Hydrogen Atomic Motions in Different Intramolecular Environments: H2O, H2S, and Formaldehyde (H2CO).

Atoms within complex environments are always moving, but this motion is only investigated through spectroscopic techniques that look at the collective motion of the rotations or normal vibrational modes. Atomic momentum spectroscopy, where a high energy electron back-scatters from an atom within a molecule, has the potential to investigate the motion of specific atoms which can vary based on their chemical environment. To test and demonstrate the sensitivity of this technique, we have performed experiments on the H atomic motion within water (H2O), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and formaldehyde (H2C

Atmospheric muography for imaging and monitoring tropic cyclones.

Large-scale solid bodies on Earth such as volcanoes and man-made pyramids have been visualized with solid earth muography, and the recently invented technique, acqueous muography, has already demonstrated its capability to visualize ocean tides and tsunami. In this work, atmospheric muography, a technique to visualize and monitor the vertical profile of tropic cyclones (TCs) is presented for the first time. The density distribution and time-dependent behavior of several TCs which had approached Kagoshima, Japan, has been investigated with muography. The resultant time-sequential images capture

Electrochemical behavior of 2'-halogenated derivatives of N,N-dimethyl-4-aminoazobenzene at mercury electrode.

The electrochemical behavior of 2'-halogeno-N,N-dimethyl-4-aminoazobenzene derivatives was investigated using various polarographic and voltammetric methods. The peak potentials of these derivatives were observed to shift towards negative values along with an increase in the pH. A reduction of the azo linkage took place via two electrons at pH > 4, but four electrons at pH < 4 in aqueous-ethanol mixtures. The standard rate constants were determined with (Laviron technique) or without (Nicholson technique) taking the adsorption phenomena into account. The diffusion coefficients were calculated

Image tracking study on courtship behavior of Drosophila.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there have been extensive studies aimed at decoding the DNA. Identifying the genetic cause of specific changes in a simple organism like Drosophila may help scientists recognize how multiple gene interactions may make some people more susceptible to heart disease or cancer. Investigators have devised experiments to observe changes in the gene networks in mutant Drosophila that responds differently to light, or have lower or higher locomotor activity. However, these studies focused on the behavior of the individual fly or on pair-wise interactions in the study of ag

Aquatic Advancements: Refining and Validating a Zebrafish Survival Blood Collection Technique.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a cornerstone model organism for studying vertebrate development, human diseases, drug discovery, and toxicology. A key challenge in leveraging this model lies in the need for repeatable, nonlethal blood sampling, essential for longitudinal studies. Due to the aquatic environment, lack of easily accessible vasculature, small size, and blood volume of this species, blood sampling of zebrafish presents a unique set of biologic, technical, and logistical challenges. Despite advancements, standardized survival blood collection protocols for zebrafish remain u

A magnetic resonance imaging study of horizontal rectus muscle palsies.

The assessment of extraocular muscle function is usually performed indirectly by an examination of ocular motility. We have utilized magnetic resonance imaging, in both cine and static modes, to directly observe the contractility behavior of the extraocular muscles. This noninvasive technique was applied to the study of patients with horizontal rectus muscle palsies. In all cases, the palsied muscle was of a smaller diameter than its normal counterpart. This size differential was noted in all fields of gaze. Additional studies are required to determine the relative contributions of denervation

Four-Dimensional Cine Cinematic Rendering of Structural Heart and Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices: An Illustrative Technical Experience.

Patients with implanted cardiac devices are a rapidly growing imaging population, and electrocardiogram-gated cardiac computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used to characterize device geometry, multi-device relationships, and dynamic behavior across the cardiac cycle. Cinematic rendering (CR) is a photorealistic three-dimensional (3D) visualization technique for cardiac CT whose established contribution in this population is communicative: it conveys 3D device geometry and material distinctions within a single rendered volume. We describe a demonstrative case series extending CR across the

The Influence of Self-Heating Iron on the Thermal, Mechanical, and Swelling Properties of PDMS Composites for Organic Solvents Removal.

Volatile organic compounds pollute the environment and pose a serious threat to human health due to their toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. In this context, it is highly desirable to fabricate high-performance poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) composites to remove organic solvents from the environment using a simple technique. Therefore, in the present study, Fe-PDMS composites were fabricated using a technique based on magnetic induction heating with iron particles serving as a self-heating agent. Under an alternating magnetic field, the iron particles served as a thermal source that

[The Sensory Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation Technique (SMART): a behavioral assessment scale for disorders of consciousness].

INTRODUCTION: Difficulties in detecting bedside signs of consciousness in non-communicative patients still lead to a high rate of misdiagnosis illustrating the need to employ standardized behavioral assessment scales. STATE OF ART: The Sensory Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation Technique (SMART) is a behavioral assessment scale of consciousness that assesses responses to multimodal sensory stimulation in disorders of consciousness. These stimulations can also be considered to have therapeutic value. PERSPECTIVES: We here review the different components and use of the SMART assessment and

Acute alcohol in prefrontal cortex is characterized by enhanced inhibition that transitions to excitation.

