Apraxia of speech with phonological alexia and agraphia following resection of the left middle precentral gyrus: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Apraxia of speech is a disorder of speech-motor planning in which articulation is effortful and error-prone despite normal strength of the articulators. Phonological alexia and agraphia are disorders of reading and writing disproportionately affecting unfamiliar words. These disorders are almost always accompanied by aphasia. OBSERVATIONS: A 36-year-old woman underwent resection of a grade IV astrocytoma based in the left middle precentral gyrus, including a cortical site associated with speech arrest during electrocortical stimulation mapping. Following surgery, she exhibited mod

Efficacy of Infants Release of Ankyloglossia on Speech Articulation: A Randomized Trial.

PURPOSE: The relationship between ankyloglossia and speech is controversial. Our objective in the present study was to determine the most appropriate intervention and optimal timing for infants with speech articulation caused by ankyloglossia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 341 pediatric patients (aged 2 to 5 years) being referred for speech concerns due to ankyloglossia were enrolled in a randomized trial and assigned to either a surgical intervention (N = 166) or a no surgical intervention (N = 175) group. Subsequently, patients were further categorized into 3 groups according to age: 2 t

[Prevalence of malocclusion and its association with functional alterations of the stomatognathic system in schoolchildren].

The aim of this research was to estimate the prevalence of malocclusion among 12-year-old schoolchildren in Camaragibe, Pernambuco State, Brazil. Malocclusions were stratified by the degree of severity, and their association with alterations of the following functions was also analyzed: speech articulation, respiration, and deglutition. Occlusion was assessed by means of the Treatment Priority Index (TPI) and the functions referred to by means of the criteria used in routine clinical speech therapy by a single calibrated examiner (kappa values ranging from 0.64 to 1.00). Schoolchildren were se

A meme's eye view of speech-language pathology.

In this article, the reason why certain terms, labels, and ideas prevail, whereas others fail to gain acceptance, will be considered. Borrowing the concept of "meme" from the study of evolution of ideas, it will be clear why language-based and phonological disorders have less widespread appeal than, for example, auditory processing and sensory integration disorders. Discussion will also center on why most speech-language pathologists refer to themselves as speech therapists or speech pathologists, and why it is more desirable to have dyslexia than to have a reading disability. In a meme's eye

Comparing tongue positioning by normal-hearing and hearing-impaired children during vowel production.

Glossometric measures of tongue positions of 10 normal-hearing (NH) and 10 profoundly hearing-impaired (HI) children were compared during production of the eight vowels /i,I,E,ae,u,U,o,a/. The NH subjects used tongue positions with distinct vertical distances from the hard palate and discrete tongue shapes to distinguish the front vowels and the back vowels. The HI subjects produced vowels using a reduced vertical range and singular flat, high-back tongue shape. Token-to-token variability was greater for the HI subjects. Listener identifications of the vowels produced by the HI subjects fell i

Examining Risk of Speech-Language Disorders in Children With Cleft Lip.

Although it is well-established that children with cleft palate are at high risk for communication disorders, little is known about the speech-language profiles of children with cleft lip (with or without cleft alveolus), who do not have an overt cleft palate. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of speech-language disorders in a consecutively evaluated group of children with cleft lip, with or without cleft alveolus (CL ± A) from a single cleft lip and palate center in the United States. We also explored the types of speech and language disorders in this cohort and examin

Foreign accent syndrome as a developmental motor speech disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS) is a relatively rare motor speech disorder in which the pronunciation of a patient is perceived by listeners of the same language community as distinctly foreign. FAS has been well documented in adult patients with etiologically heterogeneous, though mostly vascular brain lesions affecting the motor speech network of the language dominant hemisphere. In addition, reports exist of adult patients in whom FAS was due to a psychiatric illness. Although FAS has been reported in children, such accounts are rare and have remained largely anecdotal in that t

Imaging of the patellofemoral joint.

The patellofemoral (PF) joint is a complex articulation, with interplay between the osseous and soft tissue structures to maintain the balance between knee mobility and stability. Disorders of the PF joint can be a source of anterior knee pain (AKP). In this article, radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging of the PF joint are reviewed, including normal anatomy, imaging techniques, and imaging-based measurements. Common imaging findings associated with AKP are reviewed, including symptomatic normal variants, tendinopathy, apophysitis, osteoarthritis, chondromalacia patella, trochlear dyspla

Pure apraxia of speech - a case report -.

