Asterinides sp. an endemic stygobitic seastar from an anchialine cave and its interactions among prokaryotic communities.

Anchialine caves house a vast variety of organisms that support complex ecological relationships among themselves and their environment. The following study was made in the anchialine karst cave El Aerolito, found on Cozumel Island, Quintana Roo, Mexico. It explores the relationship between wall microbial mats and the diet of Asterinides sp., an endemic stygobitic seastar. Wall microbial mats inside the cave were sampled and the stomach microbiome of Asterinides sp. was obtained through regurgitation. Asterinides sp. sampling was made through the Catcher Collection Chamber (CCC), an innovative

Updated analysis of the Bronze Age population genetics from Bezdanjača Cave - the case of I2a1a male individuals.

This case report presents an updated interpretation of genetic and chronological data from human remains discovered in Bezdanjača Cave, a Bronze Age burial site located in the Lika region of Croatia. The cave contains a complex necropolis with at least 57 graves and up to 200 individuals, which indicates its use as a collective burial site during the Middle and Late Bronze Age. Based on ancient DNA analysis, 13 males were identified among 38 analyzed individuals, with the majority belonging to the Y-chromosome haplogroup R1b, commonly associated with Bronze Age populations. However, two indivi

Radiocarbon dating and chemical imaging of carbon black-based Paleolithic cave art in the Dordogne region (France).

Paleolithic parietal art in the Dordogne, Southwestern France, was known to present representations solely made with mineral coloring matters. We found a significant number of carbon black-based figures in the galleries of the Font-de-Gaume cave in Les Eyzies, Dordogne, Southern France [I. Reiche, Y. Coquinot, A. Trosseau, A. Maigret, Sci. Rep. 13, 22235 (2023)]. Further reflectance imaging spectroscopy allowed a precise noninvasive discrimination between manganese- and carbon-based blacks. Consequently, in the Dordogne region, direct dating of drawn or painted lines was unlocked. Dating parie

Cave evolution on repeat: reuse of the same genomic regions across lineages but not across traits in Astyanax mexicanus.

Similar traits repeatedly evolve across independent populations in response to similar environmental conditions. For many repeatedly evolved traits it is unknown if populations evolve similar traits through the same or different genetic mechanisms. To address this question, we leveraged the Mexican tetra fish, Astyanax mexicanus, which has evolved repeatedly through altering many traits including reduced sleep duration, eye degeneration, and metabolic shifts to accommodate limited nutrient availability. We defined whether shared or independent genetic architecture govern the repeated evolution

Cross-ecosystem engineers: the dual role of fruit bats in cave nutrient dynamics and landscape seed dispersal.

Bats provide key ecosystem services, yet their dual role in subterranean habitats remains understudied. Frugivorous species such as Artibeus planirostris can act both as seed dispersers in surface environments and as sources of organic matter in caves through guano deposition. We investigated these functions in Toca do Morrinho Cave (Bahia, Brazil), combining captive experiments and field monitoring to assess guano production, diet, deposition patterns, and seed fate. Bats consumed fruits from 11 plant species and produced an average of 3.24 g of dry guano per day. Most feces (91.1%) were depo

Case Report: transcavernous sinus resection of parotid carcinoma with perineural invasion to Meckel's cave and cavernous sinus.

BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary glands is a rare but aggressive malignancy known for perineural invasion (PNI), allowing tumor spread along cranial nerves to the skull base, Meckel's cave, and cavernous sinus. Cavernous sinus involvement has traditionally been considered inoperable due to the density of neurovascular structures. Recent advancements in skull base microsurgery and anatomical landmark-guided navigation have enabled radical tumor resection in carefully selected patients. OBJECTIVE: To describe a tailored pretemporal extradural transcavernous skull base

Lymphoma in Meckel cave mimicking trigeminal schwannoma - analysis of misdiagnosis causes and insights into imaging: Case report.

RATIONALE: Central nervous system lymphoma typically arises in the deep cerebral regions, while occurrence in the Meckel cave at the skull base is exceedingly rare, with fewer than 1 hundred cases reported globally. Lesions in this area are often misdiagnosed as trigeminal schwannomas or meningiomas. This report aims to enhance clinical recognition of this rare entity by presenting a meticulously analyzed case that was initially misdiagnosed as a trigeminal schwannoma due to overlapping radiological features. Through detailed clinicopathological correlation, we seek to identify key diagnostic

Lyssavirus Antibody Detection in Cave-Dwelling Bats on Cat Ba Island, Vietnam: Implications for Zoonotic Surveillance.

Southeast Asia is a biodiversity hotspot for bats that can carry lyssaviruses, causing zoonotic diseases. This study detects and quantifies IgG antibodies against Lyssavirus glycoproteins in cave-dwelling bat populations on Cat Ba Island, northern Vietnam, to determine their past exposure history and the prevalence of immune responses. Samples were collected from five caves, encompassing three families and five key species (Hipposideros armiger, H. alongensis, H. poutensis, Taphozous melanopogon, and Myotis pilosus). Using ELISA with the Platelia™ Rabies II kit,(Bio-Rad Laboratories, Marnes-la

Predicting balloon shape in percutaneous microcompression : an observational comparative analysis of Meckel's cave imaging and balloon morphology.

