Preventing maritime transfer of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae.

Organisms, including Vibrio cholerae, can be transferred between harbors in the ballast water of ships. Zones in the Caribbean region where distance from shore and water depth meet International Maritime Organization guidelines for ballast water exchange are extremely limited. Use of ballast water treatment systems could mitigate the risk for organism transfer.

[Nosocomial myiasis in Latin America and the Caribbean: an overlooked reality?].

Nosocomial myiasis is an infestation by fly larvae that occurs while a patient is hospitalized. To analyze the available information on nosocomial myiasis in Latin America and the Caribbean, a search was done for cases published in the last 52 years. Nine clinical cases were found for Brazil, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Honduras, and Jamaica. Two other publications mention 139 cases in El Salvador and some 32 in Colombia, respectively. The patients and environments described presented conditions that predispose to this type of infestation. Compulsory notification is not usually required for nos

Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma and Targeted Maternal Screening.

IMPORTANCE: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a rare but highly aggressive malignant disease caused by lifelong infection with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), typically acquired through mother-to-child transmission. In southwestern Japan, the world's highly documented HTLV-1 endemic region, maternal HTLV-1 screening and breastfeeding counseling have reduced vertical transmission. Because of the long latency between infection and disease, reductions in ATLL burden are expected to occur over time. In the US, HTLV-1 screening is limited to blood donors, while mother-to-child t

Identifying food environment policies and research needs in Latin America and the Caribbean: insights from the Community of Practice in Nutrition and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (COLANSA).

BACKGROUND: Nutrition-related health issues remain a significant public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where rapid transformations in food systems have contributed to increasing obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Government policies are key to shaping healthier food environments, but their implementation and evaluation vary widely across countries. This study aimed to identify national-level public policies that promote healthy food environments in the LAC region and to outline priority areas for research to strengthen their implementation, from the

The Relationships Between the Eco-Bio-Social Determinants of Dengue Epidemiology in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

The factors influencing dengue virus (DENV) transmission by the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are complex and related. The use of a systems thinking, Ecohealth approach for understanding the dynamic linkages between all the ecological, biological, and social (eco-bio-social) factors associated with DENV epidemiology is imperative to better understand the DENV epidemiological system (episystem). The aim of this scoping review was to summarize the evidence for the relationships between the eco-bio-social factors influencing DENV vector dynamics, transmiss

Factors constraining natural recovery of Diadema antillarum following a mass die-off: a case study near the island of Saba, Caribbean Netherlands.

After the mass mortality of 1983-1984, recovery of the keystone herbivore Diadema antillarum has been limited. Persistently low population densities reduced grazing pressure, leading to algal dominance on many Caribbean reefs. To understand recovery dynamics and support restoration, greater insight into factors constraining sea urchin population recovery is essential. We assessed D. antillarum settlement, predator density, shelter availability, and post-die-off recovery at four locations near Saba, Caribbean Netherlands, following the 2022 D. antillarum die-off. One location, an artificial roc

Variability of the trophic state in a coastal reef system associated with submarine groundwater discharge in the Mexican Caribbean.

Submarine groundwater discharges (SGD) have been associated with important sources of nutrients between the land and oceans that can generate eutrophication conditions. This study aims to analyze the behavior of nitrogen and phosphorus using the mixing curve method, to examine the variation of the trophic state using the Karydis Index, and to evaluate the δ15N in benthic organisms to trace the origin of nitrogen in neap tide (November) and spring tide (January) in the Manatí Cenote, and Nohoch-Teek reef lagoon in the Mexican Caribbean. Nitrogen and phosphate enrichment was in the Manatí Cenote

Structural violence and the uncertainty of viral undetectability for African, Caribbean and Black people living with HIV in Canada: an institutional ethnography.

Biomedical advances in healthcare and antiretroviral treatment or therapy (ART) have transformed HIV/AIDS from a death sentence to a manageable chronic disease. Studies demonstrate that people living with HIV who adhere to antiretroviral therapy can achieve viral suppression or undetectability, which is fundamental for optimizing health outcomes, decreasing HIV-related mortality and morbidity, and preventing HIV transmission. African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities in Canada remain structurally disadvantaged and bear a disproportionate burden of HIV despite biomedical advancements in H

Emergency Management Strategies and Antimicrobial Considerations for Nonmammalian Marine Vertebrate Penetrating Trauma in North America, the Caribbean, and Hawaii: A Review Article.

There are numerous emergency department visits in the United States for all types of marine animal injuries each year. These injuries may result in significant morbidity or mortality if not managed appropriately. Accurate identification of the offending species, thorough wound hygiene, and judicious use of antibiotics are important for preventing infections. This review aims to describe management strategies and antimicrobial considerations for nonmammalian marine vertebrate penetrating trauma in North America, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. A literature search was performed to identify studies on

Reductive Amination for LC-MS Signal Enhancement and Confirmation of the Presence of Caribbean Ciguatoxin-1 in Fish.

Ciguatera poisoning is a global health concern caused by the consumption of seafood containing ciguatoxins (CTXs). Detection of CTXs poses significant analytical challenges due to their low abundance even in highly toxic fish, the diverse and in-part unclarified structures of many CTX congeners, and the lack of reference standards. Selective detection of CTXs requires methods such as liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) or high-resolution MS (LC-HRMS). While HRMS data can provide greatly improved resolution, it is typically less sensitive than targeted LC-MS/MS
