Neonatologist-Performed Echocardiography versus Pediatric Cardiologist for the Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Preterm Newborns.

Objective: Premature babies have a fragile circulatory system balance; therefore, rapid inter- vention may be needed in patients with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Echocardiography performed by a neonatologist can help to choose the best treatment option for newborns in a timely manner. The aim is to evaluate the performance of neonatologists in ductus assessment. Materials and Methods: Among the neonates born at the hospital, those diagnosed with PDA (n=40) under 32 weeks of gestational age were evaluated with echocardiography by a neo- natologist and a pediatric cardiologist. Gaps in knowledge and management of iron deficiency in heart failure: a nationwide survey of cardiologists in China.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) guidelines recommend routine testing for iron deficiency (ID) and, for those with ID, intravenous iron if the left ventricular ejection fraction is <50%. Guideline adherence to these recommendations by cardiologists in China is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: An independent academic web-based survey was designed and distributed via social networks to cardiologists across China. Overall, 1342 cardiologists (median age 34 years, IQR 30-39, 51% women) from all provinces of China completed this survey. More than half were unaware of the need to screen for ID in HF and…

Multiple Cutaneous Cancers in an Interventional Cardiologist: Predominance in Unprotected Skin Nearest the Radiation Source.

A 70 year-old interventional cardiologist, who worked in the cardiac catheterization laboratory for >35 years, developed multiple skin cancers in regions not conventionally covered by protective lead apparel. The majority of lesions were left-sided, representing cutaneous regions in closest proximity to the radiation source. Although skin not covered by lead apparel often receives frequent sun exposure, a known risk factor for skin cancer, malignancies resulting exclusively from sun exposure would not in most cases be expected to have a left-sided predominance. Additional research is warranted

Early diagnosis and management of cardiac manifestations in mucopolysaccharidoses: a practical guide for paediatric and adult cardiologists.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of hereditary disorders caused by lysosomal storage of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and characterized b … s in the clinical investigation of these patients. New treatments have led to an increased need for cardiologists to be on the lookout for MPS patients since they can significantly improve the lives of people with MPS if they suspect the diagnosis and refer them for enzyme replacement therapy or bone marrow transplantation.

Cardiologist and Diabetologist crosstalk in the era of cardiovascular outcome trials of novel glucose-lowering drugs.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to increase and cardiovascular (CV) diseases remain the leading cause of death in diabetic patients. Diabetologists and Cardiologists have to work together in order to provide the best management to these patients. After years of disappointing studies showing no reduction of CV events with strict glycaemic control, some of the novel glucose-lowering drugs (GLDs) seem to offer a new approach to tackle the problem, since the CV outcome trials (CVOTs-D) of liraglutide, semaglutide, empagliflozin and canagliflozin have demonstrated not only their CV safe…

Transcatheter bicuspid aortic valve replacement in Turner syndrome: A unique experience of interventional cardiologist.

A 69-year-old short-statured Turner syndrome (TS) patient with a history of poliomyelitis in childhood and moderate bicuspid aortic stenosis (BAS) reported worsening dyspnea and fatigue over six months. A repeat transthoracic echocardiogram revealed progression to severe aortic stenosis with dilated ascending aorta (AA). As part of the work-up for aortic valve replacement, the patient underwent cardiac catheterization, which revealed a severely calcified AV with an area of 0.5 sq. cm and a mean gradient of 37 mmHg. On coronary angiography, there was 70% stenosis of the proximal left anterior d

Age-Dependent Impact of Fluoroscopic Radiation on the Gender of Off-Spring: An International Survey of Cardiologists.

Background: Fluoroscopic radiation has been implicated in reducing the sex ratio (M:F) by potentially damaging the Y chromosome. We examined the effects of exposure to fluoroscopic radiation on gender of offspring of cardiologists across the world. Methods: An internet based survey was e-mailed worldwide to 8000 physicians who practice invasive electrophysiology and/or interventional cardiology. Survey questions included age, race, sub-specialty, hours of exposure to radiation, number of children, gender of off-spring, miscarriages and mutations and exposure to radiation prior to conception of…

Is treatment of feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy based in science or faith? A survey of cardiologists and a literature search.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common cardiac disease of cats. Treatment of HCM is usually directed at controlling signs of congestive heart failure (CHF), preventing occurrence or recurrence of systemic thromboembolism or delaying/preventing/reversing progression of subclinical disease. STUDY OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Despite the laudable goals of therapy, however, little objective evidence supporting therapeutic decisions has been published. We, therefore, hypothesized that cardiologists base their treatment strategies on information other than publish…

Management of cardiovascular risk in the peri-menopausal woman: a consensus statement of European cardiologists and gynaecologists.

Cardiovascular risk is poorly managed in women, especially during the menopausal transition when susceptibility to cardiovascular events increases. Clear gender differences exist in the epidemiology, symptoms, diagnosis, progression, prognosis, and management of cardiovascular risk. Key risk factors that need to be controlled in the peri-menopausal woman are hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obesity, and other components of the metabolic syndrome, with the avoidance and careful control of diabetes. Hypertension is a particularly powerful risk factor and lowering of blood pressure is pivotal. Hormon

Preferences of cardiologists and clinical geneticists for the future organization of genetic care in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: a survey.

In view of the increasing demands for genetic counselling and DNA diagnostics in cardiogenetics, the roles of cardiologists and clinical geneticists in the delivery of care need to be redefined. We investigated the preferences of both groups of professionals with regard to the future allocation of six cardiogenetic responsibilities in counselling and testing, using hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) as a prevalent model disease. In this cross-sectional survey, the participants were Dutch cardiologists (n = 643) and clinical geneticists (n = 60), all members of professional societies. Response r…

Consultation between cardiologists and generalists in the management of acute myocardial infarction: implications for quality of care.

BACKGROUND: The rapid expansion of managed care in the United States has increased debate regarding the appropriate mix of generalist and specialist involvement in medical care. OBJECTIVE: To compare the quality of medical care when generalists and cardiologists work separately or together in the management of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: We reviewed the charts of 1716 patients with AMI treated at 22 Minnesota hospitals between 1992 and 1993. Patients eligible for thrombolytic aspirin, beta-blockers, and lidocaine therapy were identified using criteria from the 1…

Barriers and facilitators for the uptake of the national INOCA recommendation among Dutch cardiologists: A survey study.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, the Dutch Society for Cardiologists (NVVC) published a national recommendation for diagnostics and treatment of Ischaemia with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries (INOCA), a historically underrecognized condition. In this study we identify determinants of implementation of the NVVC INOCA recommendation through a national survey among Dutch cardiologists. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, nationwide online survey among Dutch cardiologists, incorporating attitudinal statements derived from prior qualitative research and the Measurement Instrument for Determinants of In…

Core Competencies of the Modern Geriatric Cardiologist: A Framework for Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care in Older Adults.

Background: The rapid ageing of the cardiovascular population has profoundly transformed clinical practice, with an increasing proportion of patients presenting advanced age, frailty, multimorbidity, and functional vulnerability. Conventional cardiology models, largely derived from younger and selected populations, often fail to adequately address the complexity of cardiovascular care in older adults. Despite the growing development of cardiogeriatrics, the core competencies required for contemporary geriatric cardiology practice remain insufficiently defined. Methods: This narrative review sy
