In vitro anti-adenoviral activities of ethanol extract, fractions, and main phenolic compounds of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel.

BACKGROUND: Adenovirus causes a number of diseases in human, and can cause serious infection in severely immunosuppressed individuals. Despite the seriousness of adenovirus infection, there is no definitely approved anti-adenoviral therapy. Many studies have shown that compounds derived from medicinal plants have antiviral activity. Therefore, this study evaluated in vitro anti-adenoviral activity of ethanol extract, fractions, and main phenolic compounds of pomegranate peel. METHODS: The ethanol extract of pomegranate peel was prepared with maceration method and fractionated by consecutive l

Producing alcohol and salt stress tolerant strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae by heterologous expression of pprI gene.

INTRODUCTION: Ethanol is considered a comparatively clean biofuel, and its large scale production has been a long time concern. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has proven to be the suitable microorganism for large scale ethanol production, but production of other alcohols like butanol and using lignocellulosic substrates is restricted due to lacking tolerance toward toxicity of alcohols, and compounds released from substrates. This study aimed to produce a tolerant strain by using pprI gene of Deinococcus radiodurans. MATERIAL AND METHOD: pprI gene was introduced into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To ev

UV-Initiated Ring Opening Polymerization of l-Lactide Using a Photobase Generator.

Photoinitiated ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide (L-LA) using a photobase generator (PBG) able to release 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD) is reported. Polymerization using the PBG with ketoprofenate counteranion (TBDH+.keto-) was studied in dichloromethane either in the presence or in the absence of 1-butanol as initiator. In both cases, full monomer conversion was reached at room temperature after 10 min of irradiation at 254 nm. In the presence of 1-butanol, linear poly(L-LA) chains (PLA) were obtained, as confirmed by 1H NMR and MALDI-TOF analyses. The polymerization was we

Short-range interactions within molecular complexes formed in supersonic beams: structural effects and chiral discrimination.

One- and two-color, mass-selected R2PI spectra of the S1<--S0 transitions in the bare chiral chromophore R-(+)-1-phenyl-1-propanol (R) and its complexes with a variety of alcoholic solvent molecules (solv), namely methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, S-(+)-2-butanol, R-(-)-2-butanol, 1-pentanol, S-(+)-2-pentanol, R-(-)-2-pentanol, and 3-pentanol, were recorded after a supersonic molecular beam expansion. Spectral analysis, coupled with theoretical calculations, indicate that several hydrogen-bonded [R.solv] conformers are present in the beam. The R2PI excitation spectra of [R.

Differential effects of long-chain alcohols in long- and short-sleep mice.

Observations that the long-sleep (LS) and short-sleep (SS( mouse lines differ in their depressant response to barbiturates, and that the difference between lines becomes greater as lipid solubility increases, prompted this investigation of the effects of alcohols that differ in lipid solubility. Results indicate that LS and SS mice differ significantly in their sleep time responses to propanol, butanol, and 3-methyl butanol, as well as ethanol: their hypothermic responses showed a similar pattern, but only the response to ethanol differed significantly between lines. For both sleep time and hy

Solubility of straight-chain and branched alkyl barbiturates in straight-chain alcohols.

The solubilities of a series of chemically related barbiturates, including some medically useful ones as well as phenobarbital, were determined at 25 degrees in the straight-chain alcohols methanol through butanol. The solubility values are given in both milligrams per milliliter and the mole fraction notation. The solubility in methanol was the highest and decreased nonlinearly for the solubility in 1-butanol. In several cases, mole fraction solubility gave shouldering or peaking as a function of the carbon number of the solvent. This series of barbiturates was broken down into two subsets of

A framework to mitigate the risk of chemical leukoderma: Consumer products.

Chemical leukoderma is an acquired depigmentation of the skin caused by repeated exposure to specific agents damaging to epidermal melanocytes. Case reports of chemical leukoderma have been associated with some consumer products. To date, there are no well-accepted approaches for evaluating and minimizing this risk. To this end, a framework is presented that evaluates the physical and chemical characteristics of compounds associated with chemical leukoderma and employs structure-activity relationship (SAR) read-across and predictive metabolism tools to determine whether a compound is at increa

Compensation of Ambient Variations in a Temperature-Modulated SnO2 Gas Sensor-Based Electronic Nose for Accurate Discrimination of Structurally Similar Volatile Organic Compounds.

The cross-sensitivity and limited selectivity of metal-oxide gas sensors in accurately identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) become challenging under climatic interferences, particularly when ambient temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) fluctuate. This challenge was addressed through a large-scale experimental campaign comprising 972 measurements for training and 567 experiments for validation and repeatability assessments, conducted over seven months using an electronic nose (e-nose). This study constituted the first comprehensive investigation of nine structurally similar VOCs-

A novel alcohol dehydrogenase in the hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon Hyperthermus butylicus.

Hyperthermus butylicus is a hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon that produces 1-butanol as an end product. A thermostable alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) must be present in H. butylicus to act as the key enzyme responsible for this production; however, the gene that encodes the ADH has not yet been identified. A novel ADH, HbADH2, was purified from a cell-free extract of H. butylicus, and its characteristics were determined. The gene that encodes HbADH2 was demonstrated to be HBUT_RS04850 and annotated as a hypothetical protein in H. butylicus. HbADH2 was found to be a primary-secondary ADH capable of

Neutrophil transepithelial migration in response to the chemoattractant fMLP but not C5a is phospholipase D-dependent and related to the use of CD11b/CD18.

In Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients, the numbers of neutrophils recovered from stool directly correlates with the severity of disease, implying that neutrophils in the lumen contribute to the tissue destruction; therefore, it is important to understand the mechanisms behind transintestinal epithelial migration. Neutrophil transintestinal epithelial migration to fMLP is appreciated to be CD11b/CD18 integrin (Mac-1)-dependent, while we recently reported that migration to C5a is Mac-1-independent. Here, we investigated whether phospholipase D (PLD), a signaling molecule linked to c

Zebrafish as a new model for rhododendrol-induced leukoderma.

Idiopathic leukoderma is a skin disorder characterized by patchy loss of skin pigmentation due to melanocyte dysfunction or deficiency. Rhododendrol (RD) was approved as a cosmetic ingredient in Japan in 2008. However, it was shown to induce leukoderma in approximately 20,000 customers. The prediction of cytotoxicity, especially to melanocytes in vivo, is required to avoid such adverse effects. Since the use of higher vertebrates is prohibited for medicinal and toxicological assays, we used zebrafish, whose melanocytes were regulated by mechanisms similar to mammals. Zebrafish larvae were trea
