the-knee amputation stump.

To study the efficacy of an immediate postoperative prosthesis (IPOP) program, a retrospective review of 167 major lower-extremity amputations was performed. Patient enrollment in the IPOP program was based on the individual's potential for rehabilitation and participation in an aggressive postoperative physical therapy regimen, as determined by the surgeon, prosthetist, physical therapist, and social worker. Indications for amputation were intractable infection and/or severe unreconstructable arterial insufficiency. Sixty-five patients underwent 69 amputations with IPOP (59 below knee; 10 abo

Lower limb trauma often results in mangled extremities, and in some cases, complete amputation may be necessary. However, limiting the extent of amputation and preserving the major knee joint are crucial to enhance mobility and overall functionality. By providing painless soft tissue coverage on the stump, early prosthesis use and the initiation of physiotherapy become more feasible. Soft tissue transfers hold the potential to benefit patients in two essential aspects: first, resolving soft tissue deficiencies without causing bone shortening, and second, preparing the stump to enhance overall
