Induction of chronic copper poisoning in ten boma-confined impala was attempted in a randomized, single dose, parallel designed, titration study using five increasing oral doses, ranging between 125 mg/kg to 1000 mg/kg, of copper oxide needles. Two untreated impala were kept as controls. Impala (n = 1) from each treatment group were culled 52 d and 105 d after treatment and examined for tissue copper accumulation and signs of chronic copper poisoning. Despite the high doses of copper administered to the impala and liver copper concentrations above 150 ppm WM achieved in two animals, no clinica

Ciguatera fish poisoning represents an impediment to the development of fisheries based on shallow water reef fish stocks and to the food security of islands where agriculture is limited. Although fisheries development initiatives in the past 20 years in the Pacific have focused on the development of deep slope fisheries and fisheries for large pelagics such as tuna, shallow reef fisheries continue to be a major animal protein source for Pacific Islanders and a source of commercial revenue for fishermen. Statistics on ciguatera outbreaks in the Pacific are limited to local databases in Hawaii

The more important food-borne diseases in Singapore are food poisoning, enteric fever, cholera and hepatitis A. Bacterial food poisoning caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella and Vibrio parahaemolyticus is prevalent, but chemical poisoning due to ingestion of toxic plants and animals is uncommon. Enteric fevers have been brought under control. An increasing proportion of the cases reported in recent years were imported from Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Cholera continues to be introduced into the country with sporadic cases reported from time to time. Hepatitis A remains an

The oxime HI 6 is considered to be effective in soman poisoning and less effective in tabun poisoning. Recently, HLö 7 was shown to reactivate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibited by soman and tabun. Therefore, the efficacy of HLö 7 and HI 6 was compared in soman poisoned guinea-pigs. Female Pirbright-white guinea-pigs were anaesthetized with urethane (1.8 g/kg) and the a. carotis, v. jugularis and trachea were cannulated. After base line measurements soman 0.08 mg/kg (= 5 x LD50) or 0.16 mg/kg (= 10 x LD50) was injected intravenously, 2 min. later the antidotes were applied intravenously: HL

Organophosphorus compounds are widely used in agriculture, but their poisoning poses a great threat. This study focuses on exploring the therapeutic effects of rePON1Q192 and rePON1R192 on mice poisoned with different types of organophosphorus compounds. These two recombinant proteins are prepared via gene synthesis into the pET - 32a vector and expression in E. coli BL21.Organophosphorus compounds are divided into two groups by structure: one group contained a pyrimidine ring (similar in structure to diazinon), and the other group contained multiple chlorine atoms (similar in structure to chl

Despite established exposure limits and safety standards as well as the availability of carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, each year 50,000 people in the United States visit emergency departments for CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from brief exposures to high levels of CO or from longer exposures to lower levels. Common symptoms can include headaches, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, general malaise, and altered mental status. Some patients may have chest pain, shortness of breath, and myocardial ischemia, and may require mechanical ventilation and treatment of shock. Individuals p

This work summarizes the mortality cases of twenty-five free-ranging Eurasian wild brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) from the Cantabrian mountain range submitted for necropsy in Asturias and Castilla y León (northwestern Spain) from 1998 to 2018. Mortality cases were classified both caused by (i) "non-human intervention" or "human intervention" causes and based on (ii) "non-infectious" or "infectious" etiology. In four cases (16%) it was not possible to determine the cause of death due to the inadequate preservation of collected specimens or insufficient tissue availability. Based on "non-huma

BACKGROUND: Fatal cases of exposure to paralytic shellfish toxins and palytoxins have occurred in companion animals but are poorly described.
METHODS: We describe one case of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and three cases of palytoxin poisoning in dogs.
RESULTS: Mild PSP occurred following ingestion of crab while walking on a beach. Analysis confirmed the presence of paralytic shellfish toxins, particularly decarbamoyl saxitoxin, in clinical samples and marine organisms. This case occurred shortly after an outbreak of PSP in dogs on the eastern coast of England. Palytoxin poisoning occu

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by Staphylococcus aureus are the most recognizable causative agents of emetic food poisoning in humans. New types of SEs and SE-like (SEl) toxins have been reported. Several epidemiological investigations have shown that the SEs and SEl genes, particularly, SEK, SEL, SEM, SEN and SEO genes, are frequently detected in strains isolated from patients with food poisoning. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the emetic activity of recently identified SEs using a small emetic animal model, the house musk shrew. The emetic activity of these SEs

