Threatened pollinator and plant species in megadiverse countries: what we have learned from a synthesis of interactions for Brazil.

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for the reproduction of most flowering plants and the maintenance of biodiversity. With each new assessment of threat status, new plants and pollinators are included in the list of threatened species. However, the ecological interactions established by threatened plants and pollinators are largely unknown. To support conservation planning for threatened plants and pollinators, we surveyed interactions for the plant and pollinator species listed in the official threatened species lists for Brazil. We found data on plant-pollinator interactions for les

Dangerous Measures: A Case Report and Review of Motoro Ray Envenomation.

Aquatic envenomations may cause severe tissue injury, neurologic morbidity, and even mortality among those whose leisure and/or occupational activities expose them to marine and freshwater animals. The Motoro ray, or Potamotrygon motoro (also known as an ocellate river stingray) is endemic to freshwater tributaries throughout Brazil, and is a frequent source of severe envenoming of local fisherman and those residing near waterways. Local wound management including immersion in warm water, wound cleaning and debridement, as well as antibiotics are mainstays of treatment, as are local anesthetic

Plant-Associated Bacteria as Sources for the Development of Bioherbicides.

Weeds cause significant yield losses in crop production and influence the health of animals and humans, with some exotic weeds even leading to ecological crises. Weed control mainly relies on the application of chemical herbicides, but their adverse influences on the environment and food safety are a significant concern. Much effort has been put into using microbes as bioherbicides for weed control. As plant-associated bacteria (PAB), they are widely present in the rhizophere, inside crops or weeds, or as pathogens of weeds. Many species of PAB inhibit the seed germination and growth of weeds

Monkeypox: An Emerging Disease.

Until the month of April 2022, cases of monkeypox virus infection in humans were hardly documented outside of the endemic African regions. There are cases now throughout the world. Infected exotic pets have taken the monkeypox virus out of Africa. Following the universal eradication of smallpox in the 1970s, occurrences of monkeypox have attracted attention on a global scale. The western hemisphere and European nations are seeing the majority of the monkeypox infections linked to the 2022 epidemic. Numerous groups are working on contact-tracing initiatives, but it is still unclear what started

The absence of zoonotic agents in invasive bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) in Belgium and The Netherlands.

Exotic invasive bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are considered to exert a considerable negative impact on native amphibian communities. This can be due to competition and predation, but they are also a notorious source of the infectious diseases chytridiomycosis and ranavirosis, affecting amphibian populations globally. Little is known regarding their carriage of other microbial agents that might be transferred to humans or other animals. In this study we determined the occurrence of the amphibian pathogens Ranavirus and Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and of the zoonotic agents Coxiella bu

[Human monkeypox].

Unlike other recent viral emergences, which were in majority caused by RNA viruses, the monkeypox results from infection by a DNA virus, an orthopoxvirus closely related to both vaccine and smallpox viruses and whose two genomic variants are known. Unexpectedly isolated from captive Asiatic monkeys and first considered as an laboratory curiosity, this virus was recognised in 1970 as an human pathogen in tropical Africa. Here it was responsible for sporadic cases following intrusions (for hunting) into tropical rain forests or rare outbreak with human-to-human transmission as observed in 1996 i

Description of helminthic fauna of Trachemys scripta (Thunberg in Schoepf, 1792) in a protected area in Northern Italy: evidence of co-introduction of non-native helminth species.

Biological invasions are occurring at an unprecedented rate around the globe. Their impact on biodiversity is mediated both by direct competition with native species and by the alteration of transmissible disease dynamics. The red eared slider Trachemys scripta is considered one of the most successful invasive species across Europe, and has proved to be a stronger competitor with the native freshwater turtle Emys orbicularis. Nevertheless, few studies have explored parasites of T. scripta in the countries of introduction. Aiming to explore the taxonomic helminth composition of T. scripta and a

Molecular characterization of Spirometra isolates across the USA.

Spirometra is a genus of zoonotic cestodes with an ambiguous species-level taxonomic history. Previously, Spirometra mansonoides was considered the only species present in North America. However, recent molecular data revealed the presence of at least three distinct species in the USA: Spirometra sp. 2 and 3, and Spirometra mansoni. This study aimed to elucidate the diversity and potential host associations of Spirometra species among companion animals in the USA. Samples (N = 302) were examined from at least 13 host species, including mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Sample types included eg

Bovine besnoitiosis and its effect on the male reproductive system.

