BACKGROUND: Paracoccidioidomycosis is not the most common fungal disease in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), except for endemic regions in Latin America countries.
CASE: A 33-year-old man with HIV presented with mulberry-like lesions on the palate. The diagnosis was made by exfoliative cytology and Papanicolaou staining. Microscopic analysis revealed fungal structures with birefringent walls and exosporulation conferring an airplane radial motor appearance, or even bowel-like or goblet-like forms compatible with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

Light and scanning electron microscopic study of tissues obtained at biopsy and at autopsy from a 64-year-old male drug addict revealed the presence of foreign body granulomas associated with birefringent crystals in the lungs, liver, bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes. Caseating granulomas associated with Mycobacteriaceae tuberculosis were also present. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis identified the crystals as talc. Minute talc crystals were also visualized in urine sediment, by scanning electron microscopy and identified by energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

We describe the main pathologic changes in small ruminants affected by AA amyloidosis, together with the partial sequence of the protein involved. Twenty-one sheep and one goat were selected for presenting macroscopic kidney lesions compatible with systemic amyloidosis. Available tissue samples were studied by histologic, immunopathologic, and ultrastructural means. Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals were identified in synovial fluid white blood cells during an episode of acute arthritis in a patient with ochronosis and chondrocalcinosis. Review of the histories and radiographs of 5 other patients with ochronosis demonstrated two additional instances of chondrocalcinosis. Both of these patients had episodes of arthritis consistent with pseudogout. This suggests that pseudogout, which has been found in increased incidence in some metabolic diseases, may also be more common in ochronosis.

We have shown that the optical angular momentum is conserved on both sides of the interface for a Gaussian beam with circular polarization incident on an axially symmetric interface. In particular, the difference between reflected and incident spin angular momentums (SAMs) in the axial direction is transformed into the orbit angular momentum (OAM) of the reflected beam. Under this conclusion, one can easily evaluate the Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift of reflected and refracted beams, including the case of birefringence where the transmitted beams can be ordinary refracted beams or evanescent beams.

Amyloidosis is a heterogenous group of disorders, caused by the deposition of insoluble fibrils derived from misfolded proteins in the extracellular space of various organs. Amyloidosis of the salivary glands is a rare occurrence. Due to non-specific clinical presentation, the diagnosis can be overlooked. Here we present a case of a localized bilateral parotid glands AL kappa-light chain amyloid deposition without systemic involvement, as well as a literature review.
