Entangled-photon decision maker.

The competitive multi-armed bandit (CMAB) problem is related to social issues such as maximizing total social benefits while preserving equality among individuals by overcoming conflicts between individual decisions, which could seriously decrease social benefits. The study described herein provides experimental evidence that entangled photons physically resolve the CMAB in the 2-arms 2-players case, maximizing the social rewards while ensuring equality. Moreover, we demonstrated that deception, or outperforming the other player by receiving a greater reward, cannot be accomplished in a polari

Unmasking the predicament of cultural voyeurism: a postcolonial analysis of international nursing placements.

The growing interest in international nursing placements cannot be left unnoticed. After 11 years into this twenty-first century, violations of human rights and freedom of speech, environmental disasters, and armed conflicts still create dire living conditions for men and women around the world. Nurses have an ethical duty to address issues of social justice and global health as a means to fulfil nursing's social mandate. However, international placements raise some concerns. Drawing on the works of postcolonial theorists in nursing and social sciences, we examine the risk of replicating colon…

Conflict zone medical evacuations catalyzing antimicrobial resistance spread and threatening regional health: A retrospective comparative observational study.

BACKGROUND: The interplay between armed conflict and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses significant public health challenges. In Ukraine, conflict-related factors such as medical evacuations, destruction of infrastructure, and displacement have exacerbated the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms, amplifying AMR risks within and beyond national borders. METHODS: This retrospective comparative observational study was conducted at the First Lviv Territorial Medical Union, Western Ukraine's largest health care union. Clinically relevant diagnostic isolates were collected from May 2023 to Ap

[Blood transfusion at the stages of evacuation of the wounded in military conflicts of the XIX century].

During the 19th century, the scope of blood transfusion was significantly expanded. Along with obstetric practice, hemotransfusion has been actively used in the fight against acute blood loss in combat and traumatic injuries. New broad opportunities for the development of the method were obtained during numerous military campaigns of the XIX century, accompanied by an increase in the destructive power of firearms and the number of wounded who died from acute massive bleeding on the battlefield. The article examines how high hopes for the introduction of blood transfusion among the means of hel

Evidence of reduced birthweight in Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

The impact of armed conflict on birth weight has been shown in various studies, but the effects of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have been overlooked until now. This study investigates the influence of war on birth-weight using data and follow-up of pregnancies among women having prenatal screening. Maternal factors, outcomes, and birth weights were analyzed for 706 screened women who delivered between 2020 and 2023, excluding cases of spontaneous abortion, termination, and multiple pregnancies. Of these, 330 deliveries occurred before the invasion and 376 afterward. The o

Psychological Resilience of Mental Health Workers During the Russia-Ukraine War: Implications for Clinical Interventions.

Objective: To examine the prevalence and key correlates of psychological resilience in Ukrainian mental health workers (MHWs), using a novel discrepancy-based psychiatric resilience (DBPR) analytic approach. Methods: A total of 178 Ukrainian MHWs, recruited via convenience sampling from July to August 2023, completed a survey assessing their war-related exposures, occupational stress, and mental health symptoms and sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics. DBPR scores were computed by regressing composite distress scores onto measures of war- and work-related stressors. Psychological

The Impact of Different Types of Violence on Ebola Virus Transmission During the 2018-2020 Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Our understanding of the different effects of targeted versus nontargeted violence on Ebola virus (EBOV) transmission in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is limited. METHODS: We used time-series data of case counts to compare individuals in Ebola-affected health zones in DRC, April 2018-August 2019. Exposure was number of violent events per health zone, categorized into Ebola-targeted or Ebola-untargeted, and into civilian-induced, (para)military/political, or protests. Outcome was estimated daily reproduction number (Rt) by health zone. We fit linear time-series regression

A decade of aid coordination in post-conflict Burundi's health sector.