Achieving a pear-shaped balloon holds pivotal significance in the context of successful percutaneous microcompression procedures for trigeminal neuralgia. However, inflated balloons may assume various configurations, whether it is inserted into Meckel's cave or not. The absence of an objective evaluation metric has become apparent. To investigate the relationship between the morphology of Meckel's Cave and the balloon used in percutaneous microcompression for trigeminal neuralgia and establish objective criteria for assessing balloon shape in percutaneous microcompression procedures. Eptesicus nilssonii varangus subsp. nov. (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) from the Lower Pleistocene of the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

A new northern serotine bat Eptesicus nilssonii varangus subsp. nov. is described on the base of an incomplete skull and a mandibular fragment from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. This is the earliest record of the species. The presence of E. nilssonii (Keyserling et Blasius, 1839) in the Early Pleistocene bat assemblage of the Taurida cave indicates that this species lived in the south of Eastern Europe before its spreading into Central and Southeastern Europe.

The Consistency Between the Preoperative 3D-Reconstructed Meckel's Cave and the Intraoperative Balloon Results in Percutaneous Balloon Compression.

OBJECTIVE: To predict the volume and shape of the balloon before PBC by reconstructing the Meckel's cave (MC) and establishing a volumetric measurement model, supporting preoperative preparation and intraoperative decisions. METHODS: The clinical data of 31 patients with good therapeutic effects who underwent PBC are retrospectively collected, including preoperative MRI, the volume of contrast agent injected into the balloon, and intraoperative lateral X-ray images. The MC on the affected side of the 31 patients is reconstructed based on MRI using 3D Slicer, while the volume of the MC is calc

A Q fever outbreak among visitors to a natural cave, Bizkaia, Spain, December 2020 to October 2021.

We describe a large Q fever outbreak reported in Spain, including 108 cases, 53 with pneumonia and 27 requiring hospitalisations. The first cases were detected in February 2021 among rock climbers visiting a cave in Bizkaia, and the last case was detected in October 2021. Most cases were notified after the Easter holiday (April-May 2021). More males (63.9%) than females (36.1%) were infected (median ages: 42 (1-68) and 39 years (6-61), respectively). We detected Coxiella burnetii by PCR in faecal, dust and/or aerosol samples taken inside the cave in March 2021, and in dust and aerosol samples

Absolute configuration of cytotoxic anthraquinones from a Brazilian cave soil-derived fungus, Aspergillus sp. SDC28.

Microbial strains isolated from extreme and understudied environments, such as caves, are still poorly investigated for the production of bioactive secondary metabolites. Investigation of the ethyl acetate extract from the growth medium produced by the soil-derived fungus Aspergillus sp. SDC28, isolated from a Brazilian cave, yielded two anthraquinones: versicolorin C (1) and versiconol (2). The complete assignment of nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopic data of 1 and 2 was performed for the first time. Moreover, the yet unreported absolute configuration of both compounds was unam

Meckel's Cave Size Measured by Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Prognosis of Percutaneous Balloon Compression for Trigeminal Neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) is a safe and effective method to treat trigeminal neuralgia. Despite it is known that intraoperative balloon volume is crucial in the prognosis of PBC patients and correlates with Meckel's cave (MC) size, it is a lack of objective and valid criteria for intraoperative balloon volume of PBC. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the size of MC and the volume of a pear-shaped balloon in improving the prognosis of patients receiving PBC. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Patients were divided int

The Systematic Position of a Large Porcupine (Hystrix, Hystricidae, Rodentia) from the Pleistocene of Vietnam (Lang Trang Cave).

The dental remains of the porcupine from the Pleistocene deposits of the Lang Trang cave in northern Vietnam are described. Previously, this porcupine was identified as Hystrix brachyura Linnaeus, 1758 or H. indica Kerr, 1792. Based on the analysis of morphometric data, the systematic position of the form from Lang Trang and other large Pleistocene porcupines of Vietnam is determined as Hystrix kiangsenensis Wang, 1931.

First Finding of Etruscan Bear (Ursus etruscus, Ursidae, Carnivora) in the Crimea (Taurida Cave, Early Pleistocene).

A fragment of a bear skull with partially preserved dentition is descibed from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave (Crimea). The presence of P1-P3, the structure of P4, and sizes of the cheek teeth enable the identification of the specimen as Ursus etruscus Cuvier, 1823. The new find is the first in Crimea and the entire Russia and is of great interest due to rarity of this species in the Pleistocene of Eastern Europe.

Baseline susceptibility to alpha-cypermethrin in Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) from Lapinha Cave (Brazil).

BACKGROUND: Given the increase in cases of visceral leishmaniasis in recent years, associated with the socio-economic impact of this disease, as well as the wide distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis in Brazil and the likelihood that this vector may develop resistance to insecticides used for control, the Ministry of Health considers as crucial the creation of a network in order to study and monitor the resistance of this vector to insecticides used for control. In this sense, this study aimed: 1) to characterize the susceptibility of L. longipalpis from Lapinha Cave (Lagoa Santa, MG - Brazil)
