Awareness of Eating Disorders, Nutritional Knowledge, and Emotionally Driven Eating Among Polish Adolescents Aged 15-17-A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Despite the growing awareness of nutrition and the popularity of healthy lifestyles among adolescents, disordered eating behaviors-such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID)-remain significant public health concerns. ARFID, officially recognized only in 2013, is still poorly understood among youth. This study aimed to assess the relationship between adolescents' nutritional knowledge, emotional regulation, media influence, and eating behaviors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducte

Effects of metabotropic 2/3-glutamate receptor agonism and antagonism on activity-based anorexia model in mice.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder disproportionately found in female teens and young adults. It is often resistant to treatment, has a significant chance of relapse and is more lethal than other eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). There is no specific medication for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. Treatment consists of psychosocial means, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and nutritional counseling. Medication is usually used for treating comorbidities such as anxiety or to decrease obsessive-compulsive tendencies. These medicat

Liver Function Tests and Complete Blood Counts Among Adolescents With Restrictive Eating Disorders: What Are the Differences?

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been associated with abnormal liver function tests (LFTs) and hematologic tests; less is known about similar associations with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). We explored associations between the diagnosis of AN versus ARFID and liver function tests and complete blood counts. METHODS: Data from adolescent patients presenting to a disordered eating program in a southwestern state from 2013 to 2023 were examined for associations between alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lipase, hemoglobin (Hgb), platelet count (PLT)

Validation of the German Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) in children and adolescents with eating disorders and ADHD.

BACKGROUND: The Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ) is an internationally applied, parent-report questionnaire on children's eating behaviors, but has mainly been validated in population-based samples or children with obesity. This study presents a first comprehensive validation of the German version of the CEBQ in a treatment-seeking and community-based sample including anorexia nervosa (AN), avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), loss of control (LOC) eating, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and a healthy control group. METHODS: The German version of the

Rigidity and Sensory Sensitivity: Independent Contributions to Selective Eating in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults.

Objective: Selective or "picky" eating (SE) refers to rejection of a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar foods based on aversions to their sensory properties. When severe, SE can cause symptoms of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), including weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and/or psychosocial impairment. SE is highly prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to both typical development and other developmental disorders. A possible explanation for the high prevalence of SE in ASD is the effect of core ASD symptoms, repetitive/restrictive behaviors (e.g., rigi

The Incidence and Prevalence of Eating Disorders Between 1975 and 2024: A Commentary on Lee and Chi (2025).

Over the past five decades (1975-2024), research on eating disorders (EDs) has expanded significantly, as evidenced by the bibliometric analysis by Lee and Chi (2025). This growth reflects heightened public and academic interest, likely influenced by several key developments in the classification and epidemiology of EDs. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders has progressively included more ED diagnoses, such as bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder (BED), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) between 1975 and 2024. Recognition of EDs among males and older

[Lactose Malabsorption and Intolerance].

Lactose malabsorption and lactose intolerance are common yet clinically distinct conditions. Lactose malabsorption refers to the passage of undigested lactose into the colon due to lactase deficiency, whereas lactose intolerance involves the onset of gastrointestinal symptoms following lactose ingestion in the presence of malabsorption. Alactasia is a rare congenital disorder characterized by complete absence of lactase activity. Primary hypolactasia is a physiological and genetically determined decline in lactase activity occurring in adulthood. Globally, the prevalence of lactose malabsorpti

Feeding and eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a group of prevalent psychiatric illnesses with an onset in early to late adolescence-a time of significant neural development, physical and psychologic growth, and self-exploration. The etiology and neurobiology of EDs are not well understood, but EDs are recognized as brain-based illnesses with serious acute and long-term consequences if undertreated or ignored. Two EDs, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), have historically been the primary EDs of focus. The DSM-5 updated diagnostic criteria for these disorders added two more: binge-eating disorder (BED

Eating Disorder Screening in Adults With Williams Syndrome: A Preliminary Report.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorder (ED) symptoms have been studied in adults with other rare genetic conditions but not in Williams syndrome (WS). This study examined the prevalence of ED symptoms in adults with WS and associated clinical and demographic factors. We hypothesized that a proportion would screen positive for an ED, primarily with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) or binge-eating presentations. METHOD: Adults with WS completed modified versions of the Eating Disorder Assessment for DSM-5 and the Pica, ARFID, and Rumination Disorder Questionnaire, administered as semi-stru

"Inside the Gut-Brain Axis": Psychological Profiles of Adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and with Restrictive Eating Disorders.

Background: Individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) have an increased risk of developing psychiatric co-morbidities, including restrictive eating disorders (REDs), with which they share common pathogenic mechanisms, including gut-brain axis dysregulation. We conducted a case-control study systematically exploring the psychopathological profiles and alexithymia in adolescents with IBDs compared with a clinical group of adolescents diagnosed with REDs in order to test the hypothesis of common psychological characteristics between the two patient populations. Methods: We recruited 76

Adverse childhood experiences among a treatment-seeking sample of adults with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to examine the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among adults with eating disorders (EDs), to assess whether experiencing a greater number of ACEs is associated with more severe ED psychopathology, and to determine whether ACEs predict treatment outcome. METHOD: Participants were 1819 patients (88.5% female, ages 18-72) admitted to one of two treatment facilities at inpatient, residential, or partial hospitalisation levels of care. Eighteen-month Course and Outcome of Adolescent Restrictive Eating Disorders: Persistence, Crossover, and Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: In adults, low-weight restrictive eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa (AN), are marked by chronicity and diagnostic crossover from restricting to binge-eating/purging. Less is known about the naturalistic course of these eating disorders in adolescents, particularly atypical AN (atyp-AN) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). To inform nosology of low-weight restrictive eating disorders in adolescents, we examined outcomes including persistence, crossover, and recovery in an 18-month observational study. Xeropthalmia and optic neuropathy secondary to ARFID: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) commonly present with loss of weight or faltering growth in the setting of poor nutrition. However, patients with ARFID can present with micronutrient deficiencies without weight loss. In patients with ARFID, clinicians should be vigilant for micronutrient deficiencies and their presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a unique case of ARFID in a twelve-year-old girl, who developed micronutrient deficiencies and presented with acute visual loss with a preceding history of impaired night vision.