BACKGROUND: The launch of Global Health Initiatives in early 2000' coincided with the end of the war in Burundi. The first large amount of funding the country received was ear-marked for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and immunization programs. Thereafter, when at global level aid effectiveness increasingly gained attention, coordination mechanisms started to be implemented at national level. METHODS: This in-depth case study provides a description of stakeholders at national level, operating in the health sector from early 2000' onwards, and an analysis of coordination mechanisms and sta

From coping to structural abandonment: Reframing self-medication in Yemen's protracted conflict.

The protracted conflict in Yemen has led to profound disruptions in the health system, fundamentally reshaping patterns of healthcare access and utilization. This commentary engages with a recent study that conceptualizes self-medication and informal antibiotic use as forms of coping and agency in constrained settings, and re-examines this interpretation within the context of systemic collapse. Drawing on a structural perspective, the analysis argues that self-directed care practices in Yemen are not temporary responses to episodic constraints but are embedded within enduring structural condit

Genomic insights into the persistence of Nubian giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis) in conflict-affected South Sudan.

Armed conflicts can severely disrupt wildlife conservation and management, yet their long-term genomic consequences remain poorly understood. South Sudan has experienced decades of conflict that have limited conservation efforts and prevented genomic assessment of its fauna, including the endangered subspecies of Nubian giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis camelopardalis). Due to long-standing logistical and political challenges, populations from South Sudan have remained largely unsampled. The Nubian giraffe represents a critical conservation unit and new sampling efforts provide an opportunity to…

The Impact of Conflict on Maternal and Child Health Services: A Scoping Review.

Conflicts are unavoidable aspect of human existence, causing disruptions in livelihoods, infrastructure, socioeconomic systems and healthcare access. Among the most severe effects of conflict are those on maternal and child health (MCH) services, on which there is a notable scarcity of research. Consequently, this scoping review examines the impact of conflict on the accessibility of MCH services and their associated treatment outcomes and identifies limitations. A review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping R

Systemic barriers to rare disease management in conflict zones: insights from a refugee with sturge-weber syndrome in Sudan.

Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS), is a rare neuro-oculo-cutaneous disorder that presents unique diagnostic and management challenges, particularly in resource-limited settings. This editorial reflects on a recent case of an undiagnosed SWS in an Ethiopian refugee patient in Sudan, highlighting systemic barriers to healthcare access during a time of war and the importance of clinical vigilance. We advocate for local and global initiatives to further enhance diagnostic capabilities, develop integrated care systems in recognition and management of such a rare and complex condition.

Civilians under missile attack: post-traumatic stress disorder among the Jewish and Bedouin population of Southern Israel.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, Jewish and Bedouin civilians in southern Israel have faced the ongoing threat of missile attacks from Gaza, with possible mental health consequences. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Jewish and Bedouin adult civilians in southern Israel in a period with few missile attacks from Gaza, and no military operations. METHODS: The study population included 389 participants (246 Jews, 143 Bedouins) living within 40 km/25 mi from Gaza for at least 2 years and interviewed between January and March 2023 (before t

Similar health emergencies, different commitments: Comparative strategies to end Ebola and COVID-19 in "post-conflict" Liberia.

Liberia, in the face of two consecutive health emergencies - the Ebola epidemic in 2014 and COVID in 2019 - offers a unique, comparative perspective on health crisis management within a fractured healthcare system. In dialogue with a feminist-informed political economy of health in the African context, this paper has two central objectives. First, it examines the strategies employed by community-based women's organisations - many of whom remain invested in peacebuilding after a 14-year civil war (1989-2003)) - to contain the Ebola and COVID-19 disease outbreaks. Second, it explores the impleme

Surveillance of bacterial disease in wartime Ukraine.

This analysis considers circulation of bacterial disease in wartime Ukraine. Anthrax, brucellosis, botulism and tularaemia are all naturally occurring in the country. The causative agents of these diseases also formed components of the biological weapons programme the Russian Federation inherited from the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. Differentiating between natural and unnatural outbreaks of disease in Ukraine is essential for combating disinformation and maintaining health security as the war intensifies.
