All three belonged to serovar copenhageni, and tests using monoclonal antibodies showed that these three strains were extremely similar. In the following weeks, five pregnant female monkeys had miscarriages; two of them had antibodies against …

Repeated breeding of the same mare seemed related to the availability or activity of the mare, since such mares more frequently followed and positioned themselves in the vicinity of the stallion. Most of the interferences by a mare which involved keeping the stallion …

Three breeding lines, originating from dogs with SLE, have been established. Two lines were initiated by mating a female with SLE with a normal male. The third line resulted from a mating of two affected dogs. Brother-to-sister matings have reached the third generation in each line. In addition, backcross and outcross matings were carried out. More than one-third of the autopsied dogs had thymic abnormalities. The commonest lesion was a lymphoid follicle; the thymus of one dog contained multiple granulomas, and in one animal a reticulum cell sarcoma of the thymus was found. Multiple serologica…

In sheep, gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) can cause disease, reduced feed intake, and nutritional deficiencies. To counteract GINs, anthelmintics are widely used although it is well known they may enter the environment impacting ecosystems. In addition, anthelmintics resistance has rapidly developed and consequently, alternative approaches are crucial for profitable and sustainable sheep production. The occurrence of resistant individuals is mainly due to their intrinsic genetic diversity; therefore, the implementation of breeding plans for resistant animals may provide a promising strategy …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the breed-characteristic features of cervical intervertebral disc disease (C-IVDD) and associated vertebral instability in small-breed dogs and to present the concept of intervertebral disc degeneration and associated instability stage, method of diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.
ANIMALS: In total, 307 client-owned dogs with C-IVDD treated with spinal cord decompression with or without vertebral stabilization (2000-2021).
METHODS: Information on age, sex, affected sites, stabilized sites, diagnostic methods for vertebral instability and outcomes were retrieved. The pa

Global warming causes spring onset to advance, especially in the Arctic. Migratory animals may respond by advancing their phenology or colonising colder areas where spring starts later. The role of climate change in range expansion can be both driving (making traditional areas suboptimal) and facilitating (making new areas suitable). Recently, Pink-footed Geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) from Svalbard showed extreme range expansion by colonising the colder Novaya Zemlya as breeding ground, involving a new migration route. We examine potential costs and benefits associated with breeding in this new…

Dogs use their teeth for a multitude of tasks and, as such, it is vital for their health and wellbeing that their oral health is maintained. Persistent deciduous teeth (PDT), those that fail to fall out at the appropriate time, are associated with malocclusion (misaligned bite), soft tissue trauma and increased risk of periodontal disease. The objective of the current study was to perform a retrospective analysis of veterinary medical data to understand the effect of dog breed size, dog breed and body weight on prevalence of PDT. Medical records collected from almost 3 million dogs visiting a

Salmonella is one of the most hazardous diseases in poultry farms. Markedly, the application of active immunostimulants is illustrated as potential protective agents against infection in poultry farms. Thus, this work aimed to explore inter- and intra-breed variation in response to acute and subchronic Salmonella enteritidis infection in two-layer breeds (one commercial [Hy-line strain] and another native [Fayoumi breed]). Besides exploring the possible protective effect of a commercial immune modulator (STIMULAN) on the two breeds during the acute infection. The ELISA antibody titer in sub-ch

In recent decades, conservation of local poultry breeds has gained relevance to preserve genetic resources adapted to low-input systems and to enhance their valorization. This study addresses a key knowledge gap by providing a comprehensive characterization of the endangered Murciana chicken breed, native to southeastern Spain. We jointly evaluate recent population dynamics, conservation framework, morphology and morphometrics, growth patterns, and reproductive and productive traits. Data includes census and pedigree records, standardized morphological assessments, growth modeling, and product

This study investigated the effects of the silvopastoral (SP) rearing system compared with a conventional (CV) indoor system, along with the influence of broiler breed (fast-growing, FAST vs. slow-growing, SLOW), on carcass traits (yields), meat quality, myopathy incidence, fatty acid profile, oxidative stability (TBARS), and sensory attributes. A 2 × 2 factorial design was conducted, using 250 birds per treatment, with 5 replicate pens (50 birds/pen). For data collection, 10 birds were selected from each pen for processing, giving a total of 5 replicates and 50 samples per treatment. FAST con

A six-year-old, neutered male mixed-breed dog was presented with jaundice, fever, and abdominal pain. A bacterial cholecystitis was diagnosed and subsequently treated with antimicrobials. However, follow-up evaluation showed inadequate disease control. Over time, the dog gained weight and developed dermatological changes indicative of an underlying endocrinopathy. Subsequent diagnostics confirmed hypothyroidism, necessitating levothyroxine supplementation. In the course of the treatment of hypothyroidism the dog developed complete resolution of the bacterial cholecystitis. This case report desc

Investigations of detection canine performance across breeds has yielded mixed results, often reporting behavioral differences observed by researchers or reported by handlers through surveys. The present study tested 34 narcotics detection canines; 25 Belgian Malinois and 9 German Shepherds to determine if there were any differences between the breeds in overall rate of detection accuracy and the number of false alerts in searches. As previously determined, results of the present study support the continued use of narcotic detection canines for law enforcement agencies (i.e., positive alert pe

BACKGROUND: In dry and semi-arid areas, salinity is the most serious hazard to agriculture, which can affect plant growth and development ad … ood security in arid regions. Considerable improvements in tolerance mechanisms can be employed for breeding vegetables with boosted yield performance under salt stress. A conventional breeding method demands exhaustive research work in crops, while new techniques of molecular breeding, such as cutting-edge molecular tools and CRISPR technology are now ava …

There is a need to develop cost-effective and non-invasive approaches to sample large populations to evaluate the disease status of breeding herds. In this study we assessed the detection of the M. hyopneumoniae genetic material in environmental surfaces and air of farrowing rooms, and skin (udder, snout and vagina) of lactating sows at weaning, in farms having different M. hyopneumoniae infection status (negative, positive sub-clinically infected and positive clinically affected). Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae was detected in air, air deposition particles, dam and stall surfaces of the positive cl…

Breeding for short tails in sheep may represent a good measure in order to avoid the continuation of tail docking in lambs. Since the ancestor of domestic sheep, the mouflon, has a short, narrow tail, it may be assumed that longer tails are a result of domestication. Previous studies on the heritability of tail length in domestic sheep were able to show values of 0.38 to 0.77, depending on the breed. Breeding for short tails must however ensure the avoidance of spinal malformations and those of neighboring structures. Until breeding progress is achieved, management measures may reduce the nega…

A 3-year-old female mixed-breed dog was referred with a 2-day history of serious dyspnea, coughing, lethargy, anorexia, and a low-grade right anterior lameness. At presentation, the dog had an increased respiratory rate, dull heart and lung sounds, and cyanotic mucous membranes. It was hyperthermic and slightly dehydrated. Laboratory findings showed mild neutrophilia with a left shift, while serum biochemistry variables were in the normal range. However, urinalysis revealed mild proteinuria and rare erythrocytes and leukocytes on sediment examination. Thoracic radiographs showed a diffuse mixe
