The Internalization of Stigma and the Shaping of the Grief Experience for Peers Bereaved by a Drug-Related Death.

People who use drugs form a significant part of the community who are impacted by drug-related deaths, but their stigmatized positioning in society yields implications for their access to support and the social recognition of their grief. This project explores how the internalization of drug-related stigmas shapes the grief experience for peers bereaved by a DRD. Six individuals who experienced the drug death of a peer during their own time in active addiction participated in semi-structured interviews, analyzed by interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three superordinate themes are report

Factors of prolonged-grief-disorder symptom trajectories for ICU bereaved family surrogates.

BACKGROUND: Bereaved people experience distinct trajectories of prolonged-grief-disorder (PGD) symptoms. A few studies from outside critical care investigated limited factors of PGD-symptom trajectories without a theoretical framework. We aimed to characterize factors associated with ICU bereaved surrogates' PGD-symptom trajectories, drawing from the integrative framework of predictors for bereavement outcomes, emphasizing factors modifiable by ICU care. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 291 family surrogates. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine associations of three prev…

Bereaved mothers' experience of expressing and donating breast milk: An interpretative phenomenological study.

Perinatal loss is a devastating event for any mother. What is often overlooked is a mothers continued ability to lactate following the death of her child. Donor breast milk is a commodity highly sought after given its value for feeding sick babies resident in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of mothers who have expressed and donated their breast milk following the loss of their infant. Seven bereaved mothers who donated milk to the Human Milk Bank in Northern Ireland were recruited. These women took part in semistructured interviews, which explore

Grief Symptoms Promote Inflammation During Acute Stress Among Bereaved Spouses.

The death of a spouse is associated with maladaptive immune alterations; grief severity may exacerbate this link. We investigated whether high grief symptoms were associated with an amplified inflammatory response to subsequent stress among 111 recently bereaved older adults. Participants completed a standardized psychological stressor and underwent a blood draw before, 45 min after, and 2 hr after the stressor. Those experiencing high grief symptoms (i.e., scoring > 25 on the Inventory of Complicated Grief) experienced a 45% increase in interleukin-6 (IL-6; a proinflammatory cytokine) per hou

Fear of Death and Death Acceptance Among Bereaved Adults: Associations With Prolonged Grief.

This study aimed to analyze fear of death and neutral acceptance of death after a significant loss and their associations with prolonged grief. The sample of the study included 239 bereaved participants. Time since the loss ranged from 6 to 72 months. We found that neutral acceptance of death was associated with older age, a natural cause of death, and the ability to find meaning in the death of a close one. Fear of death was negatively associated with the frequency of practicing religion. We found that fear of death but not neutral acceptance was significantly associated with prolonged grief

Palliative care for patients with motor neurone disease and their bereaved carers: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Internationally, it is widely accepted that holistic care is as an integral part of the care for people with motor neurone disease (MND), and their informal carers. However the optimal role of generalist and specialist palliative care, and how it integrates with specialist neurology services, is not fully established. Using a qualitative approach we sought to examine end of life care for people with MND in Northern Ireland, and the role of specialist and generalist palliative care. METHODS: Qualitative study involving a convenience sample of 13 bereaved carers recruited using the

Psychological functioning of recently bereaved, middle-aged women: the first 13 months.

This study examined the natural course of psychological functioning in recently bereaved middle-aged women. 69 widows were assessed four times (T1-T4) between the period of 4 to 13 mo. after the loss and were compared to a matched nonwidowed group of 57. Of the SCL-90 feelings of depression, agoraphobic behavior, anxiety, hostility, somatization, feelings of insufficiency, and sleep disorders were heightened at 4 mo. after bereavement compared to the norm group. Significantly higher psychological dysfunctioning was found on all SCL-90 subscales than for non-widows. Over time, a decrease in psy…