Acute alcohol can have profound effects on the brain and behavior. Dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) function is especially sensitive to disruption from acute alcohol exposure. The acute, broadly inhibitory pharmacodynamics of alcohol in dmPFC have been well characterized in in vitro and ex vivo preparations, but seemingly contradict the stimulatory behavioral effects of alcohol at low-to-moderate doses. To determine the effects of acute alcohol on dmPFC activity, this study combined multiple routes of alcohol exposure across multiple rodent species and preparations and utilized modeling

Comparison of lithium and haloperidol therapy in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Three patients suffering from Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome were initially treated with haloperidol. Depressive side effects and symptom breakthrough necessitated the search for another agent. The efficacy of lithium carbonate in treating stereotyped hyperkinetic behavior (such as is seen in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome) prompted the evaluation of lithium carbonate. An objective behavioral observation technique, clinical ratings and the patient's subjective reports were used to systematically record the response to treatment during the entire course of the study. Initially blood plasma Li+

Topological transitions in swarmalators systems.

After its development, the swarmalators model attracted a great deal of attention since it was found to be very suitable to reproduce several behaviors in collective dynamics. However, few works explain the transitions that are observed while varying system parameters. In this letter, we demonstrate that the changes observed in swarmalator dynamics are governed by changes in the system's topology. To provide a deeper understanding of these changes, we present a topological framework for the swarmalator system and determine the topological charge Q and the helicity γ of the corresponding topolo

Changing or validating physician opioid prescribing behaviors through audit and feedback and academic detailing interventions in primary care.

BACKGROUND: In Ontario, Canada, province-wide initiatives supporting safer opioid prescribing in primary care include voluntary audit and feedback reports and academic detailing. In this process evaluation, we aimed to determine the fidelity of delivery and receipt of the interventions, the observed change strategies used by physicians, potential mechanisms of action, and how complementary the initiatives can be to each other. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with academic detailers and with physicians who received both interventions. Academic detailer interviews were coded u

Asymmetric rotations slow down diffusion under confinement.

Translation and rotation are the two most fundamental forms of diffusion, yet their coupling mechanism is not clear, especially under confinement. Here, we provided evidence of the coupling between rotation and translation using a substituted benzene molecule as an example. A counterintuitive behavior was observed where the movement of the smaller molecule with an asymmetric shape was unexpectedly slower than the larger one with a symmetric shape in confined channels of zeolite. We showed that this diffusion behavior was caused by the presence of the specific and selective interaction of the a

Complex Nanoparticle Diffusional Motion in Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) is a powerful in situ videography technique that has the potential to allow us to observe solution-phase dynamic processes at the nanoscale, including imaging the diffusion and interaction of nanoparticles. Artefactual effects imposed by the irradiated and confined liquid-cell vessel alter the system from normal "bulk-like" behavior in multiple ways. These artefactual LCTEM effects will leave their fingerprints in the motion behavior of the diffusing objects, which can be revealed through careful analysis of the object-motion trajectories. I

Intestinal Epithelial and Intraepithelial T Cell Crosstalk Mediates a Dynamic Response to Infection.

Intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) are located at the critical interface between the intestinal lumen, which is chronically exposed to food and microbes, and the core of the body. Using high-resolution microscopy techniques and intersectional genetic tools, we investigated the nature of IEL responses to luminal microbes. We observed that TCRγδ IELs exhibit unique microbiota-dependent location and movement patterns in the epithelial compartment. This behavioral pattern quickly changes upon exposure to different enteric pathogens, resulting in increased interepithelial cell (EC) scann

Researching a local heroin market as a complex adaptive system.

This project applies agent-based modeling (ABM) techniques to better understand the operation, organization, and structure of a local heroin market. The simulation detailed was developed using data from an 18-month ethnographic case study. The original research, collected in Denver, CO during the 1990s, represents the historic account of users and dealers who operated in the Larimer area heroin market. Working together, the authors studied the behaviors of customers, private dealers, street-sellers, brokers, and the police, reflecting the core elements pertaining to how the market operated. Af

Men who have sex with transgender women: challenges to category-based HIV prevention.

Although transgender women are acknowledged as a priority population for HIV prevention, there is little knowledge on men who have sex with transgender women (MSTGWs). MSTGWs challenge conventional sexual orientation categories in public health and HIV prevention research, and warrant increased attention from the public health community. This paper used qualitative techniques to analyze how MSTGWs describe their sexual orientation identities, and to explore the correspondence between men's identities and sexual behaviors with transgender women. We conducted in-depth semi-structured individual

Differences in the retinohypothalamic tract in albino Lewis versus brown Norway rat strains.

Differences in sleep-wake patterns in response to light-dark stimulation have been observed between albino Lewis and pigmented Brown Norway strains of rats, which may be associated with albinism. Since several anatomical differences have been demonstrated in the visual pathways of albino and pigmented mammals, the present study was undertaken to determine whether additional differences in visual pathways of these rat strains exist that might account for their behavioral differences. Using anterograde tracing techniques and image analysis, we have investigated the retinal projections of Lewis a
