Reproducibility of perfusion blood volume and ventilation imaging for lung function assessment.

Objective. To assess the reproducibility of dual-energy CT (DECT) derived perfusion blood volume (PBV) and four-dimensional CT (4DCT) derived lung ventilation images.Approach.We enrolled patients on an IRB-approved clinical trial of functional lung imaging. All had locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with definitive, conventionally fractionated concurrent chemoradiation radiotherapy (RT) with or without consolidation immunotherapy. Patients completed imaging at three timepoints: (1) RT simulation, (2) second-week of RT, and (3) six-months post-RT. Free-breathing 4DCT and…

Automated lung vessel segmentation reveals blood vessel volume redistribution in viral pneumonia.

PURPOSE: It is known from histology studies that lung vessels are affected in viral pneumonia. However, their diagnostic potential as a chest CT imaging parameter has only rarely been exploited. The purpose of this study is to develop a robust method for automated lung vessel segmentation and morphology analysis and apply it to a large chest CT dataset. METHODS: In total, 509 non-enhanced chest CTs (NECTs) and 563 CT pulmonary angiograms (CTPAs) were included. Sub-groups were patients with healthy lungs (group_NORM, n = 634) and those RT-PCR-positive for Influenza A/B (group_INF, n = 159) and

Sensitivity of blood volume monitoring for fluid status assessment in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study investigates the use of blood volume monitoring (BVM) markers for the assessment of fluid status. METHODS: Predialysis fluid overload (FO) and BVM data were collected in 55 chronic hemodialysis patients in 317 treatments. Predialysis FO was measured using bioimpedance spectroscopy. The slope of the intravascular volume decrease over time normalized by ultrafiltration rate (Slope4h) was used as the primary BVM marker and compared against FO. RESULTS: Average relative blood volume curves were well separated in different FO groups between 0 and 5 liters. Receiver-ope…

Blood supply safety in Afghanistan: a national assessment of high-volume facilities.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available regarding blood supply safety in Afghanistan. The purpose of this study was to assess blood safety through serologic and observational measures in Afghanistan. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional assessment included the 40 highest-volume facilities collecting and transfusing blood nationally identified in a previous survey. At each facility, study representatives completed a standardized instrument assessing staff performance of transfusion-related activities and performed rapid testing for human immunodeficiency virus, syphilis, and hepa

Pulmonary blood volume imaging with dual-energy computed tomography: spectrum of findings.

Dual-energy (DE) pulmonary blood volume (PBV) computed tomography (CT) has recently become available on clinical CT systems. The underlying physical principle of DECT is the fact that the photoelectric effect is strongly dependent on the CT energies resulting in different degrees of x-ray attenuation for different materials at different energy levels. DECT thus enables the characterization and quantification of iodine within tissues via imaging at different x-ray energies and analysis of attenuation differences. Technical approaches to DECT include dual-source scanners acquiring two scans with…

Relative blood volume monitoring during hemodialysis in end stage renal disease patients.

A crucial point in the haemodialysis (HD) treatment is the reliable assessment of hydration status. An inadequate removed volume may lead to chronic fluid overload which can lead to hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy and heart failure. Therefore, the estimation of the hydration state and the management of a well-tolerated water removal is an important challenge. This exploratory study aims at identifying new parameters obtained from continuous Blood Volume Monitoring (BVM) allowing a qualitative evaluation of hydration status for verifying the adequacy of HD setting parameters (e.g UFR…

Non-invasive monitoring of blood haemoglobin for analysis of fluid volume kinetics.

BACKGROUND: A commercially available pulse oximeter that reports blood haemoglobin (Hb) concentration is evaluated. This study considers whether this device can provide serial Hb data that would be sufficiently reliable for volume kinetic analysis of infusion fluids. METHODS: Forty infusions of 5 or 10 ml/kg of acetated Ringer's solution were given over 15 min in 10 healthy volunteers. Hb was measured on 17 different occasions over 120 min using the Radical 7 pulse oximeter and compared with the result of invasive blood sampling (control). A one-volume kinetic model was applied to each data s

Yield of large-volume blood cultures in patients with early Lyme disease.

