Patients' Preferences for Bone-Anchored Prostheses After Lower-Extremity Amputation: A 2-Center Discrete Choice Experiment in The Netherlands (PREFER-BAP-1).

BACKGROUND: The rising popularity and use of a bone-anchored prosthesis (BAP) involving an osseointegrated implant for patients with lower-limb amputations experiencing socket-related issues have led to increased interest in the measurement of clinical and functional outcomes. However, the value of BAP treatment characteristics from the patient perspective has not yet been investigated. This study aimed to determine the relative importance of specific BAP characteristics, and the effect of complications in quality-of-life (QoL) points and monetary utility decrement (loss [€]), using a 2-center

Hearing rehabilitation in congenital aural atresia using the bone-anchored hearing aid: audiological and satisfaction results.

CONCLUSION: The BAHA (bone-anchored hearing aid) remains the most reliable method of auditory rehabilitation for patients with congenital aural atresia and improves hearing outcome and quality of life in these patients who are otherwise unable to benefit from traditional hearing aids. New techniques are being developed, such as fully implantable hearing devices, and will have to prove their efficacy and safety in this indication. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the audiological results and patient satisfaction after rehabilitation of congenital aural atresia using the BAHA. METHODS: Sixteen patients

Sleeping implant in the temporal bone: report of a case with 20-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge of the long-term fate of "sleeping" or nonloaded implants in the temporal bone. PURPOSE: This article describes the fate of a fixture installed in the temporal bone that remained unloaded for 20 years. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 25-year-old male with hemifacial microsomia had three osseointegrated implants installed for an auricular episthesis and bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) in the left temporal bone in 1988. Two of the implants for the ear episthesis were activated the same year, but the fixture for the hearing aid was not uncovered until 2008. When t

[Mid-Term Clinical Results after Open Rotator Cuff Reconstruction in Double-Row Technique with Titanium Anchor Screws].

BACKGROUND: The double-row rotator cuff repair is discussed controversially. Despite improved biomechanical properties, reduced re-tear rates and higher costs, no significant difference compared to single-row fixation in the clinical results is found. Mid-term results of an open double-row fixation with titanium anchor screws are presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 237 patients (m = 142, f = 95, median age: 56.3 years) were operated in 2007 with this technique by the senior author (M. G.). Preoperatively, 2 years and 4,5 years postoperatively a subjective shoulder score (SSG) with follow-up rate

Radiological and clinical evaluation of stemless anatomical shoulder arthoplasty Affinis Short™ (Mathys) with a minimum follow-up of 5 years.

INTRODUCTION: Stemless shoulder implants appeared on the market in 2003. The interest of this type of anatomic shoulder prosthesis is a better adaptation of the implant to the humeral anatomic characteristics and humeral bone preservation. These implants enabled an easier restoration of the rotation centre of the humerus, eliminating the problem of diaphyseal humeral offset, but few publications at long term are related. Therefore we did a retrospective investigation aiming to analyse signs of humeral and glenoid loosening and to assess the clinical results obtained using anatomic stemless sho

Implantation of a bone-anchored annular closure device in conjunction with tubular minimally invasive discectomy for lumbar disc herniation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive techniques for lumbar discectomy have been recommended as superior to open techniques due to lower blood loss, lower rates of infection and shorter recovery. There are, however, concerns that this approach does not sufficiently remove the herniated nuclear material, thus leaving the patient susceptible to reherniation requiring reoperation. The purpose of this study was to examine the safety and viability of an annular closure device in limiting reherniation and reoperation in a cohort of patients undergoing minimally invasive lumbar discectomy with the assistanc

Minimal invasive pocket technique for magnet bone implant hearing aid without fixation.

