Osteogenic Disorder Shionogi (ODS) rats, which cannot synthesize ascorbic acid due to a deficiency of L-gulonolactone oxidase, become scorbu … -P-2) was higher in scorbutic ODS rats by the Ames test. These results indicate that the effects of ascorbic acid deficiency on the expression of cytochrome P450 in ODS rat livers are form-specific and that the increased CYP1A2 is associated with increased metabolic activation of promutagens in the scorbutic state.

Protection against the toxic effects of chronic alcohol consumption was observed in male guinea pigs maintained on a high-ascorbic-acid diet (vitamin C-deficient chow plus 2.0 mg ascorbic acid/ml drinking water) as compared to animals on a low-ascorbic-acid diet (vitamin C-deficient chow and from 0.025 to 0.050 mg ascorbic acid/ml drinking water). Alcohol was orally administered to the guinea pigs at a dose of 2.5 g/kg for up to 14 weeks. Levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase and serum alanine aminotransferase were significantly elevated in animals on the low-ascorbic-acid diet that recei

The study deals with investigations on anaemia due to iron or protein calorie deficiency and that associating acute glomerulonephritis, nephrosis and schistosoma haematobium. The rate of intestinal iron absorption using an oral dose of ferrous sulphate equivalent to 4 mg clemental iron/kg body weight was studied. The supplementing action of ascorbic acid in iron absorption in these cases was also investigated. The rate of intestinal iron absorption was enhanced in pure iron deficiency anaemia, acute glomerulonephritis and schistosoma haematobium, retarded in kwashiorkor, marasmus and nephrosis

Previous studies have indicated that systemic deficiency in one of the critical antioxidants, ascorbate, does not significantly exacerbate ozone-induced lung injury and changes in lung antioxidants following longer-term exposure. Because alveolar cells encounter the highest ozone dose upon exposure and lack direct blood supply, systemic ascorbate deficiency may exacerbate ozone response on antioxidants within these cells. Female Hartley guinea pigs (30 days old) were fed either a regular guinea pig chow or chow that lacked ascorbate. The dietary regimen was started 1 week prior to exposure, co

Recent research studies have shown that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may affect bone mineral density and that a deficiency of ascorbic acid leads to the development of osteoporosis. Patients suffering from an inflammatory bowel disease are at a risk of low bone mineral density. It is vital to notice that patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis also are at risk of vitamin C deficiency which is due to factors such as reduced consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits, i.e., the main sources of ascorbic acid. Additionally, some patients follow diets which may provide an insufficient amo

The vitamin C status of 186 elderly subjects living at home and institutionalised in hospital, residential accommodation and sheltered dwelling was studied. Subjects from hospital and home receiving multivitamin supplements regularly were grouped separately. Ascorbic acid deficiency (plasma ascorbic acid less than or equal to 0.3 mg/100 ml) was noted in 47.2, 39.0, 46.2 and 47.4 per cent subjects of home, hospital, residential accommodation and sheltered dwelling, respectively. All subjects receiving multi-vitamin had plasma ascorbic acid (PAA) levels greater than or equal to 0.3 mg/100 ml. Th…

Recommended daily allowances, U.S.A., for ascorbic acid are several times the minimum daily requirement of about 10 mg to prevent clinical symptoms in adults. The recommended daily allowances reflect the levels of ascorbic acid required to produce tissue saturation in human beings, so that higher doses are promptly excreted in the urine. In various investigations, responses to ascorbic acid were not obtained under conditions where the intake was considerably lower than the recommended daily allowances, but higher than the level needed to prevent clinical symptoms of ascorbic acid deficiency. T…

The sulfation of ascorbic acid by an ascorbic acid sulphotransferase was investigated using rat liver and colon homogenates. When Na2 35 SO4 or 3'-phosphoadenylyl [35S]sulfate (P-Ado-P-35S) and ascorbic acid were used as substrates, chromatographic behavior of the reaction products on thin-layer cellulose suggested that ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulfate was formed. With Na2 35SO4 as the source of radioactive sulfate in the assay system, ATP was found to be an obligatory cofactor. Incorporation of [35S]sulfate frofrom Na2 35SO4 into ascorbic acid 2-[35S]sulfate was also decreased when ATP sulfurylas

