Post-lesion yawning and thalamotomy site.

Yawning during hyperventilation occurred in certain patients post-thalamotomy. It was found that all of the lesions which elicited yawning (during the routine recording of electroencephalograms) were localized to the medial portion of the center-median nucleus. Yawning was noted to persist up to 3(1/2) years post surgery. Another group of patients who yawned when hyperventilated were patients with a history of a recent head injury who showed post-traumatic behavioral changes. Patients in both groups were young. There was no direct relationship between yawning and EEG abnormality. It was sugges

Prognostic value of neonatal CT scans in asphyxiated term babies: low density score compared with neonatal neurological signs.

Twenty-five asphyxiated term babies were investigated in order to evaluate the prediction of their neurodevelopmental outcome by means of computerized tomography (CT) as compared to neurological symptoms during the neonatal period. Low density (LD) areas, thought to represent hypoxicischaemic lesions, were assessed quantitatively by means of a LD score based on the extent and degree of LD, the total score ranging from 0-36. Neonatal scans were defined according to the time span elapsed between asphyxia and CT as (1) early CT (day 1-7, n = 15), and (2) intermediate CT (day 9-23: n = 14; day 29:

Taurine counteracts the neurotoxic effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease associated with oxidative stress, damage to biomolecules such as DNA, and neuroinflammation. Taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid widespread in the brain, has neuroprotective properties that might prevent tissue injury and DNA damage induced by chronic hyperglycemia. We evaluated the effects of chronic taurine treatment on oxidative stress parameters, DNA damage and inflammatory markers in the frontal cortex, and hippocampus of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Diabetic rats displayed increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA damag

A Comprehensive and Advanced Mouse Model of Post-Traumatic Epilepsy with Robust Spontaneous Recurrent Seizures.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of epilepsy in military persons and civilians. Spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRSs) occur in the months or years following the injury, which is commonly referred to as post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). Currently, there is no effective treatment or cure for PTE; therefore, there is a critical need to develop animal models to help further understand and assess mechanisms and interventions related to TBI-induced epilepsy. Despite many attempts to induce PTE in animals, success has been limited due to a lack of consistent SRSs after TBI. We present a c

[The current conception of the unconscious - empirical results of neurobiology, cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research].

The influence of the unconscious on psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy: a comprehensive concept of unconscious processes based on empirical evidence. The theory of the Unconscious constitutes the basis of psychoanalysis and of psychodynamic therapy. The traditional description of the Unconscious as given by Freud is of historical significance and not only gained widespread acceptance but also attracted much criticism. The most important findings of neurobiology, the cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research in relation to the Unconscious are compared with this traditiona

The parietal lobe as a sensorimotor interface: a perspective from clinical and neuroimaging data.

Lesion studies show a wide range of sensorimotor functions that can be selectively disturbed in patients with parietal lobe damage. This is illustrated by the selective impairment of unimodal or polymodal sensorimotor transformations in patients with apraxia. These clinically apparent deficits of goal-directed motor behavior are complimented by more subtle sensorimotor transformation disorders such as mirror agnosia and ataxia that can only be disclosed by special tests. Imaging studies further exemplify the prominent role of the parietal cortex as a sensorimotor interface and provide new info

Fetal heart rate observations in the brain-damaged infant.

The objective of this study was to describe the fetal heart rate patterns and underlying pathophysiologic changes in the brain-damaged fetus. Fetuses with brain damage from hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy do not manifest uniform fetal heart rate patterns. However, these fetuses do show distinct fetal heart rate patterns that permit categorization based on their admission heart rate, subsequent changes in their baseline rate; and neonatal findings. Based on the observations of infants brain damaged in utero because of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, the intrapartum fetal management will depend

Baclofen for chronic hiccups.

Chronic hiccups is a rare occurrence but can be debilitating for the patient. Successful intervention is seldom reported. The present case is a young adult who had severe almost continuous hiccups for 3 years after placement of a feeding gastrostomy and Nissen fundoplication. Within weeks of initiation of baclofen treatment, the hiccups ceased. Recurrences of hiccups have responded to increases in baclofen dosage.