INTRODUCTION: The BAHA (bone-anchored hearing aid) Attract is a magnetic transcutaneous bone conduction device anchored into the temporal bone. The standard surgical technique for BAHA Attract is a multi-tools time-consuming process, which requires a large cutaneous incision. The objective of this study is to describe and test the feasibility of a minimally invasive pocket (MIP) technique for Magnet Bone Implant Hearing Aid (MBIHA) with a modified magnet of BAHA Attract without fixation and without any tissue reduction. We use a 3-cm vertical skin incision and a subperiosteal pocket. METHOD:

Heterogeneity of Patients' Preferences for Bone-Anchored Prostheses After Lower-Extremity Amputation (PREFER-BAP-2): A Latent Class Analysis of a Discrete Choice Experiment in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a bone-anchored prosthesis (BAP) previously expressed preferences regarding (i.e., indicated the importance of) 5 treatment attributes: change in quality of life (QoL), short- and long-term complications, implant survival, and out-of-pocket contributions (costs). However, preference heterogeneity is unclear. We aimed to identify latent preference subgroups, quantify attribute importance per subgroup, and describe background characteristics associated with each subgroup. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment to reveal preferences for BAP characteristics among 247 pati

Novel Minimal Access Bone Anchored Hearing Implant Surgery and a New Surface Modified Titanium Implant, the Birmingham Experience.

BACKGROUND: Bone anchored hearing implants (BAHI) are widely used and highly successful, accompanied with a high level of patient satisfaction across most techniques. A large UK teaching hospital switched from the previously used wide diameter titanium fixture and drilling system to the novel minimally invasive technique and laser ablated titanium implant. Before this change the rates of fixture failure and skin problems necessitating abutment change were 1% each. METHODS: Retrospective case note review of consecutive BAHI patients drawn from an electronic database between January 2015 and Oc

Berberine promotes peri-implant osteogenesis in diabetic rats by ROS-mediated IRS-1 pathway.

Accompanying with diabetes mellitus-induced osteoporosis (DM-OS), diabetic patients show poor peri-implant osteogenesis after implantation for dentition defect. Berberine (BBR), a candidate oral hypoglycemic agent, is a promising agent for treating DM-OS. In this study, BBR was applied on DM rats and high-glucose-cultured bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) to investigate its therapeutic mechanism on DM-OS, thus laying a theoretical basis for the future application of BBR in implant restoration. Phenotypes were assessed in the DM rats after 4 w of gavage with BBR. Furthermore, BMSCs were cultu

Interventions for replacing missing teeth: zygomatic implants for the rehabilitation of the severely atrophic edentulous maxilla.

RATIONALE: Dental implants are widely used to replace missing teeth but require sufficient bone for support. In people with severe maxillary (i.e. upper jaw) bone loss, zygomatic implants provide an alternative to bone augmentation by anchoring in the cheekbone instead of the upper jaw. Potential advantages include avoiding bone grafting and enabling immediate or early placement of a fixed prosthesis. However, the procedure is technically demanding and may be associated with serious complications. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of zygomatic implants for the rehabilitation of people with se

The Transfemoral and Transhumeral OPRA (Osseoanchored Prostheses for the Rehabilitation of Amputees) Osseointegration Technique.

BACKGROUND: The transfemoral or transhumeral Osseoanchored Prostheses for the Rehabilitation of Amputees (OPRA) osseointegration technique is indicated in patients with transfemoral or transhumeral amputations who have difficulty with use of a conventional socket and traditional prosthesis. Augmentations to the procedure, such as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and/or a regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI), serve to enhance function (in the case of TMR) and/or improve residual-limb neuropathic pain (in the case of combined TMR and RPNI) in the same patient population. Comparative outcome analysis of malpositioned and properly positioned fixation groups after hamstring autograft ACL reconstruction with femoral cross-pin fixation.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using soft tissue grafts has been gaining in popularity. Cross-pin fixation is used frequently, and its principle of fixation is an expansion mechanism. However, some malpositioned cases have been reported, and these malpositions may cause poor outcomes. Our aim was to compare the stability and clinical results between malpositioned and properly positioned cases. From November 2003 to December 2007, 41 patients were enrolled in this study. We divided these patients into malpositioned and properly positioned subgroups. The malpositioned group was

Better performance with bone-anchored hearing aid than acoustic devices in patients with severe air-bone gap.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A study performed in the 1990s with analogue linear hearing aids showed that in patients with mixed hearing loss and an air-bone gap that exceeded 25 to 30 dB, speech perception was better with a bone-anchored hearing aid (Baha) than with a conventional behind-the-ear (BTE) device. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether this conclusion applies to today's digital BTEs with feedback cancellation and whether the crossover point still occurs at an air-bone gap of 25 to 30 dB. STUDY DESIGN: Case control. METHODS: Experienced unilateral Baha users with