Bolesatine is a toxic glycoprotein isolated from Boletus satanas Lenz, which inhibits protein synthesis in vivo and in vitro. The LD50 (24 h) is 1 mg /kg bw (i.p.), in mice and rats. When given i.p. to mice (0.1 - 1.0 mg/kg bw) bolesatine induced thrombi and blood stasis in the liver, 5 - 21 h after injection, and modifications of the number of blood corpuscles in peripheral blood. These effects were efficiently reversed by aspirin, ticlopidin and heparin (as attested by histology and electron microscopy) which however failed to prevent death in animals given lethal doses. Together, these resu

The widespread use of pesticides to control agricultural pests is a hot topic on the public scene of environmental health. Selective pest control for minimum environmental impact is a major goal of the environmental toxicology field, notably to avoid unintended poisoning in different organisms. Anticoagulant rodenticides cause abnormal blood coagulation process; they have been widely used to control rodents, allowing inadvertent primary and secondary exposure in domestic animals and non-target predatory wildlife species through direct ingestion of rodenticide-containing bait or by consumption

INTRODUCTION: Acute self-poisoning with the organophosphorus (OP) pesticide dimethoate has a human case fatality three-fold higher than poisoning with chlorpyrifos despite similar animal toxicity. The typical clinical presentation of severe dimethoate poisoning is quite distinct from that of chlorpyrifos and other OP pesticides: many patients present with hypotension that progresses to shock and death within 12-48 h post-ingestion. The pathophysiology of this syndrome is not clear.
CASE REPORTS: We present here three patients with proven severe dimethoate poisoning. Clinically, all had inappr

INTRODUCTION: Sulcotrione is a herbicidal agent belonging to the family of triketones. Sulcotrione herbicides are used for weed control in maize and flax crops. To date, no cases of human poisoning had been reported in the literature linked to different herbicidal agents in the triketone family. We report here on two cases of the voluntary ingestion of this substance in the form of the branded product Mikado(TM), which were recorded by the Angers Poison Centre.
CASE REPORT: Both cases of voluntary ingestion constituted attempted suicide, and involved two men aged 30 and 37 years. Their sympto

In order to analyze and clarify the thermal stability of food poisoning Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) enterotoxin-like X (SElX) and the biological characteristics of digestive enzymes, and to evaluate the risk of S. aureus carrying selx gene in food poisoning, the selx gene carrying rates of 165 strains isolated from 95 food poisoning events from 2006 to 2019 were first statistically analyzed. Subsequently, the purified recombinant SElX protein was digested and heated, and the superantigen activity was verified with mouse spleen cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells of kittens. At t

1. Hospital records at the six major referral hospitals in urban Zimbabwe were reviewed for the years 1980-1989 in order to determine the types of snake, incidence, morbidity and mortality associated with snake venom poisoning. 2. A total of 1087 cases of animal toxin poisoning were retrieved retrospectively, 91.5% (995) of which were due to snake venom poisoning. Of the 995 cases, 50.9% (506) were females and 49.1% (489) males. The majority of patients were aged from 21 to 30 years (22%), followed by the 6-15 (16%) and the 16-20 year age groups (11%), respectively. 3. The mean period of hospi

It has been shown that HI-6 was the most potent oxime so far known in poisoning by sarin, VX , and soman, but its protective effect in tabun poisoning, allegedly due to poor reactivation of inhibited ChE, was much less pronounced. We have found that the thiocholine-like analog of tabun , O-ethyl, N-N- dimethyamino -S-(2-diethylaminoethyl)- thiophosphatemethylsul fomethylate (Ta-S-N+), was very useful in resolving this problem and established the relationship between reactivating and protective effects of PAM-2 Cl, HI-6, and HGG-12 in rats. PAM-2 Cl (protective ratio (PR) = 22.1) and HI-6 (PR =

Tetanus disease is one of the most dramatic and globally prevalent diseases of humans and vertebrate animals, and has been reported for over 24 centuries. The manifestation of the disease, spastic paralysis, is caused by the second most poisonous substance known, the tetanus toxin, with a human lethal dose of approximately 1 ng/kg. Fortunately, this disease is successfully controlled through immunization with tetanus toxoid; nevertheless, according to the World Health Organization, an estimated 400,000 cases still occur each year, mainly of neonatal tetanus. The causative agent of tetanus dise

Poisonings resulting from DEET are rarely encountered in companion animals. In human patients, DEET toxicosis has been associated with the development of a toxic encephalopathy characterized by tremors, seizures, behavioral changes, and abnormal movements. Generally, DEET toxicosis in companion animals is of short duration and is characterized by vomiting, tremors, ataxia, and excitation. Treatment for DEET toxicosis includes symptomatic therapy and decontamination.
