PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of topically administered ascorbic acid on experimentally induced corneal neovascularization in the rat model.

Oxyhemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) produced a concentration-dependent contraction of monkey, dog, and bovine cerebral artery strips. Treatment of Oxy-Hb with ascorbic acid suppressed the ability of Oxy-Hb to contract the arteries, especially in the monkey arteries. The effects of ascorbate deficiency on carnitine biosynthesis was investigated in young male guinea pigs. Liver and kidney carnitine levels were not affected by the deficiency, but scorbutic animals had 50% less carnitine in heart and skeletal muscle than control animals. Plasma ascorbic acid (PAA) in normal Labrador Retriever dogs less than one year of age averaged 1.22 +/- 0.05 mg/dl (x +/- sem) and was significantly higher than the value of 0.89 +/- 0.03, for Labrador Retrievers two years of age and older. Weanling rats were fed diets with and without the addition of retinyl palmitate at 6,500 units/kg. The supplemented groups were fed either ad libitum or food was restricted daily to that amount consumed by the group of rats receiving the unsupplemented diet. After a 10 week experimental period, signs of vitamin A deficiency were observed (growth plateau, xerophthalmia) and liver values as retinol were only 1% of control values. Two hundred and eighty-eight samples of patients with nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and prostatitis were detected by cell culture and immunofluorescence assay for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and the effects of ascorbic acid(vitC) on the formation rate of inclusion of CT in positive samples were also studied.
