Cooling Effects on Capillary Sealing in CO2-Plume Geothermal Systems: Capillary Pressure Modeling and Leakage Assessment.

The CO2-Plume Geothermal (CPG) technology is an emerging approach that utilizes CO2 as a working fluid to simultaneously extract geothermal energy and achieve long-term underground carbon sequestration. The circulation of cold CO2 significantly lowers reservoir temperature and alters rock wettability, which threatens the long-term security of CO2 sequestration by weakening the capillary sealing capacity of caprock. To address this concern, we investigate the mechanisms by which cooling-induced wettability alteration affects the capillary sealing capacity of CPG caprock and quantitatively evalu

Comparison of capillary dried blood spot and capillary microtubes with venous immunoglobulin G levels for routine diagnostics.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with primary antibody deficiencies receiving immunoglobulin replacement therapy require frequent monitoring of immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels. Capillary IgG measurements from dried blood spots (DBS) or microtubes offer several advantages over samples obtained by venipuncture, including facilitating remote self-sampling. However, the validity of this alternative method is still unknown. We evaluated the comparability of IgG levels measured in venous samples with capillary blood samples collected on DBS cards and in microtubes. METHODS: Paired venous and capillary f

Carboxymethylchitosan covalently modified capillary column for open tubular capillary electrochromatography of basic proteins and opium alkaloids.

A novel open tubular (OT) column covalently modified with hydrophilic polysaccharide, carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) as stationary phase has been developed, and employed for the separations of basic proteins and opium alkaloids by capillary electrochromatography (CEC). With the procedures including the silanization of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS) and the combination of glutaraldehyde with amino-silylated silica surface and CMC, CMC was covalently bonded on the capillary inner wall and exhibited a remarkable tolerance and chemical stability against 0.1 mol/L HCl, 0.1 mol/L NaOH or some org

Hypoxia-induced acute changes in capillary and fiber density and capillary red cell distribution in the rat heart.

The influence of acute hypoxia (respiration gas 12%, 10%, and 8% O2 and asphyxia, respectively) on 1) the density of perfused capillaries and muscle fibers, and 2) the capillary red cell distribution was investigated in the left heart of anesthetized rats. To observe capillaries and fibers, fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled (FITC)-gamma-globulin and lissamine-rhodamine-B200-labeled (RB200) myoglobin were injected intravenously as labels of the perfused intravasal and the extracellular space, respectively. The hypoxic conditions were induced subsequently and maintained for 3 minutes. After thi…

Analysis of intact proteins with capillary zone electrophoresis coupled to mass spectromery using uncoated and coated capillaries.

Although, in general, the application of coated capillaries is recommended for the separation of intact proteins, bare silica capillary is still the most often used capillary due to its simplicity and cheapness. In this work, the performance of bare fused silica capillary for intact protein analysis was compared to that of different (dynamically coated polybrene (PB) and permanently coated linear polyacrylamide (LPA)) coated capillaries using capillary zone electrophoresis - mass spectrometry (CZE-MS). In cases where low pH (pH=1.8) was used in bare silica capillaries, good precision (0.56-0.7…

A novel in situ strategy for the preparation of a β-cyclodextrin/polydopamine-coated capillary column for capillary electrochromatography enantioseparations.

Inspired by the chiral recognition ability of β-cyclodextrin and the natural adhesive properties of polydopamine under alkaline conditions, in this study, a rapid and in situ modification strategy was developed to fabricate β-cyclodextrin/polydopamine composite material coated-capillary columns for open tubular capillary electrochromatography. The results of scanning electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, streaming potential, and electro-osmotic flow studies indicated that β-cyclodextrin/polydopamine was successfully fixed on the inner wall of the capillary column. This coating can be achieve

Capillary-free vascularized retina in patients with aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity and late retinal capillary formation.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical features, clinical course, and treatment outcomes after laser photocoagulation in infants with aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (APROP) and capillary-free zones in vascularized retina. METHODS: Six patients (12 eyes) with APROP and capillary-free zones in vascularized retina were retrospectively reviewed. Twelve eyes of six infants were included and were treated with laser photocoagulation for avascular retina and for capillary-free zones in vascularized retina, except for the posterior pole, and fundus findings were photographically-documented i

Capillary isoelectric focusing and affinity capillary electrophoresis approaches for the determination of binding constants for antibodies to the prion protein.