German-language adaptation of the Bereavement Risk Assessment Tool (BRAT): findings on the inter-rater reliability.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) affects approximately 10% of the bereaved adults, with prevalence rates in Germany ranging between 4.7–5.4%. Early identification through pre-death risk assessment is crucial for optimal bereavement care, yet no validated German-language instrument exists. The Bereavement Risk Assessment Tool (BRAT) represents a promising solution but requires cultural adaptation and validation. The aim of this study was to adapt the BRAT for German-speaking countries and evaluate its inter-rater reliability among healthcare professionals in palliative care and hospic…

Continuity of midwifery care in war-related bereavement and partner trauma: Emotional labour, boundaries and supervision.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in contexts of war-related bereavement and partner trauma creates complex demands on midwives who may accompany women through prolonged grief, uncertainty and psychological distress. Although emotional labour and secondary traumatic stress in midwifery have been widely discussed, less is known about midwives providing continuity of care when trauma is ongoing rather than event-based. AIM: To examine how midwives' experiences of providing continuity of care in contexts of war-related bereavement and partner trauma were documented, interpreted, and professionally processed…

"As Long as I Live, My Sweet Boy You'll Be:" Parents' Continuing Bonds in Early Bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Bereaved parents seek ways to maintain connections with their deceased child throughout their lifelong grief. These continuing bonds may bolster parental social functioning, yet limited research has explored continuing bonds early in bereavement. AIMS: To explore how parents maintain connection with their child within the first 2 years following death. METHODS: Parents of children who died from cancer 6-24 months prior completed the 11-item Continuing Bonds Scale (CBS) and an open-ended question querying ongoing connections. CBS scores ranged from 11 to 55, with higher scores ind…

Earthquake exposure, cognitive integration, and psychiatric symptoms in bereavement: A moderated mediation with fulfilling daily activities.

INTRODUCTION: Bereaved individuals experiencing losses tend to experience better psychological well-being if they experience higher levels of cognitive integration. This study aims to investigate the everyday life context where this process could take place, given that bereaved individuals also experience disruptions to fulfilling daily activities. METHODS: Among a nationally representative sample of 1588 bereaved Turkish people 7 months after the 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake (September-October 2023), we conducted moderated mediation analyses to investigate whether (1) cognitive integration m

Maternal experienced bereavement and offspring mental health in early adulthood: the role of modifiable parental factors.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 78% of children experience the death of a close friend or family member by 16 years of age, yet longitudinal research examining the mental health outcomes of wider experiences of bereavement is scarce. We conducted a longitudinal investigation of the association between maternal experienced bereavement before the age of 11 years and offspring depressive and anxiety disorders at age 18 and examined moderation of this association by modifiable parental factors. METHODS: We analysed data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a UK-based birth c…

Health-Related Quality of Life and Bereavement in the 2019 Georgia Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Poor Self-Rated Health (SRHp) is part of a four-item scale for self-assessment. SRH from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) is used to test hypotheses linking population-level well-being influenced by bereavement due to the death of a close friend or relative. By linking the prevalence rates of population-level well-being with exposure to bereavement, we extend our knowledge of this exposure beyond single-person studies. SRHp and bereavement were asked about in the 2019 field survey of 7354 adults aged 18 years and older. Multiple imputation was applied to handle missi…

Motor Neurone Disease family carers' experiences of caring, palliative care and bereavement: an exploratory qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative disease with a sudden onset, a rapid progression, a profile of complex disabilities and fatal consequences. Caring for a person with MND is an unremitting commitment, yet little research has examined the experiences and needs of carers for palliative care and bereavement care. AIM: This study explored the experiences of MND family carers, both during their time as carers and following bereavement. Particular attention was paid to the carers' prolonged grief status and to the implications for service delivery, including palliative …

Comparing the quality of dying for patients with hematological malignancy and solid tumors: A bereavement study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although research on palliative care in hematological malignancies has increased, research examining quality of death (QOD) and quality of care (QOC) in this population remains limited. This study compared QOD and QOC between patients with hematological malignancies and those with solid tumors. METHODS: The authors conducted a secondary analysis of a nationwide mortality follow-up survey of bereaved family members in Japan (2017-2018). The study included 3575 decedents with hematological malignancies and 50,592 with solid tumors. Propensity score matching was performed to adjust f
