Combined oral contraceptives and body weight: do oral contraceptives cause weight gain? A primate model.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine if oral contraceptive (OC) use affects body weight, body composition and metabolism in primates. METHODS: Reproductive-age female rhesus monkeys of normal and obese BMI were studied to document baseline weight stability, then treated continuously with an OC (dosed to achieve equivalent human serum levels for a 30 µg ethinyl estradiol/150 µg levonorgestrel preparation) for 237 days. Monkeys were monitored for changes in body weight, levels of physical activity (measured by a triaxial Actical accelerometer), food/caloric intake, percent body fa

Animal models for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates and infants-at-risk (IAR).

In this study, the body weight changes seen in rat dams and brain and body weights seen in pups as sequelae of either an overt or a hidden form of chronic protein deprivation have been examined. In the overt model, the 6% casein-diet pups showed SGA brain and body weight deficits and irreversible central and peripheral chemical changes at birth. In contrast, the hidden form of prenatal deprivation did not result in brain and body weight deficits in the 8% casein-diet pups at birth, but their SGA-like irreversible peripheral and central chemical profiles categorizes them as IAR-neonates. In cro…

Physical activity and body weight: associations over ten years in the CARDIA study. Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Hypothesis 1--sustained changes in physical activity are inversely related to changes in body weight. Hypothesis 2-those who attenuate weight gain because of a temporary increase in physical activity (PA) may maintain a lower body weight over time. METHODS: Data were from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study, a cohort of black and white men and women, aged 18-30y at baseline, who attended up to five examinations over a 10y period (n=5,115 at baseline). Longitudinal associations between physical activity and body weight changes were assessed, adjustin…

Progestin-only contraceptives: effects on weight.

BACKGROUND: Progestin-only contraceptives (POCs) are appropriate for many women who cannot or should not take estrogen. Many POCs are long-acting, cost-effective methods of preventing pregnancy. However, concern about weight gain can deter the initiation of contraceptives and cause early discontinuation among users. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to evaluate the association between progestin-only contraceptive use and changes in body weight. SEARCH METHODS: Through May 2013, we searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL, POPLINE, LILACS, ClinicalTrials.gov, and ICTRP. The 2010 search also included EMB

Significant Dry Weight Reduction after Transition from Peritoneal Dialysis to Hemodialysis.

INTRODUCTION: Dry weight management in dialysis patients is crucial but often subjective, primarily based on symptoms. Due to continuous fluid removal in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and intermittent ultrafiltration in hemodialysis (HD), symptom-based assessments may be biased, leading to varying results. Surprisingly, no direct comparison of dry weight changes between PD and HD has been conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of transitioning from PD to HD on body weight and related clinical parameters. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 127 stable PD patients who trans

Evaluation and management of body composition changes in cancer patients.

Wasting in cancer patients has long been recognized as a condition that adversely affects cancer patients' quality of life, treatment tolerance, and oncological outcomes. Historically, this condition was mainly evaluated by changes in body weight. However, this approach is not quite accurate because body weight is the overall change of all body compartments. Conditions such as edema and ascites can mask the severity of muscle and adipose tissue depletion. Changes in body composition assessment in cancer patients have historically been underappreciated because of the limited availability of mea

Effectiveness of breath acetone monitoring in reducing body fat and improving body composition: a randomized controlled study.

When attempts to lose body fat mass frequently fail, breath acetone (BA) monitoring may assist fat mass loss during a low-carbohydrate diet as it can provide real-time body fat oxidation levels. This randomized controlled study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of monitoring BA levels and providing feedback on fat oxidation during a three-week low-carbohydrate diet intervention. Forty-seven participants (mean age = 27.8 ± 4.4 years, 53.3% females, body mass index = 24.1 ± 3.4 kg m-2) were randomly assigned to three groups (1:1:1 ratio): daily BA assessment with a low-carbohydrate diet, body
