Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an infection caused by Candida species that affects millions of women every year. Although Candida albicans is the main cause of VVC, the identification of non-Candida albicans Candida (NCAC) species, especially Candida glabrata, as the cause of this infection, appears to be increasing. The development of VVC is usually attributed to the disturbance of the balance between Candida vaginal colonization and host environment by physiological or nonphysiological changes. Several host-related and behavioral risk factors have been proposed as predisposing factors for…

Candida species are major causes of mucosal and invasive infections, leading to substantial morbidity and mortality. Despite the development of new classes of antifungal drugs, mortality in patients with systemic candidiasis remains high. Host-Candida interaction plays an important role in effective elimination of the pathogen. Genetic studies have rendered important insights into antifungal host defense and have identified potential targets for adjunctive therapy. In this article, the authors review the genetic variations in the host defense to Candida and their implications for the treatment…

INTRODUCTION: In the last few decades, the survival of children with haematology-oncological malignancies has increased due to more aggressive chemotherapy regimens. This has led to an increase of fungal infections causing significant morbidity and mortality in these patients. Hepatosplenic candidiasis is a disseminated candida infection that affects most commonly the liver and spleen, although other organs may be involved.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 13 paediatric patients diagnosed with hepatosplenic candidiasis from January 2002 to February 2010 in our paedi…

Renal candidiasis is an increasingly common condition affecting predominantly premature infants receiving neonatal intensive care or term infants with urogenital tract anomalies. Multiple risk factors are usually present. Although rare, some infants develop an obstructive uropathy due to fungal balls, and this requires prompt detection and intervention to preserve kidney function. The management of obstructive renal bezoars is challenging and not well summarised in the past. This is mainly due to scarce literature confined to case reports or case series only. This review clarifies various defi…

Candidemia is the fourth most common bloodstream infection, with Candida albicans being the most common causative species. Success in reducing the associated morbidity and mortality has been limited by the inadequacy and time delay of currently available diagnostic modalities. Focusing on host response to infection, we used a murine model to develop a blood gene expression signature that accurately classified mice with candidemia and distinguished candidemia from Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. Validation of the signature was achieved in an independent cohort of mice. Genes represented in th

A case of disseminated candidosis in a premature newborn twin I (26th weeks of pregnancy) is reported. A severe mycotic infection of the organs, especially the kidneys was present. Even Candida in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans cells could be demonstrated. Twin II also suffered a Candida infection but in contrast to twin I she survived after therapy. Candida infection of twins is rarely reported in the literature.

Age alone is not usually sufficient for the development of disease due to Candida, but it appears to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Mucocutaneous Candida infections such as thrush and denture stomatitis are associated with local and mechanical factors. A rare and sight-threatening complication of cataract surgery is Candida endophthalmitis. Systemic Candida infections are becoming more common due to increasing use of immunosuppressive drugs and the increasing risk of nosocomial candidiasis in the intensive care unit. Candiduria is increasingly common in older patients wi…

Candida zeylanoides caused candidiasis as tinea cruris in 4 cases. Candida zeylanoides were characterized by good growth of the strain in malt medium, potato dextrose agar and Sabourard's agar. Their colony was milky white and greasy with smooth surface. The diameter of the colony reaches 12 mm within a week. As candida type pseudohyphae but not hyphae, they do not produce ascospore and bolospore. Carbon sources fermentation showed positive results. Nitrogen sources assimilation agar (KNO3) negative, arbutin agar negative, nonvitamin medium positive. G+C mol% value of their DNA was 51.24. Anim…

This report describes a young male patient who had enamel hypoplasia, persistent oral candidiasis, skin hyperpigmentation, and vitiligo, and was thus suspected of having candidiasis endocrinopathy syndrome. The clinical and laboratory investigations employed to confirm the diagnosis are detailed.

Eleven patients with acute non-lymphocytic leukemia developed hepatosplenic candidiasis following the termination of chemotherapy. Five who did not receive amphoteicin B (AMPH) died of liver failure, whereas the other six who received AMPH and/or miconazole or fluconazole were cured. The features of hepatosplenic candidiasis included prolonged high fever not responsive to antibiotics and hepatomegaly with right-sided hypochondrial pain developing after severe neutropenia. Even if the neutropenia recovered, these symptoms did not subside. In addition, elevation of the serum alkaline phosphatase…

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis is a very rare disease. We reported two newborn infants in whom generalized skin eruption was noted at birth, characteristics of erythematous papules and pustules. The eruption involved head, face, neck, trunk and extremities. Candida albicans was demonstrated on direct KOH smear, by surface fungal cultures and skin biopsy. The disease implies a congenital intrauterine infection and is different from neonatal candidiasis which manifests as thrush, diaper dermatitis. The route of infection is ascending in congenital cutaneous candidiasis. The skin eruption is us…

Systemic candidiasis in intravenous drug abusers (IVDA) is a new syndrome caused by Candida albicans and characterized by the sequential development of skin, eye, and osteoarticular lesions, which together form a typical clinical picture. We studied 30 patients with suggestive skin lesions: papules, nodules, and pustules in hair-bearing areas, particularly the scalp and beard area, associated with hair invasion by candidal hyphae. Ocular and osteoarticular involvement and presence of candidemia in some of the patients suggested blood-borne colonization of C. albicans. The infection has been re…

The diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal candidiasis by brush cytology was studied in two groups. In eight immunosuppressed patients clinically suspected to have candidiasis, fungal infection was confirmed on six occasions, and a diagnosis of herpetic oesophagitis was established in the other two cases. Among 482 gastric and oesophageal brushings clinically unsuspected candidiasis was found on a further 12 occasions. Coexisting abnormalities including carcinoma, lymphoma, and postradiation oesophagitis were also identified by brushing. Of the 18 patients with cytologically confirmed candidiasis, en…

A patient with acquired chronic oral and vaginal candidiasis resistant to topical and parenteral therapy was found to have impaired cell mediated immunity to Candida antigen and loss of skin test response to tuberculin (Mantoux). Treatment with Candida-active transfer factor produced clinical remission lasting 1 year and restitution of in vitro and in vivo immune parameters. Relapse occurred while receiving a second lot of transfer factor from the same donor. Subsequent treatment with levamisole was associated with onset of agranulocytosis.

Inoculation into foot-pads of guinea-pigs of a living suspension of Candida albicans together with Complete Freund's Adjuvant, provoked a hypersensitive state, characterized by: 1) positive skin tests; 2) direct degranulation of peritoneal mast cells when exposed in vitro to the antigen; and 3) homologous "mast cell sensitizing antibodies" detected by the "indirect mast cell degranulation test". The mast cell sensitizing antibodies were heat labile, and their activity could not be restored by complement.

Background/Objectives: Pediatric periodontal inflammation arises from complex host-microbe interactions. Beyond bacterial biofilms, fungal colonization-particularly by Candida albicans-is increasingly recognized as a contributor. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between fungal and bacterial colonization, host inflammatory mediators, and salivary parameters in children. It also aimed to identify salivary biomarkers that could be useful for the early diagnosis of oral candidiasis and periodontal inflammation. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 140 children…
