Infection with canine vector-borne pathogens was evaluated in dogs from four different regions of Costa Rica by PCR. Demographic data, clinical signs, packed cell volume values, and the presence of tick infestation were recorded for each dog. Forty seven percent (69/146) of the dogs were infected with at least one pathogen and 12% were co-infected with two pathogens. Ehrlichia canis was detected in 34%, Anaplasma platys in 10%, Babesia vogeli in 8%, and Hepatozoon canis in 7.5% of the blood samples. No infection was detected with Leishmania spp. in blood, skin scrapings or conjunctival swabs.

BACKGROUND: Due to limited documentation on vector-borne pathogens of companion animals in Namibia, a country-wide, multi-site field study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of these pathogens in domestic dogs.
METHODS: Samples of whole blood and serum from 375 dogs in 15 towns across eight regions were analysed. Vector-borne pathogens were screened by light microscopic examination of blood smears, point-of-care serology, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Haematology and serum biochemistry analyses were also performed.
RESULTS: Collectively, the SNAP® 4Dx® Pl

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Current nucleic acid tests (NAT) for blood donor screening use plasma as the test sample and, consequently, cannot detect virions bound to blood cells of infected donors. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA and infectious virions have been detected in association with the cellular components of blood of patients with active liver disease; however, studies comparing HCV viral loads in whole blood and plasma have generated contradictory results. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of HCV in different compartments of the peripheral blood from HCV-infected

As a consequence of the September 2001 terrorist events, programs to protect against further such acts including potentially the use of biological warfare agents have been launched in the USA and elsewhere. As part of these initiatives, Vaccinia virus was procured for the pre-emptive vaccination of key personnel against smallpox as well as population-wide protection after an eventual exposure. The introduction of this live virus into a population at a relatively large scale represents a theoretical challenge for the safety of the blood supply, and potentially for plasma for fractionation. While developing a new protein removal test for the quality control of surgical instrument cleaning, it was noted that alcohol firmly binds blood to stainless steel. Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease is one of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) that has been transmitted between humans and chimpanzees by electroencephalogram electrodes, previously 'sterilized' using ethanol and formaldehyde. Although ethanol has a bactericidal action, it also binds protein to metal. Prion proteins found in TSE are thought to be the causal agents of spongiform disease and it is likely that these protein

UNLABELLED: As common parasites in the wild, ticks significantly limit the population growth of wild giant pandas and hinder the process of reintroducing captive giant pandas into their natural habitats. Research on microbial communities and pathogens in ticks infesting giant pandas is limited, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation. To thoroughly investigate the microbial communities in giant panda-infesting ticks, particularly potential pathogens, we analyzed 246 ticks collected from the ears of wild-living giant pandas using 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing. We found that

Canine vector-borne diseases are caused by pathogens transmitted by arthropods including ticks, mosquitoes and sand flies. Many canine vector-borne diseases are of zoonotic importance. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of vector-borne infections caused by Dirofilaria immitis, Ehrlichia canis, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma spp. and Leishmania infantum in a dog kennel in Argeș County, Romania. Dog kennels are shelters for stray dogs with no officially registered owners that are gathered to be neutered and/or boarded for national/international adoptions by various public or p

In Central and Eastern Europe, wolf populations have been increasing over the last two decades, recolonizing areas from which the species had been previously exterminated. As wolves are still recovering after years of persecution by humans, recognizing pathogens infecting this species, including tick-borne infections, is crucial for its conservation. On the other hand the high mobility of wolves and their frequent contacts with humans, dogs, and other domestic species make them a potentially important zoonotic reservoir. In this paper, we used molecular methods to determine the prevalence of t

Vector-borne diseases represent a major health challenge, both because of the complexity of their control, their common zoonotic nature, or the pathology they can cause in the individual. In tropical areas, surveillance of these diseases is even more important, since the activity of vectors is usually continuous throughout the year. To develop effective prophylaxis and surveillance programs, it is important to know the identity and prevalence of these pathogens as well as their distribution in a given territory. In Guadeloupe, a French archipelago located in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbea

BACKGROUND: Cats can be carriers of infected arthropods and be infected with several vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) but there is limited knowledge about their pathogenic role in cats. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of some feline vector-borne agents by molecular technique and to characterize the hematological findings associated with these infections in a cat population from Bangkok Thailand.
RESULTS: PCR was positive with at least one pathogen in 237 out of 372 subjects (63.7%), with prevalence of 39.5% (147/372) for Babesia spp., 36.9% (137/372) for hemoplasmas and 3.2% (12/372) f

BACKGROUND: Despite their close association with human dwellings, the role of synanthropic rodents in the epidemiology of vector-borne infections is seldom studied. The aim of the present study was to compensate for this lack of information, by the molecular investigation of vector-borne bacteria in peridomestic rodents and their ectoparasites.
FINDINGS: Fifty-two rodents (mainly house mice and brown rats) were caught alive in buildings and checked for blood-sucking ectoparasites; followed by molecular analysis of these, together with spleen samples, for the presence of vector-borne agents. H

Ticks are hematophagous arthropods, and their blood feeding on vertebrate hosts is essential for their development. The vertebrate blood contains high levels of free iron that can react with oxygen in ticks, resulting in the production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), one of the reactive oxygen species. Peroxiredoxins (Prxs), H2O2-scavenging enzymes, take on an important role in the ticks' oxidative stress coping mechanism. Ticks also transmit several disease-causing pathogens, including tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), in animals and humans. Therefore, the control of ticks and tick-borne pat

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) pose a major hindrance to livestock production in countries with limited resources. Effective prevention and management of TBDs require a thorough understanding of disease vectors and pathogens. However, there is limited information on studies of bovine tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) using molecular methods in Malawi. This study aimed to detect TBPs of cattle populations in southern Malawi, which has the largest cattle population in the country.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 220 blood samples from apparently healthy cattle were collected in six districts, and w

Tick-borne pathogens, particularly Babesia and Theileria species, are major threats to cattle production, causing economically significant diseases such as babesiosis and theileriosis. In this study, a real-time SYBR Green PCR assay was developed to detect Babesia and Theileria species in hard ticks (N = 65) and cattle blood samples (N = 143) from Thailand. Using primers targeting the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene for Babesia and the nuclear 18S rRNA gene for Theileria, the assay measured specific melting temperatures (Tm) for each species. The results showed distinct Tm values for Babesia b

Directed blood donations from family members are frequently desired for pediatric patients. A reduced risk for transfusion-transmitted diseases could not be proved. There are indications that recommendation of directed blood donation could oblige members of risk groups for HIV or hepatitis infection to donate blood since their voluntariness is not guaranteed and the possibility of self-exclusion is omitted. In some instances it may be necessary to perform directed blood donations from relatives because of immunological or medical principles, e.g. transfusion of maternal platelets in neonatal a

Introduction: Nucleic acid tests for blood donor screening have improved the safety of the blood supply; however, increasing numbers of emerging pathogen tests are burdensome. Multiplex testing platforms are a potential solution. Methods: The Blood Borne Pathogen Resequencing Microarray Expanded (BBP-RMAv.2) can perform multiplex detection and identification of 80 viruses, bacteria and parasites. This study evaluated pathogen detection in human blood or plasma. Samples spiked with selected pathogens, each with one of 6 viruses, 2 bacteria and 5 protozoans were tested on this platform. The nucl