Apraxia of speech (AOS) is the impairment of motor programming. However, the exact nature of this deficit remains unclear. In particular, AOS without other speech-language deficit is called pure AOS, but it is very rare. When diagnosing AOS, the characteristic of articulation is considered a crucial criterion, which has been proposed for differentiating AOS from phonological and dysarthric disorders. The present study reports on pure AOS in a 37-year-old right-handed male after a left insular, front, temporal infarction. This report may be useful for further AOS study and diagnosis in the clin

Spondyloarthropathy in progressive ankylosis (ank/ank) mice: morphological features.

Progressive ankylosis mice rapidly develop an ankylosing spondyloarthropathy that rapidly affects all of the articulations of the vertebral column. The disorder symmetrically affects the nonsynovial synchondroses and symphyses of the intervertebral spaces, the diarthrodial synovial apophyseal and costovertebral joints, and the sacroiliac joint. These joints present a clear progression from syndesmophyte formation through joint bridging to total fusion. The similarities and differences of the disorder identified in this mouse and human spondyloarthropathies are discussed.

EPG research and therapy: further developments.

Electropalatography (EPG) has been used in the past 50 years for studying the patterns of contact between the tongue and the palate during speech production in typical speakers and those with speech disorders due to different causes. At the 7th EPG Symposium in Japan that was held online on 24 January 2021 (see: https://epg-research.sakura.ne.jp/), a panel of invited experts discussed their views regarding further developments and application of the technique. This paper provides a summary of this discussion. EPG offers information on articulation which cannot be replaced by other instrumental

[A visual model of articulation].

Speech disorders become more and more important in clinical area of phoniatrics. It is striking during consultation and treatment of patients that there exist only humble concrete notions concerning speech organs and articulatory movements. Using the computational model introduced here speech organs and speech movements of unrestricted utterances can be displayed in the mediosagittal plane. Articulation is described concisely by using nine basic parameters. The time pattern of these parameter-values defines the articulatory motion plan of an utterance and gives a comprehensive overview of the

Associations between early motor milestones and speech-language abilities in 4 to 6-year-old children with DLD.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects speech and language abilities. However, studies have shown that this disorder is widely connected to other aspects of development. We conducted an observational study on the relationship between early motor milestones and speech-language development in 4 to 6-year-old children with DLD. We studied 30 children diagnosed with DLD and 30 typically developed children. To assess early motor milestones, parents provided written responses regarding their children's age at which they reached crawling and walking milest

Evaluating Effectiveness of Articulation Practice with Tongue-twister Movement Distance Using Ultrasound.

Deterioration of oral function can impair articulation, making it essential to evaluate tongue movement during articulation training. Previous reports have indicated an improvement in motor speech disorders, such as glossectomy-related glide issues, through rapid speech exercises, suggesting the potential benefits of non-invasive training. This study aimed to investigate the effect of tongue training on oral function using tongue twisters in healthy Japanese-speaking women. The participants performed tongue twisters designed to engage both the tongue tip and root, with data collected at baseli

Exploring the phonological profiles of children with reading difficulties: A multiple case study.

Studies of group differences have established that the phonological profiles of people with reading difficulties contain both strengths and weaknesses. The current study extends this work by exploring individual differences in phonological ability using a multiple case study approach. A heterogeneous sample of 56 children (M age = 9 years) with reading difficulties completed a battery of tasks measuring literacy, phonological processing, expressive vocabulary and general ability. The phonological tasks included measures of phonological awareness (PA), phonological memory (PM), and rapid naming

Multiple phonetically trained-listener comparisons of speech before and after articulatory intervention in two children with repaired submucous cleft palate.

Cleft Palate (CP) assessments based on phonetic transcription are the "gold standard" therapy outcome measure, despite reliability difficulties. Here we propose a novel perceptual evaluation, applied to ultrasound-visual biofeedback (U-VBF) therapy and therapy using visual articulatory models (VAMs) for two children with repaired submucous CP. Three comparisons were made: post VAM, post U-VBF and overall pre- and post-therapy. Twenty-two phonetically-trained listeners were asked to determine whether pre- or post-therapy recordings sounded "closer to the English target", using their own implici

International aspirations for speech-language pathologists' practice with multilingual children with speech sound disorders: development of a position paper.

UNLABELLED: A major challenge for the speech-language pathology profession in many cultures is to address the mismatch between the "linguistic homogeneity of the speech-language pathology profession and the linguistic diversity of its clientele" (Caesar & Kohler, 2007, p. 198). This paper outlines the development of the Multilingual Children with Speech Sound Disorders: Position Paper created to guide speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') facilitation of multilingual children's speech. An international expert panel was assembled comprising 57 researchers (SLPs, linguists, phoneticians, and spe
