[Racemous cysticercosis of the cauda equina and cystic arachnoiditis. Apropos of 2 cases].

Central nervous system infection by the larval form of the pork tapeworm, taenia solium is a major public health problem in view of its prevalence. The high incidence of neurocysticercosis in Reunion Island has been precised by computerized tomography and Elisa test. Spinal involvement is an uncommon form of cysticercosis, occurring with a frequency of less than 1% in large series. The types of involvement that are most common are subarachnoid cysts which appear as intradural extramedullary masses and meningeal reaction with appearance of arachnoiditis at myelography. Intramedullary involvemen…

Bacterial meningitis complicated by spinal arachnoiditis: diagnostic contribution of Tc-99m-inulin myeloscintigraphy.

Six cases of bacterial meningitis with myeloscintigraphic evidence of medullary arachnoiditis are reported. Four patients has tuberculous meningitis, another showed severe myelopathy, and the last was suspected to have hydrocephalus. Arachnoiditis is suspected when the earliest images show a sharp decrease of tracer concentration. Scintigraphy began 2 hours after lumbar injection of Tc-99m-Polyfructosan and imaging was performed at intervals of 2, 4, and 6 hours. This method has proved easy, innoculous, reproducible, and, owing to the small amount of irradiation, studies may be repeated during…

Microvascular Decompression and Arachnoid Cyst Fenestration for Treatment of Medulla Oblongata Compression Caused by Arachnoid Cyst-Vascular Loop Complex.

BACKGROUND: Vascular compression of neural structures has long been established as an etiology for dysfunction of multiple cranial nerves. Classically, as is the case of trigeminal neuralgia, vascular compression by an offending artery and sometimes vein-exerting pressure at the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve can lead to the characteristic pain syndrome. CASE DESCRIPTION: In these cases, microvascular decompression is an effective, durable surgical intervention to relieve the neuralgia. In this report, we present a unique case of a patient with direct compression of the medulla oblon

Study of Arachnoid Granulations and Their Pits in Head Injuries.

Although arachnoid granulations (AGs) and their pits have been known for over 300 years, they have not been extensively studied regarding the injuries inflicted upon them. This study aims to identify the injuries sustained by the AGs and their pits in cases involving head injuries. The study involved autopsies of 130 bodies with head injuries and 40 without head injuries. The AGs and their respective pits were examined for morphology, types, injuries, and histology. Injuries in AGs and their pits were documented in 61 cases. Intradiploic, irregular AGs, and their pits are more susceptible to i

Effect of Parenchymal Arachnoid on Brain Fluid Transport.

INTRODUCTION: The pia-arachnoid is a critical component of cerebrospinal fluid removal. It covers and invaginates into the brain parenchyma, and physiologic failure results in hydrocephalus and cerebral edema. The purpose of this study was to characterize the role of arachnoid within brain parenchyma and determine if water flux and solute transport are affected by these intra-parenchymal cells. METHODS: An immortalized arachnoid rat cell line was used to seed 300-μm organotypic rat brain slices of 4-week-old rats. Fluid and tracer transport analyses were conducted following a 7-10 day intrapa

An Unusual Case of an Intradiploic Arachnoid Cyst of the Orbit.

This study reported a case of an arachnoid cyst of the sphenoid bone causing orbital signs and symptoms in a 58-year-old man with progressive proptosis and nonspecific discomfort in the OS. Orbital MRI showed a 3-cm homogeneous cyst within the left greater wing of the sphenoid bone. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an intradiploic arachnoid cyst in the sphenoid bone with atypical radiological features, causing clinical symptoms, and managed through an eyelid approach, achieving a complete resolution with no complications.

Tinnitus Triggered by a Cerebellopontine Arachnoid Cyst in an Adolescent.