To improve yield, 6 3-mL plasma cultures (18 mL total) were established for adult patients with early Lyme disease associated with erythema migrans. Borrelia burgdorferi was recovered from the blood of 22 (44.0%) of 50 evaluable patients. The recovery rate per plasma culture and the frequency of positive results for plasma cultures for individual patients were consistent with a level of spirochetemia of approximately 0.1 cultivable cell/mL of whole blood. Our findings suggest that, if further improvements in the yield of blood cultures are possible, they probably will depend on enhancing the s

Quantitative assessment of cerebral blood volume by single-photon emission computed tomography.

We implemented a technique for measuring regional cerebral blood volume using single-photon emission computed tomography and in vivo technetium-99m-labeled red blood cells and then evaluated it in nine normal human volunteers (controls) and seven patients with bilateral occlusion or severe stenosis of the internal carotid artery. We also measured regional cerebral blood flow using single-photon emission computed tomography and intravenous xenon-133 in the same subjects. We studied regional cerebral blood flow, regional cerebral blood volume, and their ratio before and after the intravenous inj…

Blood volume distribution during head-up tilt induced central hypovolaemia in man.

We evaluated regional electrical impedance (Z degree) at 2.5 and 100 kHz to separate intra- and extracellular fluid changes and correlated Z degree over the thorax (TI) to relative changes in the central blood volume (CBV) induced by head-up tilt. In nine experiments head-up tilt resulted in normotensive central hypovolaemia associated with a 3.7 +/- 0.4 Ohm (mean +/- SE) increase in TI100 kHz after 60 min. In 24 experiments pre-syncopal symptoms were induced after 43 +/- 2 min, when TI100 kHz had increased 4.2 +/- 0.2 Ohm. Head-up tilt instantly decreased the activity of technetium labelled e…

[Left ventricular volume curve analysis using gated blood pool emission computed tomography].

Analysis of the left ventricular volume curve was performed using gated blood pool emission computed tomography (SPECT) in six patients with old myocardial infarction (MI), five with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), three with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and five normal controls (N). Image collection was synchronized with the QRS complex, and each cardiac cycle was divided into nine to 10 frames. In each frame, left ventricular volume was determined based on the number of voxels above the threshold level (50% cut-off level), and the volume curve was fitted to the third harmonics of Fourier

Splenic blood flow and intrasplenic platelet kinetics in relation to spleen volume.

The relationship between the splenic blood flow and the intrasplenic platelet kinetics on the one hand, i.e. the two factors which govern the size of the exchangeable splenic platelet pool, and the spleen size on the other were assessed in 21 patients afflicted with haematologic disorders and variable splenomegaly. The splenic blood flow and intrasplenic platelet kinetics were measured using 111In-labelled platelets and compartmental analysis of their equilibration between circulating blood and splenic pool; the spleen size was determined by scintigraphy using 99mTc-labelled stannous colloid.

Blood volume of nonsplenectomized and splenectomized cats before and after acute hemorrhage.

Blood volume (BV) was determined in awake, nonsplenectomized (NSPX) and splenectomized (SPX) cats before and after hemorrhage (6 ml/kg). Each NSPX cat had a determined BV at least 10 ml/kg greater than the same cat after splenectomy. The mean BV of SPX cats was 43.4 +/- 8.94. ml kg (4.3% of body weight). The calculated RBC masses of NSPX and SPX cats were 17.0 +/- 4.07 and 12.2 +/- 1.12 ml/kg, respectively. Each NSPX cat had apparent RBC masses of 5 ml/kg greater than that of the same cat after splenectomy was done. At 1 hour after a hemorrhage, the BV and RBC masses determined in SPX cats wer…
