[Is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder associated with other prevalent pathologies of early childhood?].

AIM: To determine whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with other prevalent medical pathologies of the paediatric age. DEVELOPMENT: Several paediatric pathologies were selected with the aim of reviewing their association with ADHD: in paediatric pulmonology, asthma and other allergic processes; in paediatric neurology, headache and febrile seizures; in paediatric gastroenterology, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, gastroesophageal reflux and infection by Helicobacter pylori; in paediatric nephrology, enuresis; in paediatric cardiology, bruits and congen

Feedback-related negativity in children with two subtypes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The current model of ADHD suggests abnormal reward and punishment sensitivity, although differences in ADHD subgroups are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of feedback valence (reward or punishment) and punishment magnitude (small or large) on Feedback-Related Negativity (FRN) and Late Positive Potential (LPP) in two subtypes of ADHD (ADHD-C and ADHD-I) compared to typically developing children (TD) during a children's gambling task. METHODS: Children with ADHD-C (n = 16), children with ADHD-I (n = 15) and typically developing children (n = 15) performed a childre

Methylphenidate treatment in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and comorbid social phobia.

The aim of this study was to assess the response of social phobia (SP) symptoms to methylphenidate (MPH) treatment in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-one ADHD patients with SP, aged between 8 and 18 years, received 12 weeks of MPH treatment. The severity of SP symptoms were assessed by the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents (LSAS-CA), and the severity of ADHD symptoms was assessed by the ADHD Rating Scale at baseline and at endpoint. MPH treatment was associated with a significant decrease in the ADHD Rating Scale scores (P<0.0001)

Probabilistic reward learning in adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder--an electrophysiological study.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is hypothesized to be characterized by altered reinforcement sensitivity. The main aim of the present study was to assess alterations in the electrophysiological correlates of monetary reward processing in adult patients with ADHD of the combined subtype. Fourteen adults with ADHD of the combined subtype and 14 healthy control participants performed an active and an observational probabilistic reward-based learning task while an electroencephalogramm (EEG) was recorded. Regardless of feedback valence, there was a general feedback-related negativi

Early psychosocial adversity and cortisol levels in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Previous studies suggest a different regulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) with lower diurnal cortisol levels, especially in the morning, in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared with controls. Since exposure to foetal and childhood psychosocial adversity has been associated with both ADHD and HPA-axis functioning, such exposures may explain these low cortisol levels in ADHD via early programming of the HPA-axis. Thus, our main aim was to retrospectively study foetal and early childhood exposures to psychosocial adversity in children

Effect of OROS methylphenidate on encopresis in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Although encopresis shows a high rate of comorbidity in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the etiologic origin of this relationship and the effect of ADHD drugs on encopresis are unclear. In this chart review, we explored the effect of OROS long-acting methylphenidate (MPH) treatment on encopresis in children with ADHD. We also evaluated the relationship between the clinical variables of ADHD and encopresis. METHODS: The sample consisted of 21 children and adolescents (20 boys and 1 girl) with encopresis and coexisting ADHD 7-15 years of age. Their cli

Sleep and daytime function in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: subtype differences.

OBJECTIVES: Although sleep disorders have been reported to affect more than half of adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the association between sleep and ADHD is poorly understood. The aims of our study were to investigate sleep-related variables in adults with ADHD and to assess if any differences exist between ADHD of the predominantly inattentive (ADHD-I) and combined (ADHD-C) subtypes. METHODS: We used the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the fatigue severity scale (FSS) to collect data on daytime sleepiness, sleep qua

Frequency of structural brain abnormalities among adult diagnosed with Attention - Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Although ADHD is known as a childhood disorder, it is prevalent among adults as well. Several studies have been conducted on the etiology of this disorder and its neurobiological and neuroanatomical manifestations in children, but the knowledge of adult ADHD is not enough. The present research was aimed at studying the structural brain abnormalities in adult ADHD cases. Fifteen adult patients diagnosed with ADHD, developed during their childhood, were selected for this study. In addition to clinical interview and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), all the participants were asked to fill the (AS

MRI morphometry of the cerebral ventricles in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A total of 27 right-handed patients aged 7-30 years with diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were studied using standard MRI scans. Of these, 14 were aged below 13 years. The volumes of the lateral ventricles were measured using T1-weighted MRI images of sagittal sections of the brain to a precision of 3 mm3. External head sizes were also measured to allow ventricle volumes to be normalized. All patients underwent complex neuropsychological investigations. Memory was assessed, along with visual, auditory, tactile, and spatial recognition functions and the motor and speech sph

Sleep disturbances and serum ferritin levels in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: A subset of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may present with impairing sleep disturbances. While preliminary evidence suggests that iron deficiency might be involved into the pathophysiology of daytime ADHD symptoms, no research has been conducted to explore the relationship between iron deficiency and sleep disturbances in patients with ADHD. The aim of this study was to assess the association between serum ferritin levels and parent reports of sleep disturbances in a sample of children with ADHD. SUBJECTS: Sixty-eight consecutively referred children

Dental caries and oral health behavior in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common developmental disorder. This study tested the hypothesis that children with ADHD exhibit a higher caries prevalence and poorer oral health behavior than children in a control group. Twenty-one children with ADHD and a control group of 79 children, all aged 13 yr, underwent a clinical dental examination and completed two questionnaires on dietary habits and dental hygiene habits. Differences between the groups regarding decayed, missed, or filled surfaces, decayed surfaces, initial caries lesions, and gingival inflammation were non-sig

Growth and sexual maturation in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Growth and maturation in children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been the subject of controversy for many years. The purpose of this review is to describe the course of current opinion, summarize findings that have been supported by scientific evidence and show why one widely disseminated opinion is unfounded. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have shown reductions in expected growth in height and weight in children starting treatment with stimulant medication. With prolonged treatment of 2-3 years, growth velocities show a trend towards nor

Executive functioning and olfactory identification in young adults with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

Young adults with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; N = 105) were compared with a control group (N = 64) on 14 measures of executive function and olfactory identification using a 2 (group) X 2 (sex) design. The ADHD group performed significantly worse on 11 measures. No Group X Sex interaction was found on any measures. No differences were found in the ADHD group as a function of ADHD subtype or comorbid oppositional defiant disorder. Comorbid depression influenced the results of only 1 test (Digit Symbol). After IQ was controlled for, some group differences in verbal working mem

Corpus callosum morphology in children with Tourette syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The aim of this study was to investigate the morphology of the corpus callosum (CC) in Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to determine whether these conditions affect distinct regional differences. Seventy-seven children and adolescents, aged 6 to 16 years, comprised the four research groups--16 patients with TS, 21 patients with TS plus ADHD, 13 patients with ADHD, and 27 unaffected control subjects. A semiautomated, computer-assisted procedure was used to measure the total area, five subregions, centerline length, perimeter, and bending angle of the CC

Bupropion exacerbates tics in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and Tourette's syndrome.

Concerns have been raised regarding the development of tics in some children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) receiving stimulants. Because in many patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) the ADHD symptoms are the major source of disability, alternative nonstimulant treatments are needed. Initial reports on bupropion have suggested that it may be an effective alternative in children and adults with ADHD. The value of bupropion as an alternative treatment for patients with comorbid TS and ADHD is determined by the question of association with exacerbation of tics. The purpose