BACKGROUND Tinnitus can be a symptom of a wide range of disorders. The identification and treatment of the underlying condition is essential for management of tinnitus in children. Tinnitus can occur with medical conditions other than sensorineural hearing loss. Cerebellopontine arachnoid cysts are rare and can cause tinnitus and hearing loss in adults. Tinnitus caused by an arachnoid cyst has not been reported in an adolescent. We report clinical and radiological features of a teenager with bothersome tinnitus caused by an arachnoid cyst. CASE REPORT A 14-year-old girl with unilateral tinnitu

[Ruptured Cerebral Aneurysm Associated with Arachnoid Cyst].

Cerebral aneurysms and arachnoid cysts are relatively common cerebral malformations and the use of recent modalities has increased their detection rates. However, cerebral aneurysms associated with arachnoid cysts are unusual. We describe two cases of ruptured cerebral aneurysms associated with arachnoid cysts. According to previous reports, clinical presentation may sometimes be unusual, as cysts can prevent subarachnoid hemorrhage. Moreover, in some cases, CT may reveal typical arachnoid cysts without subarachnoid hemorrhage, without intracystic hematoma, or with subdural hematoma alone. The

Spinal Arachnoid Cysts: Presentation, management and pathophysiology.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the presentation and outcomes associated with surgical marsupialisation of spinal arachnoid cysts and formulation of a putative hypothesis explaining their pathogenesis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cases were identified from electronic and theatre records at a single centre. All patients underwent pre-operative assessment and radiographic evaluation with subsequent spinal multidisciplinary discussion. Following surgery patients were reviewed at 6, 12 weeks, 6-months and beyond. RESULTS: A total of 17 patients with dorsal thoracic arachnoid cysts with a mean age at time of

[«De novo» development of a suprasellar arachnoid cyst].

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are fluid-filled cavities that arise within the cranial arachnoid, representing approximately 1%-2% of all intracranial lesions among the paediatric population. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with instability and episodes of ocular deviation. A computed tomography scan (CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a suprasellar cyst and obstructive hydrocephalus. At birth a transfontanellar ultrasound was normal. The cyst underwent endoscopic fenestration with complete remission of symptoms. In the review of the literat

Benign enlargement of sub-arachnoid spaces in infancy.

Benign enlargement of sub-arachnoid spaces (BESS) is one of the causes of macrocephaly in infants. It is a self-limiting condition and does not require any active medical or surgical treatment. We report a case of an infant aged 4 months who was referred for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain as the head circumference of the infant had increased rapidly from the 50(th) percentile in the 3(rd) month to more than the 95(th) percentile in the 4(th) month of age. MRI revealed enlarged anterior sub-arachnoid spaces and mild prominence of all the ventricles. A possibility of BESS was susp

Endoscopic treatment of quadrigeminal arachnoid cysts in children.

OBJECT: Quadrigeminal arachnoid cysts (QACs) are rare, comprising approximately 5%-10% of all intracranial arachnoid cysts. The management of these cysts is challenging, and their optimal surgical treatment is controversial. This study evaluates the role of endoscopy in the treatment of QACs in children, focusing on some factors or technical aspects that might influence the outcome. METHODS: Eighteen children with symptomatic QACs were the subject of this study. The group included 10 boys and 8 girls, with a mean age of 2.5 years. All patients had hydrocephalus. Surgical treatment included ve

Intracranial arachnoid cysts in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

An intracranial arachnoid cyst was detected in a 32-year-old, 44.6-kg, female chimpanzee at the Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) were performed and the cognitive studies in which she participated were reviewed. MRI revealed that the cyst was present in the chimpanzee's right occipital convexity, and was located in close proximity to the posterior horn of the right lateral ventricle without ventriculomegaly. CT confirmed the presence of the cyst and no apparent signs indicating previous skull fractures were found. The th

Intracranial arachnoid cyst; an unusual cause of epiphora.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of unilateral intracranial arachnoid cyst in association with enophthalmos and epiphora on the same side. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A young man with symptoms of unilateral epiphora is described. He had a large intracranial arachnoid cyst with an unusually large orbit leading to enophthalmos and symptomatic epiphora on that side. Radiological features of the orbit and associated pneumosinus dilatants are described. We also offer hypotheses to describe the paradoxical occurrence of an expanding intracranial mass and inward growth of the orbit and paranasal sinu
