In March 2018, an algal bloom of Pseudo-nitzschia was detected, for the first time, in a semi-enclosed lagoon in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia Borneo. The plankton samples were collected for cell enumeration and species identification by electron microscopy and molecular characterization. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was performed to detect and quantify the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) in both the plankton and shellfish samples. The abundance of Pseudo-nitzschia cells ranged from 5.6 × 105 to 3.5 × 106 cell L-1 during the bloom event. Morphological observatio

The occurrence of freshwater harmful algal bloom toxins impacting the coastal ocean is an emerging threat, and the potential for invertebrate prey items to concentrate toxin and cause harm to human and wildlife consumers is not yet fully recognized. We examined toxin uptake and release in marine mussels for both particulate and dissolved phases of the hepatotoxin microcystin, produced by the freshwater cyanobacterial genus Microcystis. We also extended our experimental investigation of particulate toxin to include oysters (Crassostrea sp.) grown commercially for aquaculture. California mussels

Mercury (Hg) is considered a contaminant of global concern for coastal environments due to its toxicity, widespread occurrence in sediment, and bioaccumulation in tissue. Coastal New Jersey, USA, is characterized by shallow bays and wetlands that provide critical habitat for wildlife but share space with expanding urban landscapes. This study was designed as an assessment of the magnitude and distribution of Hg in coastal New Jersey sediments and critical species using publicly available data to highlight potential data gaps. Mercury concentrations in estuary sediments can exceed 2μg/g and cor

Immune function in bivalves can be adversely affected by long-term exposure to environmental contaminants. Investigating alterations in immunity can therefore yield relevant information about the relationship between exposure to environmental contaminants and susceptibility to infectious diseases. We have developed a rapid, cost-effective, and miniaturized immunocompetence assay to evaluate the phagocytic activity, viability, and concentration of hemocytes in freshwater and marine bivalves. Preliminary experiments were performed to optimize various aspects of the assay including 1) the time re

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) introduced into the environment from historical aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) releases are persistent sources of ground- and surface water contamination. This study evaluated invasive Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) as biomonitors in the Little Neshaminy Creek watershed (Pennsylvania, USA), adjacent to two former military installations with documented AFFF use, to assess their ability to integrate spatial and temporal variability in PFAS exposure. Surface water, sediment, and clam tissue were analyzed for 44 PFAS compounds using liquid chromatogra

Freshwater clams (Batissa violacea) and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) are popular and important socioeconomic food security commodities that are commercially available to both locals and the hotel industry. Clams and oysters are consumed with various levels of preparation, ranging from raw to fully cooked. This study examined the presence and levels of bacterial and parasitic contaminants in freshwater clams and oysters from selected sites in Fiji and subjected them to depuration with a sand filter setup under ultraviolet (UV) and non-UV conditions for 50 h. Compared to the non-UV setup, the UV

Plastic contamination is increasingly recognized as a critical issue in estuarine ecosystems, posing potential threats to aquatic organisms. Although estuaries represent key transition zones for plastics moving from continental sources to the ocean, their ecological fate and effects in these environments remain insufficiently studied. In particular, the trophic transfer of micro- and nanoplastics (NPs) through trophic chains and the associated health risks are still poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the ecotoxicological consequences of trophic exposure to different types of nanopla

Understanding how sub-individual disturbances propagate to organism-level functions remains a central challenge in ecotoxicology, particularly for benthic species exposed to emerging contaminants. In this study, the effects of barium chloride (BaCl2) were investigated in the clam Ruditapes decussatus using an integrative framework combining biochemical, lipidomic and functional endpoints. A total of 80 clams were exposed for five days to 0, 20, 40 and 80 mg/L BaCl2 (n = 20 per treatment), and analyses were conducted on whole soft tissues to capture organism-wide responses. Exposure induced a m

Gonadal development in Ruditapes philippinarum involves germ cell formation, sex differentiation, vitellogenesis, and maturation, regulated by complex genes-hormone interactions. To elucidate these mechanisms, multi-omics analyses (transcriptomics, proteomics, and steroid targeted metabolomics) and qPCR were applied to gonads across developmental stages in clams. Differential expression analysis revealed 332 testicular and 560 ovarian genes, alongside 174 testicular and 107 ovarian proteins. Integrated omics identified 12 concordantly annotated gene-protein pairs. Expressed levels for 14 genes

Global declines in wild mussel populations and production have been linked to the impacts of climate change and pollution. Summer die-offs of mussels (Perna canaliculus), spat retention issues, and a severe decline in mussel spat settlement have been reported in the Marlborough Sounds, an important area for mussel farming in New Zealand. Preliminary evidence suggests that naturally occurring contaminants and changing land use in the surrounding areas, could contribute to the decline of this species. The aim of this study was to determine whether trace metals affect the larval survival and sett

Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) is a widely used flame retardant in numerous commercial and industrial products. Due to its widespread release and detection in various environmental matrices, TCEP has raised great concerns about its risk to aquatic biota and human health. To this end, the present study investigates the TCEP environmental and human health mediated effects on aquatic biological species/models belonging to different trophic levels, as well as on human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Specifically, TCEP ability to promote (a) growth inhibition in algae, like the freshwater spec

Anthropogenic activities have drastically changed environmental conditions worldwide, negatively impacting biodiversity and ecosystem services. At the same time, the majority of the human population lives in urban areas that are greatly altered from natural habitats. Nevertheless, many species thrive in these urban environments. To improve our knowledge of evolution and adaptation in these anthropogenically impacted habitats, we conducted the widest series of stress experiments to date with three marine taxa: one mussel and two gammarid species. We compared intraspecific populations from prote

Caged mussels make biomonitoring studies possible with their ability to take up pollutants in the industrial zones. The goal of this study was applied to assess metal levels in the biomonitoring organism Mytillus galloprovincialis Lamark, 1819 for transplantation from three locations for two periods (2016-2018) in the industrial zone of the Eastern Aegean Sea. Metals were also determined in sediments; high concentrations of Hg, As and Zn in surficial sediments of Nemrut Bay can cause hazardous impacts on the aquatic environment with respect to sediment quality guidelines. The highest contamina

Various hydroxyapatite (HA) powders synthesized at different temperatures are deposited on titanium alloy by using an atmospheric plasma spray process. These different HA powders were synthesized from Indian clam seashells through the hydrothermal technique at varying temperatures from 700 to 1000 °C for a 2 h time duration in our previous study. The synthesized HA powders are spray-dried to obtain agglomerated powders suitable for spraying during the coating application. Crystallite size, Ca/P ratio, and crystallinity of agglomerated HA powders and their respective coatings are estimated by s

Jurujuba Cove is located in Guanabara Bay (adjacent to highly populated city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), which receives diffuse sources of contaminants along with two main freshwater inputs (the Cachoeira and Icaraí rivers), and hosts mussel farms. The main goal of this work was to evaluate the total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations distributions in the sediments of the cove and their associations with physical and chemical parameters, thereby assessing their geochemical behavior. Twenty samples of surface sediments were collected and characterized for grain size, pH, redo
