The volleyball athlete's shoulder: biomechanical adaptations and injury associations.

In volleyball, the dominant shoulder of the athlete undergoes biomechanical and morphological adaptations; however, definitive conclusions about their exact nature, aetiology, purpose and associations with shoulder injury have not been reached. We present a systematic review of the existing literature describing biomechanical adaptations in the dominant shoulders of volleyball players and factors that may predispose to shoulder pain/injury. A thorough literature search via Medline, EMBASE and SCOPUS was conducted for original studies of volleyball players and 15 eligible articles were identifi

Heat- and cold-induced injuries in athletes: evaluation and management.

Both extreme heat and cold can be challenging for athletes during training and competition. One role of the team physician is to educate coaches and athletes on the risks of exposure to these conditions and how to best prevent and manage their adverse effects. Heat illness varies in degree from mild to severe, with the most severe forms being potentially fatal. Cold exposure can result in systemic effects and peripheral injury to the extremities.

Evaluation of artificial sweat in athletes with spinal cord injuries.

Athletes with spinal cord injury often experience high heat storage due to reduced sweating capacity below the spinal injury. Spray bottle (SB) may be used to apply mist for evaporative cooling during breaks in competitions. This study examined the efficacy of SB during rest breaks. Seven participants, four female and three males, (mean +/- SD age 24 +/- 4.1 year, weight 56.2 +/- 7.0 kg, upper-body VO(2) peak 2.4 +/- 0.6 l/min) volunteered for the study. Participants were paraplegic athletes (T3-T12/L1) with both complete and incomplete lesions. Participants arm-cranked using a ramp protocol i

Management of unstable ankle fractures and syndesmosis injuries in athletes.

Athletes with unstable ankle injuries treated with rigid and anatomic internal fixation with concomitant repair of indicated ligaments followed by an accelerated rehabilitation program consisting of early weight bearing and near-immediate range of motion (ROM) can obtain excellent outcomes. Early ROM and weight bearing, if indicated depending on the specific injury pattern, can be effective with low morbidity. Return to sports can be expected as early as 4 weeks after rigid fixation of an isolated fibula fracture and up to 8 to 10 weeks after stabilization of a bimalleolar equivalent fracture

Common injuries of the foot and ankle in the child and adolescent athlete.

A myriad problems in the foot and ankle are specific to child and adolescent athletes. The anatomy of young athletes with respect to the presence of a growth plate makes their injury patterns different from those seen in adults. The main general injury patterns seen in the feet and ankles of children are related to growth and development or occur from overuse syndromes or acute trauma. In this article we outline in an anatomically oriented manner most of the common problems in this population.

Physiology of wheelchair racing in athletes with spinal cord injury.

Wheelchair racing is one of the most popular sporting activities of individuals with spinal cord injury. Athletes with this impairment have unique changes in metabolic, cardiorespiratory, neuromuscular and thermoregulatory systems, which reduce their overall physiological capacity compared with able-bodied individuals or individuals with other types of impairments. This review on spinal cord injury: presents the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation classification of wheelchair athletes; describes methods commonly used to characterise anaerobic and aerobic fitness; presents the findi

Shoulder injuries in overhead athletes. The "dead arm" revisited.

The following statements summarize this article: Three distinct categories of Type 2 SLAP lesions exist: (1) anterior, (2) posterior, and (3) combined anteroposterior. Posterior Type 2 SLAP lesions have distinct clinical and anatomic features that distinguish them from anterior Type 2 SLAP lesions. Posterior and combined Type 2 SLAP lesions can be disabling to overhead-throwing athletes because of posterosuperior instability and anteroinferior pseudolaxity. The Jobe relocation test is positive with posterosuperior pain in patients with posterior or combined anterior-posterior Type 2 SLAP lesio

Chronic groin injuries in athletes. Recommendations for treatment and rehabilitation.

Chronic muscle and tendon injuries to the groin are common sports injuries. The symptoms of groin injuries are often uncharacteristic which can result in a delay in the correct and specific diagnosis being reached. The most common injury is the overuse strain resulting in chronic tendinitis of the adductor muscle/tendon units, especially the adductor longus. The rectus femoris and rectus abdominous muscles and tendons are also commonly affected. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography have been widely adopted to diagnose muscle/tendon injuries to the groin. Ultrason

Biomechanical aspects of lumbar spine injuries in athletes: a review.

One of the areas of the body which is very often injured by athletes is the lower lack, or the lumbar area of the spine. This problem is of some concern to physical educators, athletic therapists, coaches, athletes, and physicians. The type of injury which occurs in the lumbar spine is dependent on the direction, magnitude, and the point of application of the forces to the spine. This part of the body is susceptible to injury due to the large forces which must be supported, which include the body weight and any external weights, as well as the forces due to very high accelerations of the body

Susceptibility of women athletes to injury. Myths vs reality.

To separate fact from fiction regarding the susceptibility of women athletes to injury, three surveys were conducted. The initial data were collected from the athletic departments of collegiate institutions, and the final material was assembled from certified athletic trainers at these institutions, plus an extensive computer search of applicable publications. The collected statistical data were tabulated, and a written commentary was evaluated by the authors. It was established that injuries sustained by female athletes, aside from those related to different biological structures, were essent

Chronic Overuse Injuries in Young Athletes-Upper Extremity.

Young athletes are uniquely susceptible to overuse injuries of the upper extremity because their open physes and apophyses are structurally weaker than adjacent bone, ligament, and tendon. Repetitive sport-specific loading-torsional stress in throwers, axial compression in gymnasts and climbers-can outpace the repair capacity of growing tissues, producing a spectrum of physeal and apophyseal stress injuries from widening and sclerosis to frank epiphysiolysis. This review examines the mechanisms, clinical presentation, and imaging findings of chronic overuse injuries at key upper extremity site

Trending Pediatric Injuries in the Overhead Athlete: A Narrative Review.

Pediatric overhead athlete injuries are increasing in frequency, many of them unique to the youth musculoskeletal system. Conditions relate not only to growth centers but also to subchondral bone and joint instability linked to immature connective tissue. Diagnosis depends on a thorough patient history, correct examination techniques, and use of imaging. Management of these patients requires a greater focus on neuromuscular rehabilitation principles than is needed for adults. There is a lack of consensus on the role of functional testing in rehabilitation decisions, and further investigation i

International Delphi consensus on bone stress injuries in athletes.

Bone stress injuries, commonly referred to as stress reactions and stress fractures, represent overuse injuries to bone. These injuries result in physical limitations in activity and can be career-ending for high-level athletes. While bone stress injuries have received increased attention in recent years, international consensus is lacking on definitions, risk factors and strategies for management and prevention. This study aimed to ascertain and improve the level of agreement on bone stress injuries by utilising a three-part modified Delphi approach on (1) pathophysiology, diagnosis, terminol
