Anemia and osteopetrosis in a dog.

A 1-year-old, male Australian Shepherd Dog with consanguineous parents was discovered to have severe nonregenerative anemia associated with osteopetrosis. Diagnosis of the bone abnormality was established by skeletal radiography and microscopic examination of a rib biopsy specimen. The anemia was attributed to failure to develop normal marrow cavities combined with failure of extramedullary erythropoiesis. Although blood transfusions sustained the dog's life for 15 months, the dog died of a hemolytic transfusion reaction.

The electroencephalogram in pernicious anemia.

EEGs were recorded in 54 patients with pernicious anemia. Six patients without nervous system involvement had normal EEGs, 10 patients with spinal cord or peripheral nervous system involvement had normal or minimally abnormal EEGs, 17 of 19 patients with evidence of mental dysfunction had abnormal EEGs with the most consistent finding being an excess of theta slowing, and 19 patients with pernicious anemia and other neurologic diseases showed EEG findings reflecting the complicating disease process. In general, the EEG abnormalities in patients with pernicious anemia correlated well with the p…

A case of pernicious anemia requiring differential diagnosis of autoimmune hemolytic anemia complication.

An 80-year-old female was admitted to our hospital due to malaise. The initial diagnosis on admission was pernicious anemia (PA), Hashimoto thyroiditis and autoimmune atrophic gastritis. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia was suspected because direct antiglobulin test (DAT) was positive. Treatment with vitamin B12 improved anemia, with the disappearance of hemolysis. In some cases, PA patients with positive DAT may have hemolysis without the involvement of the autoimmune mechanism. Therefore, it is important to carefully assess PA patients with hemolysis and positive DAT for the prevention of unneces…

Aplastic anemia in systemic lupus erythematosus: a distinct presentation of acquired aplastic anemia?

Aplastic anemia is a rare but serious complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with an often dramatic and unanticipated onset. The peripheral destruction of formed blood elements, which frequently accompanies the syndrome, may obscure or delay the diagnosis of bone marrow suppression, and the number of published cases may be an underestimate of the actual incidence of the disease. Furthermore, the disease course may differ significantly from other forms of acquired aplastic anemia and seems to carry a more favorable prognosis once effectively diagnosed and treated. In addition, aplas…

Endurance swimming, intravascular hemolysis, anemia, and iron depletion. New perspective on athlete's anemia.

Swimmers were evaluated for the anemia, intravascular hemolysis, and iron deficiency reported in endurance runners. Plasma concentrations of ferritin, haptoglobin, and hemoglobin were measured in nine collegiate swimmers through the competitive season and in 23 adult swimmers before and after endurance races of 1.5 km to 10 km. About 10 percent of the swimmers had low hemoglobin concentrations. The severity of this "swimmer's anemia" correlated with the amount of swimming in both men and women. Intravascular hemolysis occurred during all the races; the fastest swimmers in the longest races had…

Sickle cell anemia patients have low erythropoietin levels for their degree of anemia.

We have studied serum immunoreactive erythropoietin (SIE) levels in 28 patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) without renal insufficiency and in 17 patients with nonhemoglobinopathy anemias of comparable severity using a sensitive radioimmunoassay procedure. An exponential relationship between SIE level and degree of anemia was noted in all patients. However, in nonhemoglobinopathy anemia, a sharp rise in the SIE level occurred as hemoglobin (Hb) levels fell below about 12 g/dL, whereas in sickle cell patients the increase was not marked until hemoglobin fell to about 9 g/dL. The response was …

The association between maternal anemia and neonatal anemia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Neonatal anemia has a long-term effect on children's growth and development. Anemia during pregnancy is also the most widespread nutritional deficiency among pregnant women in the world; If it leads to anemia in newborns, it will affect a wide range of people and be a public health problem worthy of attention. OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between maternal anemia during pregnancy and neonatal hemoglobin levels. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Web of science, Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase, ProQuest, Dissertations & Theses Global, The Cochrane Library, China Biology Medicine Database, Chine…
