To assess the role of growth factors in proliferative disorders of the breast, we assayed breast cyst fluid from 70 patients for calcitonin-related peptides. Cyst fluids (5.4 +/- 6.6 ml) (mean +/- SD) (n = 70) contained 10,499 +/- 8272 pg/ml of gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)-like immunoreactivity in 66 of 70 samples. Tamoxifen is increasingly used in adjuvant endocrine therapy for postsurgery breast cancer patients and in chemoprevention for high-risk patients. On the contrary, in men, the presence of a benign apocrine cyst is an exceedingly rare occurrence, with only a few cases reported in the literature. Gross cystic breast disease (GCBD) is common in women, especially in the age range between 35 and the menopausal years. BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer arising from an endometriotic cyst in a postmenopausal woman under tamoxifen therapy is rare.
CASE: We herein report the case of a 67-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer, taking tamoxifen citrate 20 mg/day for 4 years, who underwent an operation for left ovarian tumor. The postoperative histological diagnosis was endometrioid adenocarcinoma in an endometriotic cyst with a gradual transition of the degree of cellular atypia noted from typical endometriotic epithelium, to atypical endometriosis, and finally to adenocarcinoma.

Serial plasma levels of the glucoprotein tumor markers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and gross cyst disease fluid protein (GCDFP) were evaluated in 83 patients undergoing treatment for predominant osseous metastases from breast carcinoma. Analysis of biopsies from breast cancer patients demonstrated that GCDFP-15 (gross cystic disease fluid protein-15) is a specific immunocytochemical marker of primary and secondary apocrine breast tumors.
