Investigation into the erosion mechanism of salicylate-based poly(anhydride-esters).

Salicylate-based poly(anhydride-esters), collectively referred to as PolyAspirin, hydrolytically degrade into salicylic acid, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The variations of the poly(anhydride-ester) investigated in this article are linked by adipic acid, suberic acid, or sebacic acid. To elucidate the erosion mechanism of these polymers, water uptake, mass loss, contact angle, and changes in device thickness were monitored as a function of in vitro degradation time. The polymers examined here appeared to primarily undergo surface erosion. The adipate homopolymer absorbed the

Fabrication of biocompatible hydrogel coatings for implantable medical devices using Fenton-type reaction.

In this paper the authors present a simple method of coating polyurethane (PU) surface with poly(vinyl pirrolidone) (PVP) hydrogel. The hydrogel-coated materials were designed for use in biomedical applications, especially in blood-contacting devices. The coating is formed due to free radical macromolecular grafting-crosslinking. Polymer surface was first immersed in an organic solution containing radical source: cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) with an addition of a branching and anchoring agent: ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (EGDMA). In the second step, the substrate was immersed in a water sol

Bridging the gap between visualization and reality: integrating degradation and metabolism data to elucidate recombinant collagen behavior.

Current methodologies face limitations in elucidating the in vivo behavior of biodegradable protein-based biomaterials, particularly crosslinked recombinant collagen materials. While isotope and fluorescence labeling techniques enable sensitive tracking, they primarily reflect the migration and distribution of labeled molecules rather than the composition and transformation of degradation products. To address this gap, this study proposes an integrated analytical strategy that combines in vitro simulated degradation product characterization with in vivo biological validation. Degradation produ

Hydrogels strategies for organ adhesions: from mechanism to application.

Organ adhesions pose a significant clinical challenge, arising from factors such as congenital adhesions caused by embryonic developmental abnormalities, as well as acquired adhesions resulting from inflammation or surgery. This phenomenon commonly occurs in conditions such as peritonitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and malignant tumor infiltration. Postoperative adhesions might cause serious complications such as chronic pain, infertility and intestinal obstruction. Traditional treatment methods (anti-adhesion membranes and drug therapy), have some limitations, including insufficient mechan

Beyond Bioactive Glass Composition: Using Morphology to Improve In Vitro and In Vivo Performance.

Compared to compositional functionalization with therapeutic ions, changing bioactive glass (BG) morphology, i.e., the size, shape, and surface structure of BG specimens, is typically not considered as an influential factor for improving performance. However, it has a large influence on the outcome of various experiments, particularly those studies where the material comes in contact with aqueous solutions, including acellular immersion studies, in vitro experiments using cells or bacteria, and even animal experiments and clinical studies. One major aspect is the surface area to volume ratio,

Data-Driven Framework for the Prediction of PEGDA Hydrogel Mechanics.

Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels are biocompatible and photo-cross-linkable, with accessible values of elastic modulus ranging from kPa to MPa, leading to their wide use in biomedical and soft material applications. However, PEGDA gels possess complex microstructures, limiting the use of standard polymer theories to describe them. As a result, we lack a foundational understanding of how to relate their composition, processing, and mechanical properties. To address this need, we use a data-driven approach to develop an empirical predictive framework based on high-quality data

Generating dual structurally and functionally skin-mimicking hydrogels by crosslinking cell-membrane compartments.

The skin is intrinsically a cell-membrane-compartmentalized hydrogel with high mechanical strength, potent antimicrobial ability, and robust immunological competence, which provide multiple protective effects to the body. Methods capable of preparing hydrogels that can simultaneously mimic the structure and function of the skin are highly desirable but have been proven to be a challenge. Here, dual structurally and functionally skin-mimicking hydrogels are generated by crosslinking cell-membrane compartments. The crosslinked network is formed via free radical polymerization using olefinic doub

Elastin-like recombinamer-mediated hierarchical mineralization coatings on Zr-16Nb-xTi (x = 4,16 wt%) alloy surfaces improve biocompatibility.

The biocompatibility of biomedical materials is vital to their applicability and functionality. However, modifying surfaces for enhanced biocompatibility using traditional surface treatment techniques is challenging. We employed a mineralizing elastin-like recombinamer (ELR) self-assembling platform to mediate mineralization on Zr-16Nb-xTi (x = 4,16 wt%) alloy surfaces, resulting in the modification of surface morphology and bioactivity while improving the biocompatibility of the material. We modulated the level of nanocrystal organization by adjusting the cross-linker ratio. Nanoindentation t

Direct Synthesis of Aliphatic Polyesters with Pendant Hydroxyl Groups from Bio-Renewable Monomers: A Reactive Precursor for Functionalized Biomaterials.

Introducing desired functionalities into biomaterials is an effective way to obtain functionalized biomaterials. A versatile platform with the possibility of postsynthesis functionalization is highly desired but challenging in biomedical engineering. In this work, linear aliphatic polyesters with pendant hydroxyl (PEOH) groups were directly synthesized using renewable malic acid/tartaric acid as raw materials under mild conditions through the polyesterification reaction promoted by 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG). The hydroxyl groups on PEOH provide an active stepping stone for the fabricat

Poly-Catecholic Functionalization of Biomolecules for Rapid Gelation, Robust Injectable Bioadhesion, and Near-Infrared Responsiveness.

Mussel-inspired catechol-functionalization of degradable natural biomaterials has garnered significant interest as an approach to achieve bioadhesion for sutureless wound closure. However, conjugation capacity in standard coupling reactions, such as carbodiimide chemistry, is limited by low yield and lack of abundant conjugation sites. Here, a simple oxidative polymerization step before conjugation of catechol-carrying molecules (i.e., 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine, l-DOPA) as a potential approach to amplify catechol function in bioadhesion of natural gelatin biomaterials is proposed.
