We present an epidemiological and serological study in 286 health care students. We found susceptibility for measles in 11.7% individuals (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 8.0-15%), for rubella: 6.7% (95% CI: 3.8-9.6%) for mumps: 12.7% (95% CI: 8.0-16.6%) and for varicella 8.5% (95% CI: 5.3-11.7%). Compared to a similar study, performed in 1992 in a population of health care workers, we found an increasing susceptibility to these diseases except for mumps, that had decreased. Among those who received one dose of measles vaccine we found 12.1% non immune. We found an high level of immunity (97

A study was undertaken to determine whether children immunized with live varicella vaccine are at greater risk of acquiring herpes zoster than children who have had varicella. Children with acute lymphocytic leukemia who had had varicella were compared with those who received live varicella vaccine. During the period of observation, 15 of 73 children who had varicella acquired herpes zoster and none of the 34 children who had been vaccinated. If the time of observation was adjusted for and the vaccinees who failed to have a sustained antibody response or who acquired chickenpox were removed, t…

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox is a benign, self-limiting disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) that is transmitted from person to person with direct contact or airborne spread, which usually lasts for five to seven days. There was a sudden increase in the number of cases of fever along with rashes at two sites in Jharkhand, India. We aimed to survey and establish the etiology and investigate the extent of the disease.
METHODS: We defined the case of chickenpox as a person with acute onset of diffuse maculo-papulovesicular rash. From the clinically suspected cases, blood samples were col…

INTRODUCTION: In the UK, primary varicella is usually a mild infection in children, but can cause serious illness in susceptible pregnant women and adults. The UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is considering an adolescent varicella vaccination programme. Cost-effectiveness depends upon identifying susceptibles and minimising vaccine wastage, and chickenpox history is one method to screen for eligibility. To inform this approach, we estimated the proportion of adolescents with varicella antibodies by reported chickenpox history.
METHODS: Recruitment occurred through secondary…

Our previous study found mistakes by some doctors in the choice of an assay for determining antibodies in Japan. To compare the positivity rates for antibodies by assays, we measured the antibodies of measles, rubella, chickenpox and mumps from the same sera using such methods as the EIA, HI and CF assays. The subjects were 175 nursing students. The positivity rates for measles, chickenpox and mumps by the EIA assay were 96.6%, 93.7%, and 83.3%, respectively. Those for rubella by the HI and CF assays were 92.0% and 10.1%. The sensitivity rates for measles, chickenpox and mumps by the HI and CF…

To determine the seasonal variation of childhood infectious diseases in Taiwan, the incidence rates of chickenpox, mumps and rubella were studied by analyzing patient's records collected from pediatric clinics in northern, central, southern and eastern Taiwan from January 1, 1993 to December 31, 1993. The study revealed that a chickenpox outbreak was most likely to occur in autumn, followed by a second peak in spring, and the lowest rate in summer. In this study, the highest monthly incidence of chickenpox was 540 cases per 100,000 population. The highest incidence of mumps occurred in the spr…

We present an epidemiological and serological study in 409 health care workers randomly selected from the 4,103 workers of the University Hospital of Coimbra. A low level of susceptibility for measles (1.2%; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.15-2.23%), rubella (2.4%; 95% CI: 0.9-3.9) and varicella (3.2%; 95% CI: 1.5-4.7%) and a very high one for mumps (17.3%; 95% CI: 13.7-21.1%), were found. Ineffectiveness of historical information in predicting immune status to all of these diseases was found. An economic analysis of preventive measures was done. A mumps vaccination policy for health care

A pregnant woman with post-term birth developed a varicella rash on the day, when birth was to be initiated. The date was then postponed, un … ies are not transferred rapidly to the baby, and therefore it seems reasonable, that in the case of chickenpox at the time of delivery, the birth should be delayed, not only until seroconversion in the mother's blood, but - if possible - a few days longer.

Immunity characteristics at the height of the infectious process and at the period of convalescence were studied in 170 adult patients, aged 18-45 years, with chickenpox, rubella measles and epidemic parotitis. In chickenpox, rubella and measles a significant decrease, more pronounced in a severe course of the disease, in the number of T- and B-lymphocytes was observed, the immunosuppressive effect being more pronounced in measles. During convalescence the number of T- and B-lymphocytes in patients with the above-mentioned diseases approached the normal level with the exception of measles pati…

Novel therapeutics used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease pose an increased risk of viral reactivation in patients. We present a case of a patient with refractory Crohn's disease (CD) who developed primary varicella (chickenpox) of a vaccine-viral strain after receiving combination immunosuppression with high-dose corticosteroids, tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi), and a Janus kinase inhibitor (JAKi) in the hospital. While this patient recovered and did not experience long term adverse effects, her case provides an opportunity for improvement. To improve safety, healthcare fa…

OBJECTIVE: The occurrence of chickenpox in rapidly developing areas poses substantial seasonal risk to children. However, certain factors influencing local chickenpox outbreaks have not been studied. Here, we examined the relationship between spatial clustering, heterogeneity of chickenpox outbreaks, and socioeconomic factors in Southern China.
METHODS: We assessed chickenpox outbreak data from Southern China between 2006 and 2021, comprising both relatively fast-growing parts and slower sub-regions, and provides a representative sample of many developing regions. We analyzed the spatial clus…

A 61-year-old woman with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) was found to have multiple pulmonary nodules on an annual chest radiograph 4 months after recovery from chickenpox. To exclude the metastatic carcinoma, an open lung biopsy was performed. Histological examination disclosed isolated necrotic nodules surrounded by some lymphocytes and a few giant cells. These histological findings were compatible with healed varicella pneumonia and the DNA of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. We report a case of asymptomatic pulmonary involvement of VZ…

INTRODUCTION: Displaced populations face disproportionately high risk of communicable disease outbreaks given the strains of travel, health care circumstances in their country of origin, and limited access to health care in receiving countries.
STUDY OBJECTIVE: Understanding the role of demographic characteristics in outbreaks is important for timely and efficient control measures. Accordingly, this study assesses chickenpox outbreaks in three large refugee camps on mainland Greece from 2016 - 2017, using clinical line-list data from Médecins du Monde (MdM) clinics.
METHODS: Clinical line-li…

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare complication of chickenpox. All cases of post-varicella GBS published in the literature have been associated with the classical albuminocytological dissociation. We report the case of a 48-year-old male with flaccid areflexic quadriparesis and bilateral seventh, ninth, tenth, and twelfth cranial nerve palsies 10 days after chickenpox. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis done in the second week showed marked lymphocytic pleocytosis. Electroneurographic studies were suggestive of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy. He had near-total neurolog…
