Role of Ultrasound in Evaluating Ligament Injuries Around the Ankle: A Narrative Review.

Ultrasound has emerged as a valuable imaging modality for evaluating ligamentous injuries around the ankle joint, offering several advantages over traditional imaging techniques. It is more cost-effective and widely available than MRI, and it avoids the ionizing radiation exposure associated with X-rays, making it a safer option, particularly for pediatric and adolescent populations. In cases of inversion ankle sprains, ultrasound allows for more accurate assessment of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) compared to X-rays and manual examination and yiel

[Physical rehabilitation for ankle joint injuries in elderly and elderly people (Stage 1).].

A multidisciplinary approach to recovery after injuries of the ankle joint in elderly and senile people by specialists of various profiles using drug and non-drug methods is especially relevant today. It is required to develop and put into practice various options for the combined use of physical rehabilitation means at different stages of the rehabilitation treatment of elderly and senile patients with this pathology. The study revealed no significant complications and side effects when using this technique, which allows us to recommend it as a means of secondary prevention and injuries of th

[Physical rehabilitation for ankle joint injuries in elderly and elderly people (Stage 2).].

The main part of the injuries of elderly and senile patients as a result of physical activity falls on the lower limbs, due to the increased load during movement. Ankle injuries have a multifactorial etiology involving the interaction of compensatory spinal and leg biomechanics, environmental factors, and shoe selection. In this regard, it is necessary to prepare a complex of rehabilitation measures, including physical therapy, with the possibility of implementing the recovery process not only on an outpatient basis, but also at home, thereby improving the quality of life and preventing disabi…

Influence of tendon injuries on the clinical outcome of ankle and hindfoot fractures.

BACKGROUND: Associations of tendon injuries with ankle and hindfoot fractures is a current concern and recent research has linked specific fractures with specific tendon injuries, despite its functional impact being unknown. The purpose of this study is to assess that impact. METHODS: Computed tomography scans of patients with ankle and hindfoot fractures were reviewed for tendon injuries. Patients were clinically evaluated with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ), via a telephonic interview. RESULTS: Eighty-five patients were included in the

Deltoid Ligament Injuries Associated With Ankle Fractures: Arguments For and Against Direct Repair.

Ankle fractures are an extremely common orthopaedic injury treated by surgeons on a routine basis. The deltoid ligament is torn in a large number of these fractures and is commonly seen with associated radiographic changes of medial clear space widening. The clinical relevance of addressing the injured deltoid ligament with acute surgical repair has been debated for decades. The early literature documenting repair or reconstruction of the deltoid ligament dates back to the 1950s. Most commonly, orthopaedic surgeons restore the lateral column directly with fibula fracture fixation. The injury m

Epidemiology of injuries due to ankle sprain diagnosed in an orthopedic emergency room.

OBJECTIVE: To use magnetic resonance imaging to assess the prevalence of foot and ankle ligament injuries and fractures associated with ankle sprain and not diagnosed by x-ray. METHODS: We included 180 consecutive patients with a history of ankle sprain, assessed at a primary care service in a 12-month period. Magnetic resonance imaging findings were recorded and described. RESULTS: Approximately 92% of patients had some type of injury shown on the magnetic resonance imaging. We found 379 ligament injuries, 9 osteochondral injuries, 19 tendinous injuries and 51 fractures. Only 14 magnetic re

WITHDRAWN: Immobilisation and functional treatment for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries in adults.

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle ligament injuries (ankle sprains) are common problems in acute medical care. The treatment variation observed for the acutely injured lateral ankle ligament complex suggests a lack of evidence-based management strategies for this problem. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effectiveness of methods of immobilisation for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries and to compare immobilisation with functional treatment methods. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group specialised register (December 2001); the

Incidence and variance of foot and ankle injuries in elite college football players.

We conducted a study on the risk for foot and ankle injuries in college football players on the basis of injury type and player position. In February 2006, we evaluated 320 intercollegiate football players at the National Football League Combine. All pathologic conditions and surgical procedures of the foot and ankle were recorded, and data were analyzed by player position to detect any trends. Seventy-two percent (n = 231) of the players had a history of foot and ankle injuries, with a total of 287 foot and ankle injuries (1.24 injuries/player injured). The most common injuries were lateral a…

Osteoarthritis in other joints (hip, elbow, foot, ankle, toes, wrist) after sports injuries.

Osteoarthritis of nonknee joints, although less common than knee osteoarthritis, remains a significant and disabling condition for many present and former athletes. These injuries can be caused by repeated loads or following a specific traumatic event. The resulting pain and loss of motion can limit function and ability. Arthroscopic techniques in many cases enable surgeons to symptomatically treat limitations of range of motion and pain, prolonging active careers. Joint replacement remains the ultimate solution for hip osteoarthritis, and may be a viable option in ankle osteoarthritis.

[Nonoperative approach to injuries of the lateral collateral ligament of the ankle joint].

Patients in number of 185 were included in this study. All of them were treated nonoperatively. One group (64 patients) was treated with early mobilization treatment and the other one (121 patients) with three weeks cast immobilization. Checking examination was done twice: 5 weeks and one year after injury. Chi-square test was used for data processing. Patients treated with cast had shorter recovery, but three were not statistical differences. Positive ADS test one year after the injury (I group 4.7%, and II group 2.5%) was considered as poor result and so was functional instability a year aft

Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis of growth pattern after supination--eversion ankle injuries in children.

In a prospective study of ankle fractures in children, the growth rate was registered with a roentgen stereophotogrammetric method. The injuries were classified traumatologically according to Gerner-Smidt and anatomically according to Salter and Harris. Twenty-six ankle fractures were classified as supination--eversion injuries. Of these, eight had intraarticular injuries, 16 had extraarticular injuries of the distal tibia, and two had a zigzag fracture through the growth plate of the distal fibula. Information about growth was obtained within 3 months after fracture, and the growth pattern wa

Roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis of growth pattern after supination-adduction ankle injuries in children.

In a prospective study of supination-adduction (SA) ankle fractures in children, the post-traumatic growth pattern was registered with a roentgen stereophotogrammetric technique allowing exact determination of the growth rate within 3 months after fracture. It was possible to predict future growth pattern within 6 months. The SA injuries (10 cases) were divided into two stages according to Gerner-Smidt. One Stage I injury (physeal separation through the distal fibula) showed a growth stimulation. Nine Stage II injuries (including a fracture through the medial malleolus) showed four types of gr
