The first report of the ante-mortem diagnosis of Ollulanus tricuspis infection in two dogs.

Ollulanus tricuspis is a small nematode parasite of the stomach, and its infection has been reported worldwide in cats but only one report in dogs as post-mortem diagnosis. Two dogs, kept in the Tokyo area, were presented for chronic vomiting. Chronic gastritis was diagnosed histologically, and many nematodes were detected in endoscopically-biopsied gastric samples and in the mucus of vomitus in both dogs. The parasites were small (<1 mm), and their morphological characteristics were consistent with those previously reported for O. tricuspis. The symptoms in one dog completely disappeared afte

Imported fire ant field reaction and immunotherapy safety characteristics: the IFACS study.

BACKGROUND: Imported fire ants (IFAs) are endemic in the southeastern United States, including Texas; can sting multiple times; and are a well-known cause of anaphylaxis. There are few data available on how many stings typically lead to systemic reactions (SRs). Likewise, there are no reports currently in the literature that characterize the safety of IFA subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze a case-cohort sample of patients for IFA SCIT risk factors and to characterize the index field reactions of these patients. METHODS: A case-cohort study based on a 3-year re…

Reversal sign on ante- and postmortem brain imaging in a newborn: report of one case.

A 16-day-old female newborn was admitted to the emergency department after cardiopulmonary arrest. Total-body radiographs and non-enhanced CT of the brain showed fracture of the right clavicle, pericerebral hemorrhage and brain damage with reversal sign. The infant died on the day of her hospital admission. Because child abuse was suspected, a medicolegal autopsy was ordered by the legal authorities. Prior to autopsy, total-body MRI and CT were performed. Results of the ante- and postmortem investigations were compared with each other and then with the autopsy findings. Postmortem brain imagin

Cardiodepressant and neurologic actions of Solenopsis invicta (imported fire ant) venom alkaloids.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that the alkaloid compounds that are the majority components of fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) venom are capable of producing cardiovascular and central nervous system toxic effects in mammals. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate toxic effects of synthetic S. invicta alkaloids in rodent models. METHODS: Cardiovascular effects of intravenous injection of the racemic (+/-)-cis- and trans-isomers of 2-methyl-6-nundecylpiperidine (isosolenopsin A and solenopsin A, respectively) were evaluated in anesthetized, gallamine-paralyzed rats who had received artificial ventilation and in i

Acute renal failure following Bull ant mass envenomation in two dogs.

Acute renal failure was diagnosed in a German Short Haired Pointer bitch and a Kelpie cross-bred dog following envenomation by Bull ants. Both dogs had been tethered over a Bull ant nest and had experienced mass envenomation. There was local reaction at the envenomation sites and each dog had experienced vomiting that was poorly controlled by symptomatic therapy. Intensive treatment of renal failure was successful in the German Short Haired Pointer and the bitch remains well 19 months after envenomation. The Kelpie cross-bred deteriorated despite intensive treatment and was euthanased 36 hours…

Prevalence, severity, and natural history of jack jumper ant venom allergy in Tasmania.

BACKGROUND: The jack jumper ant (Myrmecia pilosula) is responsible for greater than 90% of Australian ant venom allergy. However, deaths have only been recorded in the island of Tasmania. OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the prevalence, clinical features, natural history, and predictors of severity of M pilosula sting allergy in Tasmania. METHODS: We performed a random telephone survey supported by serum venom-specific IgE analysis, review of emergency department presentations, and follow-up of allergic volunteers. RESULTS: M pilosula, honeybee (Apis mellifera), and yellow jacket wasp (Ve

Variation in the effectiveness of biotic defence: the case of an opportunistic ant-plant protection mutualism.

Benefits to plants in facultative ant protection mutualisms are highly variable. This allows examination of the sources of this variation and the mechanisms by which ants protect plants. We studied opportunistic interactions between ants and an extrafloral nectary-bearing vine, Dioscorea praehensilis, during 3 different years. Variation in plant protection among years was striking. Several factors affected the effectiveness of the biotic defence. Stems recently emerged from the underground tuber were self-supporting, contacting no other plants and encountering few foraging ants. Stems then bec…

Cytotoxicity of pilosulin 1, a peptide from the venom of the jumper ant Myrmecia pilosula.

The synthetic peptide pilosulin 1, corresponding to the largest defined allergenic polypeptide found in the venom of the jumper ant Myrmecia pilosula, inhibited the incorporation of [methyl-3H]thymidine into proliferating Epstein-Barr transformed (EBV) B-cells. The LD50 was four-fold lower in concentration than melittin, a cytotoxic peptide found in honey bee venom. Loss of cell viability was assessed by flow cytometry by measuring the proportion of cells that fluoresced in the presence of the fluorescent dye 7-aminoactinomycin D. Examination of proliferating EBV B-cells indicated that the cel

Ante-natal testicular torsion: only one cause of the testicular regression syndrome?

