This report describes three women with hyperemesis gravidarum caused by previously undiagnosed thyrotoxicosis. All three women were eight weeks pregnant and only one woman had typical features of thyrotoxicosis. Hyperemesis could not be controlled by anti-emetics. The patients were successfully treated with antithyroid drugs. Anti-thyroid treatment does not need to be continued once resolution of symptoms and thyrotoxicosis have occurred.

Over a 10-year period, we reviewed 30 patients with leukodystrophy, megalencephaly, and a relatively benign course. Most of these patients (26) belonged to a distinctive ethnic group called the Agrawals. Head circumference exceeded the 95th percentile in 28 patients; 22 patients had seizures; 22 had pyramidal signs (16 more pronounced and 6 mild); and 16 had cerebellar ataxia. The median age of onset of symptoms was 1.8 years. Interictal electroencephalogram (EEG) was abnormal in 21 of 23 patients. The inheritance is possibly autosomal recessive.

Haemoglobin disorders were studied among Southeast-Asian refugees (Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians). Phenotypic haemoglobin investigations and genotypical studies concerning the alpha loci were carried out. Most of the observed cases of microcytosis were related to a thalassaemic defect. High prevalence of Hb E and alpha-thalassaemia were found.

A large fraction of people in East Asia are incapable of digesting alcohol because of a genetic deficiency. This study examines whether the variation in alcohol tolerance contributes to inequality in the labor market. We conduct our original surveys in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea with the measurement of respondents' degree of alcohol tolerance by a bio-marker test. We find that alcohol-tolerant men consume significantly more alcohol, but their earnings and hours worked do not differ from those of alcohol-intolerant men. Prediction of the South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) has remained a challenge for both scientific research and operational climate prediction for decades. By identifying two dominant modes of the SASM, here we show that the unsatisfactory prediction may be due to the fact that the existing SASM indices are mostly related to the less predictable second mode.