Besnoitia besnoiti and several species of the genus have been reported in a variety of domestic and wild animals in many parts of the world (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Cutaneous besnoitiosis in cattle has been described as a serious skin condition characterized by painful swellings, alopecia and thickening of the skin (6). It is a chronic, debilitating and occasionally fatal disease with both cutaneous and systemic manifestations (6, 7, 8). Besnoitia cysts and lesions have been observed in the testes, epididymes and blood vessels of bulls (9). The possibility of abortion in cows and sterility in bulls wi

Prevalence of Mycobacterium Bovis infection and associated risk factors among dairy farm cattle in Mekelle and Wukro towns, Northern Ethiopia.

Bovine tuberculosis (BTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, contributes significantly to human tuberculosis in developing countries, accounting for 10-15% of cases in Ethiopia. This study assessed the prevalence of BTB and associated risk factors in dairy cattle in Mekelle city and Wukro town, North Ethiopia, and evaluated farm workers' awareness of its zoonotic significance. A cross-sectional study (2020-2021) tested 240 dairy cows using comparative intradermal tuberculin skin testing and cultured 140 milk samples. BTB prevalence was 7.1% by skin test (7.5% in Mekelle, 6.3% in Wukro) and 4.1% b

Detection of skunk adenovirus-1 in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius).

We describe gross pathology, histopathology, ultrastructure, and molecular characterization of skunk adenovirus 1 (SkAdV-1) in 3 ferrets (Mustela putorius) submitted to the Infectious Diseases Laboratory, Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service at the University of Georgia. Case 1 came from a cohort with a 6-week history of multiple ferrets with respiratory disease and mortality. Cases 2 and 3 were submitted 19 days later; they died 3 days after arrival at the vendor's facility. Histopathological evaluation found evidence of suppurative bronchopneumonia, with intralesional gram-positive cocci

Active Case Finding of Current Bornavirus Infections in Human Encephalitis Cases of Unknown Etiology, Germany, 2018-2020.

Human bornavirus encephalitis is a severe and often fatal infection caused by variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) and Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1). We conducted a prospective study of bornavirus etiology of encephalitis cases in Germany during 2018-2020 by using a serologic testing scheme applied along proposed graded case definitions for VSBV-1, BoDV-1, and unspecified bornavirus encephalitis. Of 103 encephalitis cases of unknown etiology, 4 bornavirus infections were detected serologically. One chronic case was caused by VSBV-1 after occupational-related contact of a person with exot

Improving dairy production in Malawi: a literature review.

Milk production in Malawi is stagnating while steadily increasing in neighboring countries. We performed a literature review to identify factors negatively affecting milk production in Malawi and propose potential solutions to overcome the particular constraints. We structured the analysis along the value chain with three major components: upstream providers, on-farm production, and downstream providers. It is shown that the literature strongly focuses on on-farm constraints and most prominently on animal health, breed choice, and milk yield. The literature research did not reveal any reasons

Epidemiology and Risk Modelling of Influenza A Virus Within and Between Pig Herds in Northern Lao PDR.

Animal-origin influenza A virus (IAV) is a perennial candidate for causing the next pandemic. With high risk for interspecies IAV transmission but limited resources for surveillance, particularly in rural areas of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Laos, there is a need to develop targeted, risk-based strategies for early detection of novel IAVs that may emerge in pigs. We conducted (1) a cross-sectional survey to characterise pig producer types, management practices and pig movement patterns; (2) sampling among pigs in slaughterhouses to quantify IAV seroprevalence and infection

Multisystemic corynebacteriosis caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in a captive Brazilian porcupine (Coendouprehensilis).

A captive, 3-year-old, male Brazilian porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) was found dead in its enclosure at a wildlife facility in the USA, with no prior clinical signs reported. At necropsy, the animal was in poor body condition with malocclusion of the maxillary incisors. Numerous tan-to-white, firm nodules, ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, were present in the lungs, heart, pancreas and right kidney. Histologically, multifocal to coalescing pyogranulomas composed of foamy macrophages, multinucleated giant cells and peripheral lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates surrounded central areas of case

Typing of Brucella field strains isolated from livestock populations in Italy between 2001 and 2006.

The identification of species and biovars of Brucella field strains isolated in outbreaks is essential to fully understand the epidemiology of the disease and to trace sources of infection, thereby improving the outcome of brucellosis eradication programmes. It is important to identify the presence of Brucella strains in livestock populations and to determine the presence of new strains that might previously have been considered exotic. In this study, 732 Brucella strains isolated from livestock were submitted for typing by the Italian Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali to the National Refe

Hosts and parasites as aliens.

Over the past decades, various free-living animals (hosts) and their parasites have invaded recipient areas in which they had not previously occurred, thus gaining the status of aliens or exotics. In general this happened to a low extent for hundreds of years. With variable frequency, invasions have been followed by the dispersal and establishment of non-indigenous species, whether host or parasite. In the literature thus far, colonizations by both hosts and parasites have not been treated and reviewed together, although both are usually interwoven in various ways. As to those factors permitti