For the development of specific immunological assays, the binding of a specific antibody (Ab) to the target antigen (Ag) has to be relatively strong. In this study, we have utilized affinity capillary electrophoresis (ACE), a form of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) to determine the binding constant (Kb) of specific Abs against bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the healthy prion protein (PrPc), in buffer solutions at fixed pHs, approximating in vivo conditions. We have also utilized capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) to determine the complexity and recognition of the various isoforms of Pr

Acquired "tufted" angioma (progressive capillary hemangioma). A distinctive clinicopathologic entity related to lobular capillary hemangioma.

Three young patients affected by intradermal and subcutaneous vascular proliferations are presented. The lesions were acquired and developed as solitary or multiple erythematous patches and plaques in the upper thorax, neck, and scalp. Light-microscopic examination revealed a deep-seated vascular growth with a distinctly lobular pattern. Ultrastructural and immunocytochemical studies demonstrated the cellular proliferation to be composed of endothelial and perithelial cells, the latter predominating. These cases are interpreted as examples of the vascular disorder described as progressive capi

Relation of nailfold capillaries and autoantibodies to mortality in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon: a retrospective analysis.

The presence of abnormal nailfold capillaries and antinuclear antibodies (ANA) is associated with increased all-cause mortality in patients presenting with incipient Raynaud's phenomenon (RP). We conducted a retrospective analysis aiming to assess the association between abnormal nailfold capillaries, ANA, and mortality over a 20-year follow-up period. In 2958 patients with incipient RP without previously known connective tissue disease, nailfold capillaroscopies and laboratory tests for ANA and ANA-subsets were obtained. Of these, long-term follow-up data were available for 2922 patients. Ove…

Local angiogenic interplay of Vegfc/d and Vegfa controls brain region-specific emergence of fenestrated capillaries.

Fenestrated and blood-brain barrier (BBB)-forming endothelial cells constitute major brain capillaries, and this vascular heterogeneity is crucial for region-specific neural function and brain homeostasis. How these capillary types emerge in a brain region-specific manner and subsequently establish intra-brain vascular heterogeneity remains unclear. Here, we performed a comparative analysis of vascularization across the zebrafish choroid plexuses (CPs), circumventricular organs (CVOs), and retinal choroid, and show common angiogenic mechanisms critical for fenestrated brain capillary formation…

Advanced optical imaging reveals preferred spatial orientation of podocyte processes along the axis of glomerular capillaries.

Mammalian kidneys filter enormous volumes of water and small solutes, a filtration driven by the hydrostatic pressure in glomerular capillaries, which is considerably higher than in most other tissues. Interdigitating cellular processes of podocytes form the slits for fluid filtration connected by the membrane-like slit diaphragm cell junction containing a mechanosensitive ion channel complex and allow filtration while counteracting hydrostatic pressure. Several previous publications speculated that podocyte processes may display a preferable orientation on glomerular capillaries instead of a …

Delivery of VEGF and delta-like 4 to synergistically regenerate capillaries and arterioles in ischemic limbs.

Vascularization of the poorly vascularized limbs affected by critical limb ischemia (CLI) is necessary to salvage the limbs and avoid amputation. Effective vascularization requires forming not only capillaries, but also arterioles and vessel branching. These processes rely on the survival, migration and morphogenesis of endothelial cells in the ischemic limbs. Yet endothelial cell functions are impaired by the upregulated TGFβ. Herein, we developed an injectable hydrogel-based drug release system capable of delivering both VEGF and Dll4 to synergistically restore endothelial cellular functions…