Behavioral assessment and treatment of acquired visuoperceptual disorders.

Visuoperceptual deficits are common sequelae of damage to either hemisphere of the brain, but are typically more pronounced following injuries involving the right cerebral hemisphere. Common visuoperceptual disorders include visual field cuts, hemi-inattention and hemi-spatial neglect, hemi-perceptual deficits, and gaze and visual pursuit disturbances. A number of behavioral interventions have been developed to teach patients to compensate for acquired visual deficits. Studies addressing assessment and treatment issues in this area are reviewed, and future directions for research are outlined.

Some observations on the use of the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Ability in adults with head injury.

Current research specifies the varied cognitive and psychoeducational deficits in the adult with head injury, and the clinical assessment of this population is widespread, though often only traditional intellectual measures are used. This article provides descriptive data in the first reported study using the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Ability (WJTCA) (Woodcock & Johnson, 1977) in an outpatient sample of 39 adults with closed head injury. The study also addressed (a) the relationships between the various cognitive clusters of the WJTCA and a measure of injury severity (coma duration)

Brain lesions in alcoholics. A neuropathological study with clinical correlations.

Among 8735 autopsies performed during a 5-year period at Ullevål Hospital in Oslo there were 70 cases of Wernicke's encephalopathy (0.8%) and 152 cases of alcoholic cerebellar atrophy (1.7%). Cerebellar atrophy was found in 26.8% of all examined alcoholics. Twenty-two of the cases with Wernicke's encephalopathy were active (acute and subacute) and 48 were inactive (chronic). Examination of the clinical records showed that stupor and coma were the dominating symptoms in active cases. A pure Korsakoff's psychosis with a selective memory defect was present in about one-third of the cases with ina

Effect of leucine administration on creatine kinase activity in rat brain.

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a metabolic disorder biochemically characterized by the accumulation of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) and their branched-chain keto acids (BCKA) in blood and tissues. Neurological dysfunction is usually present in the patients, but the pathophysiology of brain damage is still obscure. Considering that brain energy metabolism is possibly altered in MSUD, the main objective of this study was to determine creatine kinase activity in the brain of rats subjected to acute and chronic administration of leucine. Chronic hyperleucinemia was induced by subcutaneou

Chronic hypertension aggravates heat stress induced cognitive dysfunction and brain pathology: an experimental study in the rat, using growth hormone therapy for possible neuroprotection.

Hyperthermia following heat stress results in profound brain edema formation and damage to the central nervous system (CNS). However, whether acute or chronic diseases such as cardiovascular, endocrine, or metabolic ailments further influence the vulnerability of human populations to heat-related deaths is still unclear. In this investigation, we examined the effect of hyperthermia on chronic hypertensive rats. The influence of growth hormone (GH) as a therapy to attenuate brain dysfunction was also evaluated. Subjecting rats to 4 h of heat stress at 38 degrees C in a biological oxygen demand

Wernicke encephalopathy and ethanol-related syndromes.

Ethanol causes diverse neurologic conditions caused by acute and chronic brain damage. This review provides an overview of Wernicke encephalopathy and other ethanol-related brain changes, such as chronic brain atrophy, Marchiafava-Bignami disease, osmotic demyelination syndrome, chronic hepatic encephalopathy, and acute alcohol withdrawal. As clinical symptoms of this spectrum of diseases have nonspecific neurologic alterations, radiologists should have current radiologic information and understand the imaging findings pertaining to the pathophysiology to support diagnosis.

Minimising neonatal brain injury: how research in the past five years has changed my clinical practice.

With improving neonatal survival for extremely premature babies, the challenge for neonatology is to improve outcome of surviving babies. This review concentrates on best evidence emerging in recent years on prevention of brain damage by early administration of drugs as well as avoidance of induced brain damage by hyperventilation and dexamethasone therapy given postnatally for chronic lung disease.
