Management of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Comparative Study between Epleys Manouvre and Betahistine.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vestibular disorder, accounting for 20% of all vertigo cases. Idiopathic BPPV is most common between the ages of 50 and 70, although the condition is found in all age groups. This study was conducted in our institute on 90 patients who presented to the outpatient department with history of vertigo and were diagnosed with BPPV via a positive Dix Hallpike test. Patients were randomnly placed in three groups of 30 each. Patients in Group A were treated with Epleys manoeuvre alone, in Group B were treated with Epleys Manouvr…

Long-term outcome and health-related quality of life in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

A prospective cohort study was designed to evaluate the long-term outcome and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (PC-BPPV) treated by the particle repositioning maneuver (PRM) in the outpatient clinic of a general community hospital. Fifty individuals with PC-BPPV were included, and 45 (90%) completed the study. The diagnosis was based on the history of short episodes of vertigo and a positional nystagmus during the Dix-Hallpike test (DHT). All patients were treated by a single PRM, and relapses were evaluated by DHT at …

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in older women may be related to osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), so-called canalolithiasis and cupulolithiasis, usually occurs after head trauma or viral vestibular neuritis. In many cases, the cause remains obscure, and it often affects women more than 50 years old. The goal of this work was to study a possible relationship between BPPV and osteopenia or osteoporosis. Thirty-two women, whose ages ranged from 50 to 85 years (median age, 69 years), who had BPPV and were free of any other otoneurologic history, were selected. The diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis was confirmed by a bone mineral density measur…

Long-term results of posterior semicircular canal occlusion for intractable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common condition which is usually managed conservatively, surgical intervention being recommended only for those small number of patients in whom it becomes persistent and incapacitating. The results of surgery in 13 patients who underwent posterior semicircular canal occlusion for intractable (> 12 months duration) and incapacitating BPPV are presented with special emphasis on their long-term follow-up. The mean follow-up was 66 months (range, 29-119 months). All patients reported complete and immediate resolution of their positional vertigo, w…

Functional Connectivity and White Matter Microstructural Alterations of Thalamic Subregions in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

OBJECTIVE: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common peripheral vestibular disorder. Although the thalamus serves as a key node in vestibular pathways, its role in the central regulation of BPPV remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the functional and structural alterations of thalamus in patients with BPPV. METHODS: The study recruited 52 BPPV patients and 52 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers. Seed-based analysis was used to explore functional connectivity (FC) alterations between thalamic subregions and the whole brain in patient group. Probabilistic fiber trac…

Residual Dizziness Characteristics of Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss Patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

INTRODUCTION: ISSNHL, a common clinical condition, can be accompanied by vertigo. Initially, research on sudden deafness primarily focused on the hearing loss itself, with less emphasis on episodic vertigo. However, as vertigo research has advanced, it has been recognized that BPPV is a frequent accompaniment to ISSNHL-associated vertigo. Even after treatment, some patients may experience residual dizziness. This study investigates the characteristics of patients with ISSNHL accompanied by BPPV and the impact of residual dizziness on their lives. METHODS: This study is being conducted on pati
