An unusual case of median cleft of the lower lip associated with bifid tongue and cleft palate is described. Four years later, the child developed a submental epidermoid cyst.

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness, surgical techniques, and safety outcomes of lingual frenum release in infants with feeding difficulties. Methods: The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024482618). Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from 1946 to May 2025 for studies meeting inclusion criteria. The population included mother-infant dyads with feeding difficulties where infants with restrictive frenum underwent surgical release. The primary outcome measured included feeding difficulties, technique comparison, post-care, and adverse events. Fo

OBJECTIVE: This study compares the efficacy of oral exercise alone to oral exercise with frenectomy in improving obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) symptoms and quality of life (QOL) in patients with ankyloglossia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, controlled, double-blind clinical study enrolled fifteen adults (20-60 years) newly diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA and ankyloglossia. Participants were randomly assigned to either oral exercise alone (control group; n = 8) or oral exercise with frenectomy (intervention group; n = 7). Outcomes were assessed after a 3-month therapy period using p…

PURPOSE: Alterations of the lingual frenulum may contribute to oromyofacial dysfunction, speech and swallowing impediments, underdevelopment … tion ratio as an initial screening tool to assess for restrictions in tongue mobility. "Functional" ankyloglossia can thus be defined and treatment effects followed objectively by using the proposed grading scale: grade 1: tongue range of motion ratio is >80%, grade 2 50-80%, grade 3 < 50%, grade 4 < 25%.

PURPOSE: Generating adequate tongue pressure against the hard palate requires full-range mobility of the tongue. The study aimed to (1) determine the prevalence of restricted tongue mobility and ankyloglossia and (2) determine whether, in children with restricted tongue mobility, their condition also affects tongue pressure.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of healthy 6-8-year-old children from primary schools in central Vietnam was conducted in 2019. Restricted tongue mobility and ankyloglossia were graded using the tongue range of motion ratio (TRMR), with the tongue-tip-to-incisive papilla…

Ankyloglossia or "tongue-tie," observed in neonates, children, or adults, is characterized by an abnormally short, thick, fibrosed lingual frenulum which may cause restriction in function of tongue including limitation in tongue movement. The use of Hazelbaker Assessment Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function allows elaborate and extensive scoring of the anomaly. This article reports the surgical management of an 11-year-old patient having ankyloglossia associated with restricted movement of tongue and difficulty in speech. Six months postoperatively, the patient showed uneventful healing and was …

Craniofacial defects involving the lip and/or palate are among the most common human birth defects. X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia results from loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding the T-box transcription factor TBX22. Further studies show that TBX22 mutations are also found in around 5% of non-syndromic cleft palate patients. Although palate defects are obvious at birth, the underlying developmental pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we report a Tbx22(null) mouse, which has a submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and ankyloglossia, similar to the human phenotype, with a small min…

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia is commonly reported as one of the major causes of breastfeeding difficulty. There is a lack of research on infant growth and latching performance with clinical measures.
CASES PRESENTATION: We describe a series of eight clinical cases (three female and five male infants) in a specialized breastfeeding center in a tertiary hospital in Northeast Brazil. The mothers were of mixed race and ranged from 13 to 41 years of age. Ankyloglossia was diagnosed within the first 48 hours after delivery. We measured the standards of growth, the mothers' perception of breastfeeding,…

The gene for X-linked cleft palate (CPX) has previously been mapped in an Icelandic kindred between the unordered proximal markers DXS1002/DXS349/DXS95 and the distal marker DXYS1X, which maps to the proximal end of the X-Y homology region in Xq21.3. Using six sequence-tagged sites (STSs) within the region, a total of 91 yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) clones were isolated and overlapped in a single contig that spans approximately 3.1 Mb between DXS1002 and DXYS1X. The order of microsatellite and STS markers in this was established as DXS1002-DXS1168-DSX349-DXS95-DXS364-DXS 1196-DXS262-DXS11

X-linked cleft palate (CPX) is a rare nonsyndromic form of orofacial clefting that is, unlike more common forms, inherited as a highly penetrant Mendelian trait. Linkage studies using a large Icelandic kindred localized the gene to Xq21.3, and a physical map defining a 2.0-Mb candidate region was subsequently constructed. Genomic sequence is now available for much of the critical region and has been surveyed for potential transcriptional units. Through this analysis, we have identified a novel human homologue of Kelch, KLHL4. The transcript represents a mRNA of approximately 3.6 kb and encodes

(1) Background: The incidence of ankyloglossia is 0.02-10.7%. Its effect on selected dysfunctions has been described; however, no studies report its impact on several disorders in a group of subjects. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of ankyloglossia on swallowing, speech, occlusion and periodontium. (2) Methods: The study group consisted of 86 patients with ankyloglossia, and the control group (n = 86) had a normal tongue frenulum. Type of swallowing, tongue mobility, speech, occlusion and periodontium were assessed. (3) Results: Ankyloglossia pertained to 75.6% patients with in…

Introduction Ankyloglossia (tongue-tie), is a condition marked by a shortened lingual frenulum, potentially hindering tongue mobility and function. Controversies exist among the literature and professionals regarding the classification, clinical significance, and management techniques of ankyloglossia. The role of healthcare professionals in assessing and managing ankyloglossia lacks well-defined parameters in international publications and guidelines.Aims This review aims to provide a broad overview of ankyloglossia, as well as enlighten readers on the overarching evidence surrounding the top…
