In a controlled experiment, we compared renal-hepatal, haematological and organ histopathology responses in chickens treated with Crude extracts of Capsicum annuum L. and Carica papaya L. to those treated with synthetic anthelmintics. Resistance to anthelmintics in gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) is highly prevalent, as these parasites have been treated with anthelmintics for decades in ruminants and horses. Anthelmintics belong to different classes, each with a different mode of action. PURPOSE: Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN), a form of posterior uveitis, is secondary to the presence of a highly motile nematode in the intraretinal or subretinal space. The following account is based on a review lecture given recently at the British Society of Parasitology. We point out that nematode parasites cause very widespread infections of humans, particularly in economically underdeveloped areas where sanitation and hygiene are not adequate. The efficacy of the original drug fluzamide (a N,S-containing heterocycle derivative) was evaluated by primary screening on a modified model of monoinvasion with the luminal form of Echinococcus multilocularis and on an original model of intestinal mixed invasion of E. multilocularis and Hymenolepsis nana at the immature and mature stages of the parasites in golden hamsters when an experimental host was immunosuppressed with hydrocortisone. The efficacy of fluzamide in an oral dose of 0.3 g/kg against young E. multilocularis and H. nana (the duration of their invasion was 7 days) was 99.8-100%

Mice experimentally infected with Trichinella spiralis were used to test the therapeutic effectiveness of an anthelmintic, methyl 6-(phenylsulfinyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carbamate, against the immature and adult worms during the intestinal phase of infection. A single oral dose of 100 mg kg-1 of the drug on the third day after exposure to infection was totally ineffective against the adult worms as determined at necropsy on day 6. The effects of standard anthelmintics on the motor activity in vitro of adult Onchocerca gutturosa, Brugia pahangi and Acanthocheilonema viteae were determined using a micromotility meter. Fresh adult males dissected from bovine tissues were the best source for observations on O. gutturosa. Parasites liber-ated by collagenase digestion showed poor viability and motility.
