The C-reactive protein for detection of early infections after lumbar microdiscectomy.

The tendency for short hospitalization after lumbar microdiscectomy implies the need for early confirmation or disapproval of serious postoperative infections such as spondylodiscitis or deep wound infections. The C-reactive protein (CRP) is a well-known screening parameter for monitoring postoperative infectious complications in other fields. Our objective was to establish the diagnostic significance of CRP-in comparison with ESR and WBC-for monitoring infectious complications after lumbar microdiscectomy. Over a 15 months period we studied prospectively a homogeneous group of N = 400 patient…

C reactive protein and prealbumin as markers of disease activity in shigellosis.

To evaluate serum C reactive protein (CRP) and prealbumin concentrations as markers of disease activity in shigellosis this study serially measured serum concentrations of CRP and prealbumin in 39 patients infected with Shigella spp, and a comparison group of 10 patients infected with Vibrio cholerae serotype 01. On admission, patients with shigellosis had significantly higher median concentrations of CRP (109 v 5 mg/l; p < 0.01) and significantly lower median concentrations of prealbumin (16 v 23 mg/l; p < 0.01) than did patient with cholera. Among Shigella spp infected patients, CRP concentr

[Burkitt's lymphoma with granulocytosis and a high level of C-reactive protein].

A case of Burkitt's lymphoma with granulocytosis including immature cells and a high level of C-reactive protein (CRP) is reported. The activity of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) was detected in the sera, although its activity was not detected in the supernate of the cultured lymphoblasts. The lymphoblasts stimulated production of IL-1 alpha from human umbilical endothelial cells. Therefore, the lymphoblasts infiltrating bone marrow may have stimulated production of IL-1 alpha from bone marrow stroma cells, and IL-1 alpha may have induced granulocytosis and a high level of CRP.

[Complement activation by C-reactive protein in various inflammatory diseases (in vitro)].

C-reactive protein (CRP)-mediated complement activation can be tested on cryostat sections of the rat kidney by indirect immunofluorescence (C3-IFT). In contrast to a positive C3-IFT regularly obtained with sera of patients with polymyalgia rheumatica, we found unexpectedly negative C3-IFT results in 5/18 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and in 11/14 patients with bacterial endocarditis in spite of elevated CRP and normal hemolytic complement in these sera. Differential diagnostic and pathophysiological aspects of these findings are addressed.

C-reactive protein in assessing antimicrobial treatment of acute pelvic inflammatory disease.

Serial serum C-reactive protein (CRP) determinations were used in the evaluation of antimicrobial treatment of acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) as proven by laparoscopy and endometrial biopsy or microbiologic findings in the upper genital tract in 36 women. Sixteen patients were treated with ciprofloxacin and 20 with doxycycline plus metronidazole. The mean CRP levels did not differ significantly in patients with severe and moderate salpingitis in comparison with mild salpingitis on admission or during treatment, nor was there any significant difference between the mean CRP levels in pa…

Predicting deterioration of treated tuberculosis by corticosteroid reserve and C-reactive protein.

Eighteen patients with recently diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis were studied for factors which could predict, at the outset, reactions to treatment. Abnormally low corticosteroid responses to tetracosactrin were seen in some but not all of the patients who deteriorated while on treatment. Those who deteriorated transiently or died had pre-treatment C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations above 20 mg/l, which then persisted. As previously observed, those who responded unfavourably were older, had extensive disease and presented with hypoalbuminaemia and hyponatraemia.

Serious bacterial infections. C-reactive protein as a serial index of severity.

The clinical course of 72 septicemic episodes or focal severe bacterial infections was monitored by daily measurements of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in 59 children beyond the neonatal period, 19 of whom were immunocompromised. CRP was determined quantitatively by an immunoturbidimetric method from a finger prick sample until either clinical recovery occurred and antimicrobial therapy was discontinued or until the death of the patient. The primarily elevated CRP levels (greater than or equal to 20 mg/l) usually increased about for a day but then decreased rapidly, provided the patient recov…

Rat resistance to schistosomiasis: platelet-mediated cytotoxicity induced by C-reactive protein.

In rats infected with the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, the concentration of C-reactive protein in the serum increases after the lung stage of infection and is at its highest at the time of terminal worm rejection. The peak of platelet-mediated cytotoxicity induced by infected serum that has been heated (and is free of immunoglobulin E) as well as the time course for the development of platelet cytotoxic activity in infected rats was found to be correlated with the concentration of C-reactive protein. Rat and human platelets treated with homologous serum obtained during an acute phase of infla…

The presence and possible significance of C-reactive protein in rheumatoid inflammation.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is capable of binding to a variety of ligands with subsequent complement fixation in vitro. By this means CRP may contribute to the inflammatory process in some diseases. Elevated levels of CRP were demonstrated in synovial fluids (SF) from patients with a variety of inflammatory arthritides. The contribution of CRP to inflammation in SF was investigated. Sera and SF from patients with rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis were examined for the presence of ligand bound CRP. We were unable to demonstrate significant amounts of bound CRP, either as increased molecular …

Genetic pleiotropy highlights immune mechanisms that link insomnia and C-reactive protein.

Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder with growing evidence implicating immune and inflammatory processes. Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation, is frequently observed in individuals with poor sleep, yet the genetic basis of this relationship remains unclear. This study aims to characterize the shared genetic architecture between insomnia and CRP using large-scale genomic data. CRP levels were significantly elevated in 130 611 individuals with insomnia compared with 327 375 controls in the UK Biobank. Genome-wide genetic correlation, pleiotropic analysis, coloc…

Longitudinal patterns of C-reactive protein values in calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease.

OBJECTIVE: Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is a crystalline arthritis with inflammatory and non-inflammatory manifestations. We investigated longitudinal patterns of C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with different inflammatory CPPD phenotypes. METHOD: Participants in a single-centre CPPD registry were categorized as having acute calcium pyrophosphate (CPP) crystal arthritis only (acute CPP), chronic CPP inflammatory arthritis only (chronic CPP), or both acute & chronic CPP. We included patients with one CRP (mg/L) value from the date of CPPD diagnosis to March 2024. We use…

Association of C-reactive protein with osteoarthritis: Evidence from a retrospective analysis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic inflammatory joint disease that severely affects the quality of life in middle-aged and older adults. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a classical inflammatory biomarker; however, its cross-sectional association with the presence of OA remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between CRP and other blood markers with prevalent OA in a hospital-based population. A total of 8652 participants were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the association between CRP and …

C-reactive Protein Apheresis: A Novel Treatment Approach in Acute Necrotising Pancreatitis.

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis is a severe condition associating with high morbidity and mortality. In most cases, supportive therapy is the only available therapeutic option. Herein, we report a case of a 29-year-old male who presented with severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis caused by hypertriglyceridemia, who consequently developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and multi-organ failure. We used an off-label C-reactive protein apheresis to target the sterile inflammatory reactions additional to optimal supportive therapy with invasive ventilation, prone positioning, continuous veno-ve…
