The results of the study of 154 patients with an acute trauma of the cervical portion of the vertebral column showed that fractures, dislocations and fractures/dislocations of the first-second cervical vertebrae accounted for 10.4% of all the studied cases. In mild contusion of the first-second segments the leading clinical symptoms in the acute period were pareses of the arms and paralyses of hands with retained reflexes and insignificant impairments of sensitivity in fingers, i.e., the level of clinical manifestations did not correspond with the conventional segmento-metameric innervation. I…

UNLABELLED: Adjacent segment disease (ASDI) is a well-described complication of spinal fusion surgery that may ultimately lead to spinal stenosis and repeated surgical intervention. Although congenital block vertebrae also present with degenerative changes in the adjacent segments, this has not yet been systematically investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the presence and degree of ASDI in congenital cervical block vertebrae.
METHODS: A total of 51 patients with congenital vertebral fusion in one cervical segment were analysed in this IRB-approved retrospective cross-sectional stu

INTRODUCTION: Skeletal maturity evaluation plays a critical role in orthodontic treatment planning. While cervical vertebral maturation index (CVMI) and dental calcification stages are commonly used, the potential of frontal sinus dimensions as an additional indicator has gained attention. This study evaluated the correlation of frontal sinus development with skeletal maturation of cervical vertebrae and calcification stages of permanent teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 60 subjects, with a mean age of 13 ± 3.4 (range 8-20) years. Standardized pre-treatment lateral cephalo…

Tuberculosis is a disease with presentations both in the lungs and at other extrapulmonary sites. While pulmonary tuberculosis constitutes a significant proportion of total tuberculosis cases, extrapulmonary cases with infections at rare sites are also documented. Herein, an exceedingly rare case of tuberculosis of the cervical vertebrae with retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal abscesses due to Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a young Indian male is presented. The rarity of the locations of the lesions with coinfections with two bacteria made the diagnosis challenging. Be…

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is prognostic for survival in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). However, identification of this high-risk feature remains challenging without computed tomography (CT) imaging of the abdomen or thorax. Herein, we establish sarcopenia thresholds at the C3 level and determine if C3 sarcopenia is associated with survival in patients with HNC.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in consecutive patients with a squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck with cross-sectional abdominal or neck imaging within 60 days prior to treatment. Measurement of

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as key regulators in gene expression; however, little is currently known regarding their role in cartilaginous endplate (CE) degeneration (CED) of cervical vertebra. The present study aimed to investigate the expression levels of lncRNAs and analyze their potential functions in CED of cervical vertebra in patients with cervical fracture and cervical spondylosis. Human competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) array was used to analyze lncRNA and mRNA expression levels in CE samples from patients with cervical fracture and cervical spondylosis, who received

The first cervical vertebra (C1) is atypical in shape and bears a complex relationship with important neurovascular structures such as the vertebral artery and cervical spinal cord which are at risk of injury during misplaced screw fixation of C1. Placement of screws into the lateral mass of C1 vertebra is performed for stabilization of the craniovertebral junction. The objective of this study was to describe ideal screw dimensions, precise entry points, safe bony corridors, and ideal trajectories for placement of lateral mass screws in the Emirati population. CT scans of 160 Emirati patients