It has been suggested that the most likely cause of the Testicular Regression Syndrome (TRS) is ante-natal torsion of the testis. As testicular torsion is twice as common on the left this theory cannot explain the incidence of right sided or bilateral cases. From a 5-year retrospective surgical and pathological review, we confirmed that the left testis was the most commonly affected, that boys with TRS tended to be delivered closer to term, and that frequently both testes were present at birth, but one or both subsequently vanished. We also found that direct trauma can produce histological fin

1990 South Carolina Physician Survey of tick, spider and fire ant morbidity.

A population of 2,366 primary care physicians in South Carolina was surveyed by mail to estimate the number of cases of insect morbidity treated in 1990. A response rate of 42.3 percent was obtained. Cases reported totaled 414 for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, 334 for Lyme disease, 143 black widow and 478 brown recluse spider bites and 4,975 fire ant stings. These are counts of cases from a mail survey, not from a research-based study. Five deaths were also reported; two for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, two due to black widow spider bites and one fire ant anaphylaxis.

Effects of barbital and lorazepam in the AT and ANT rats: motor performance and brain monoamine functions.

The motor impairing effects and central monoaminergic neuronal effects of barbital (120 mg/kg, IP) and lorazepam (3 mg/kg, IP) were studied in the alcohol tolerant (AT) and alcohol non-tolerant (ANT) rat lines developed for low and high sensitivity to motor impairment from ethanol (2 g/kg, IP), respectively. Like ethanol, both barbital and lorazepam impaired the performance of the ANT rats more than that of the AT rats. Ethanol increased the synthesis of catecholamines in the striatum and hypothalamus, but barbital and also lorazepam decreased it in both rat lines. Ethanol increased or did not

Glandular innovations for a tunnelling life: Silk and associated leg glands in Melissotarsus and Rhopalomastix queen and worker ants.

As in other Hymenoptera, adult ants cannot secrete silk, unlike the larvae that spin a cocoon prior to metamorphosis. Fisher and Robertson (1999) first showed the existence of a silk gland in the head of adult Melissotarsus beccarii workers, and we confirm this with detailed histology and ultrastructural comparisons of both queens and workers. This African genus exhibits extreme morphological adaptations (legs, head shape and mandibular muscles) for tunnelling behaviour inside living trees, that underlie an obligate mutualism with scale insects. Rhopalomastix is its sister genus distributed ac…

Physiological and evolutionary contexts of a new symbiotic species from the nitrogen-recycling gut community of turtle ants.

While genome sequencing has expanded our knowledge of symbiosis, role assignment within multi-species microbiomes remains challenging due to genomic redundancy and the uncertainties of in vivo impacts. We address such questions, here, for a specialized nitrogen (N) recycling microbiome of turtle ants, describing a new genus and species of gut symbiont-Ischyrobacter davidsoniae (Betaproteobacteria: Burkholderiales: Alcaligenaceae)-and its in vivo physiological context. A re-analysis of amplicon sequencing data, with precisely assigned Ischyrobacter reads, revealed a seemingly ubiquitous distrib…

Ants affect the infestation levels but not the parasitism of honeydew and non-honeydew producing pests in citrus.

Ants act simultaneously as predators and as hemipteran mutualists, and thereby may affect the composition and population dynamics of a wide arthropod community. We conducted ant-exclusion experiments in order to determine the impact of ants on the infestation levels and parasitism of three of the most important citrus pests of western Mediterranean citrus: the honeydew producer Aleurothrixus floccosus Maskell (woolly whitefly) and the non-honeydew producers Aonidiella aurantii Maskell (California red scale; CRS) and Phyllocnistis citrella (Staiton) (citrus leafminer). The study was conducted i…

Visual cue learning and odometry in guiding the search behavior of desert ants, Melophorus bagoti, in artificial channels.

Terrestrial panoramic cues, path integration and search behavior are the main navigational strategies used by ants to locate food and find their way back to the nest. Searching becomes important when the other navigational cues are either not available or cannot provide sufficient information to pinpoint the goal. When searching in one-dimensional channels Melophorus bagoti ants exhibit a systematic drift in the starting-point-to-goal direction as they turn back and forth, sometimes past the goal location (Narendra et al., 2008). Here we show that this drift in channels is not a stereotypical …

Characterization and Production of Antimicrobial Compound by Streptomyces Isolated From the Ant Polyrhachis laevissima.

Social insects such as ants, wasps, and bees have been recognized as promising sources of actinomycetes with antimicrobial potential. In a previous study, we isolated an ant-derived Streptomyces strain, LKA04, from Polyrhachis laevissima, which exhibited potent antimicrobial activity. However, the antimicrobial compound produced by this strain had not been previously characterized. Based on phenotypic and genotypic analyses, strain LKA04 was identified as Streptomyces parvulus. Bioassay-guided fractionation led to the successful isolation of the purified antimicrobial compound produced by this…
