Contrast magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of periaortic bronchogenic cyst.

A 39-year-old woman who had suffered from intermittent left back pain for 7 months was diagnosed as having a tumor in the posterior mediastinum to the left of the seventh thoracic vertebra. It was attached to the descending aorta and to a rib. Preoperative contrast magnetic resonance imaging strongly suggested that the tumor was a cystic lesion. We resected the tumor, and it was revealed to be a bronchogenic cyst. After 7 months' follow-up, the patient is asymptomatic and without complications. Bronchogenic cysts are rare developmental abnormalities of the primitive foregut and seldom arise in…

Mediastinal bronchogenic cyst manifesting as a catastrophic myocardial infarction.

Congenital bronchogenic cysts of the lung and mediastinum develop from the ventral foregut during embryogenesis. These cysts are often incidental radiologic findings in adults, but patients can be seen with symptoms of chest pain, cough, dyspnea, or any combination of these. Acute presentations are unusual and have rarely been reported. We present the unique case of a 36-year-old man seen with an acute coronary syndrome and sudden hemodynamic collapse. The patient sustained a massive and ultimately fatal myocardial infarction, compression of the left main coronary artery by a bronchogenic cyst…

A high cervical intradural extramedullary bronchogenic cyst. Case report.

This article describes a 16-year-old male patient, otherwise healthy, with intractable suboccipital pain due to an intradural, extramedullary bronchogenic cyst at C1 level. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging scans showed an extramedullary cystic lesion on the right anterolateral side of the spinal cord at C1 level. No other vertebral, spinal cord, or cutaneous abnormality was associated. The patient underwent posterolateral resection of the C1 bony ring on the right side, followed by complete removal of a cyst microsurgically. Histology suggested that the mass, with its conten…

Mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. A cause of upper airway obstruction.

Although bronchogenic cysts may involve the mediastinum, they have rarely been responsible for significant upper airway obstruction. We describe a young man who had a rapidly expanding cervical mass due to the migration of a mediastinal bronchogenic cyst. Flow-volume loops confirmed the presence of a variable intrathoracic obstruction. The patient rapidly developed respiratory failure requiring urgent intubation and surgical resection.

Intralobar pulmonary sequestration with bronchogenic cyst: a case report.

Intralobar pulmonary sequestration (ILS) with concurrent bronchogenic cyst represents a rare congenital malformation often diagnosed incidentally. We present a 48-year-old asymptomatic female whose routine Computed Tomography (CT) revealed a left lower lobe mass with aberrant systemic arterial supply (thoracic aortic branch) and a separate mediastinal cyst. Thoracoscopic resection confirmed ILS (48.11 mm × 37.45 mm solid-cystic lesion with vascular anomalies) and bronchogenic cyst (27.91mm × 24.16 mm). This case demonstrates three critical findings: (i) Contrast-enhanced CT with vascular recon…

Gastric bronchogenic cyst mimicking adrenal Phaeochromocytoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are rare foregut-derived cystic malformations that can develop within the respiratory tract. While they are commonly found in the mediastinum or lungs, their occurrence at ectopic sites, such as the stomach, is extremely rare. This case report highlights the challenges in diagnosing a gastric bronchogenic cyst and the potential for misdiagnosis a pheochromocytoma, especially when associated with hypertension. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male presented with a 6-day history of headache and nausea, and was found to have elevated blood pressure. Imaging s…

Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst, typically situated in the subdiaphragmatic region, is a rare congenital benign developmental abnormality arising from dysplasia of the foregut and abnormal budding of the tracheobronchial tree. Due to its low incidence, there are limited reports regarding this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: Four retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts near the left adrenal gland were identified without accompanying clinical symptoms. One case was misdiagnosed as an adrenal tumor prior to surgery, while the others were diagnosed as retroperitoneal cysts of uncertain o…

Congenital bronchogenic cyst: From prenatal diagnosis to postnatal management.

OBJECTIVE: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital abnormalities, and usually asymptomatic until adulthood. We present a fetus prenatally diagnosed with a bronchogenic cyst, experiencing compression symptoms immediately after birth and underwent thoracoscopic surgery at 14 days old. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old primigravida had a suspicion of fetal tracheal cyst. Prenatal ultrasound scan revealed a cyst near the trachea at 23 weeks' gestation. Fetal MRI defined a cystic lesion in the upper mediastinum, displacing surrounding vessels. A 3,940 g girl was delivered vaginally at 38 weeks' gestation.…

Intradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst: report of a rare new case.

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are congenital abnormalities commonly found within the mediastinum. Diaphragmatic location is extremely rare. We present a woman in her 60s with an asymptomatic intradiaphragmatic BC. The patient underwent complete surgical resection with primary closure of the left hemidiaphragm. BCs should remain a differential diagnosis of any soft-tissue mass in the region of the diaphragm. Complete surgical resection is recommended even in asymptomatic patients to avoid complications such as infection, rupture, bleeding or malignant transformation.

Bronchogenic cyst or lung cancer. Only biopsy can tell.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations which derive from primitive ventral foregut. They are usually observed in intrathoracically. A fifty year old male was admitted for the investigation of a three month chest pain. Computed tomography scan of the thorax revealed a lesion around the esophagus and left stem bronchus. Endobronchial ultrasound with convex probe and a 19G needle biopsy revealed a bronchogenic cystic which was removed with video assisted thoracic surgery. Initial radiologic assessment although was thought to be lung cancer because of the smoking habit it turned out …

A rare cardiac tumor: Bronchogenic cyst of interatrial septum.

Intracardiac bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital tumors, which rarely become symptomatic. We describe a rare case of bronchogenic cyst in the atrioventricular node. A 36-year-old man with third-degree atrioventricular block was referred to our hospital. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a cystic mass at the right atrial aspect of the low interatrial septum. He underwent surgical resection of the mass, and a permanent epicardium pacemaker was implanted. His postoperative course was uneventful. Microscopic examination showed a cyst surrounded by ciliated columnar epithelium and part…

Intramural esophageal bronchogenic cyst mimicking achalasia in a toddler.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital malformations of the tracheobronchial tree. We describe a 20-month-old male who presented with persistent non-bilious emesis; manometry and imaging were consistent with esophageal achalasia. During a planned laparoscopic Heller myotomy, an intramural bronchogenic cyst was discovered in the anterior esophagus at the level of the gastroesophageal junction and successfully resected with resolution of his symptoms.