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) has major effects on the intestinal uptake and utilisation of Fe in humans. The objective of the present study was to investigate the impact of Fe on the acquisition of ascorbic acid. The strategy was to study the cellular uptake and transport of ascorbic acid in the presence of Fe and also to observe the expression of the Na-dependent vitamin C transporter 1 (SVCT1) protein in human intestinal Caco-2 cells. SVCT1 is involved in the cellular uptake of ascorbic acid and is therefore a candidate for playing a role in the regulation of Fe utilisation. Caco-2 cells were c

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether or not dogs develop a deficiency of ascorbic acid during hospitalisation in an intensive care unit.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected daily for up to three days from dogs hospitalised in an intensive care unit for 36 to 72 hours (n = 16) or ê72 hours (n = 20) and from healthy dogs (n = 13). Plasma total ascorbic acid concentrations were measured using a colorimetric method involving a reaction between ascorbic acid, 2,6 dichlorophenol-indophenol, thiourea and dinitrophenyl hydrazine. Additionally, clinical data were recorded for each patient.
RESULTS: Dogs

There is increasing evidence that the liver microsomal drug metabolizing system is affected by various vitamins such as ascorbic acid, riboflavin, and alpha-tocopherol. In regard to ascorbic acid deficiency there is a decrease in the quantity of hepatic microsomal electron transport components such as cytochrome P-450 and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase, as well as decreases in a variety of drug enzyme reactions such as N-demethylation, O-demethylation, and steroid hydroxylation. In addition, young animals given high supplements of vitamin C have increased quantities of electron transport com…

Pigs with hereditary ascorbate deficiency (OD pigs) were depleted of, or supplemented with, ascorbic acid by respective diets. Depletion of young (i.e. 5-7 weeks old) animals for at least three weeks had a negative effect on growth, body temperature and levels of bone alkaline phosphatase and induced symptoms of scurvy. Doses of 5 mg ascorbic acid kg-1 body weight day-1 were sufficient to reverse these effects. The level of ascorbic acid sharply decreased in plasma within one week of depletion, whereas in leukocytes it declined more slowly and to a lower extent. Bone alkaline phosphatase level

Experiments were conducted to determine the nature of the effect of dietary ascorbic acid on selenium nutrition in the chick. Results showed that ascorbic acid resulted in increased activities of the selenium-containing enzyme glutathione peroxidase in plasma, accompanied by an apparent reduction in the dietary selenium requirement of the vitamin E-deficient chick. The ascorbic acid contents of plasma, liver, kidney and adrenals were not affected by selenium or vitamin E deficiencies, indicating that selenium-vitamin E deficient chicks are not rendered scrobutic. Ascorbic acid is also popularly known as vitamin C or ascorbate. It is a water-soluble vitamin. Ascorbic acid is necessary for bone formation, wound healing, connective tissue growth, and the maintenance of healthy gum tissue. Antioxidants like ascorbic acid shield the body from free radical damage. In many illnesses and conditions, vitamin C is employed as a medicinal agent. It improves the immunity of the body, reduces the severity of allergies, and aids in the management of infectious disorders. Additionally, ascorbic acid has health benefits for conditions including atherosclerosis, cancer

The incidental discovery of scurvy in a patient with a symptomatic hiatal hernia has led to the identification of 9 other individuals with chemically proved vitamin C deficiency secondary to an expressed aversion to "acid" food in any form. These patients were screened with capillary fragility tests and serum ascorbic acid determinations from approximately 200 hiatal hernia and reflux patients. With resumption of a normal vitamin C intake, scattered deficiency symptoms disappeared and both capillary fragility tests and serum ascorbic acid levels returned toward normal. There were no wound heal
